Encontrar un espacio donde mi hija pueda aprender música no ha sido sencillo, ya que ninguno de los que habíamos encontrado, hasta ahora, cuentan con atención especial para personas con condición, claro que los hay, pero son muy costosos y no los podemos pagar, pero finalmente dimos con el lugar, un sitio lleno de profesionales de alto nivel, con atención gratuita.
An inclusive opportunity at the UC Orfeón for our little daughter
Finding a place where my daughter could learn music hasn't been easy, as none of the ones we had found until now offer special attention for people with conditions. Of course, they exist, but they are very expensive and we cannot afford them. But finally, we stumbled upon the place, a site full of high-level professionals, with free attention.
Se trata del Orfeón de la Universidad de Carabobo, que opera en un espacio dentro del edificio antiguo que sirvió como primera sede de la universidad en 1850. Este edificio está al lado el teatro Municipal de Valencia y nos enteramos de su existencia por accidente. Estábamos en una graduación en el teatro y nos sorprendió ver que en el pequeño bulevar que está al lado, habían muchos jóvenes tocando instrumentos musicales.
It's the Orfeón (choir) of the University of Carabobo, which operates in a space within the old building that served as the university's first headquarters in 1850. This building is next to the Municipal Theater of Valencia, and we found out about its existence by accident. We were at a graduation at the theater and were surprised to see that in the small boulevard next to it, there were many young people playing musical instruments.
De inmediato pensé que tenía que ver con el sistema de orquestas juveniles nacional de mi país, pero nunca pensé que el Orfeón de la Universidad también estaba en este lugar. Preguntamos por cupo para mi hijo mayor para participar con su guitarra, pero no hay cupo por ahora, pero si lo hay para canto y al consultar para nuestra hija con autismo, nos dijeron que también para ella había oportunidad.
I immediately thought it had to do with my country's national youth orchestra system, but I never thought that the University's Orfeón was also in this place. We inquired about a spot for my eldest son to participate with his guitar, but there are no openings right now. However, there are openings for singing, and when we asked about our daughter with autism, they told us that there was also an opportunity for her.
De inmediato un profesor probó a mi hijo mayor, se sentó al piano y a medida que tocaba las nota y le daba instrucciones le dijo que lo aceptaba, que por ahora es barítono y que con trabajo puede mejorar. La sorpresa llegó cuando probó a nuestra hija, le preguntó si sabía el Himno Nacional, ella le dijo que no recordaba todo, así que con lo poco que sabía comenzó a tocar notas en el piano, y subir el tono poco a poco.
Immediately, a professor tested my eldest son. He sat at the piano, and as he played the notes and gave him instructions, he told him that he accepted him, that for now he is a baritone and that with work he can improve. The surprise came when he tested our daughter. He asked her if she knew the National Anthem. She said she didn't remember all of it, so with the little she knew, he began to play notes on the piano, gradually raising the pitch.
Para nuestra sorpresa llego a notas bastante altas, y al ver la cara del profesor de asombro, quedamos anonadados. El profesor nos dijo que con trabajo y disciplina ella puede llegar a ser, a medida que se desarrolle, una cantante de ópera. Quién lo iba a pensar, siempre que la escucho cantar las canciones que más le gustan, es como todo niño, se escucha normal, incluso ella se equivoca con muchas palabras por su condición, pero no lo hace de forma sobresaliente, menos afinado.
To our surprise, she reached quite high notes, and seeing the professor's astonished face, we were stunned. The professor told us that with work and discipline, as she develops, she can become an opera singer. Who would have thought? Whenever I hear her sing the songs she likes the most, like any child, she sounds normal, she even mispronounces many words due to her condition, but it's not noticeably off-key.
La diferencia la hizo un profesional, con una pequeña prueba para conocer el límite de su capacidad demostró que puede lograr mucho más. Se nos mandó volver, debía hacer otra prueba, esta vez con la profesora del grupo que le corresponde, ella accedió a tenerla, pero nos contactará en una semanas para saber cuando podrá empezar, primero debe depurar la lista de participantes, porque hay niños que no han asistido, les retirará el cupo y nos llamará.
The difference was made by a professional. With a small test to know the limit of her ability, he demonstrated that she can achieve much more. We were told to come back; she had to take another test, this time with the professor of the group she corresponds to. She agreed to have her, but she will contact us in a few weeks to know when she can start. First, she must clear the list of participants because there are children who have not attended, she will withdraw their spots and call us.
No damos por sentado nada, pero estamos muy felices y sorprendidos, nos ha costado mucho encontrar una actividad extracurricular que le guste a mi hija y que sea inclusivo. Las palabras de mi pequeña nunca las olvidare al salir de la prueba, me dijo: ¡papá, mi corazón siente muy feliz! Fue la manera que encontró para expresar su emoción, así que obviamente haremos todo lo posible para que pueda continuar.
We don't take anything for granted, but we are very happy and surprised. It has been very difficult for us to find an extracurricular activity that my daughter likes and that is inclusive. I will never forget my little girl's words when leaving the test. She said to me, "Dad, my heart feels very happy!" That was the way she found to express her emotion, so obviously, we will do everything possible so that she can continue.
