A few days ago my daughter's school celebrated a science fair. And even though they're only three years old in her classroom, it doesn't mean the won't participate with age appropriate experiments. Even last year, when they were in nursery, the made their projects and it is really wonderful to see how excited they get by exploring and discovering new things with the help out their parents and caregivers.
In my daughter's classroom we were all very involved in every aspect, from the decorations, to the snacks to share in this occasion.
Hace unos días se celebró la feria científica en la escuela de mi hija. Y si bien en su aula son niños de tan solo tres años, esto no significa que ellos no vayan a participar con experimentos acordes a su edad. Incluso, el año pasado cuando estaban aún en maternal , hicieron experimentos a su manera y es increíble ver cómo se emocionan descubriendo y explorando cosas nuevas con ayuda de sus padres y cuidadores.
En el aula de mi hija estuvimos muy involucrados en cada aspecto, desde la decoración, hasta los bocadillos para tener un pequeño compartir con motivo de esta ocasión.
With my daughter we chose to experiment dying withe flowers with food coloring, so we went to get a bunch of chrysanthemum so we could practice at home and still have enough for the day of the presentation of her little project. It was beautiful to see how happy she got by putting the drops of colors in each cup by herself, and then placing the flowers in them. We put them to a side and a few hour later they had changed colors, which filled her with awe and I explained to her thaw this is because the flowers "drink" water through their stems.
Con mi hija escogí el experimento de teñir flores blancas con colorante para alimentos, así que fui por un buen ramo de crisantemos para poder practicar en casa y tener suficientes para el día de la presentación de su pequeño proyecto. Fue realmente hermoso ver su alegría al colocar ella misma las gotas de colores en cada pequeño vaso y luego introducir los puñados de flores. Los colocamos a un lado y horas más tarde habían cambiado de color, cosa que la llenó de asombro y le expliqué que esto se debe a que las flores "toman agua" a través de sus tallos.
We saved those flowers for the presentation day, because it is an experiment that takes time and we wouldn't have the chance to show the results in real time. So when the day came, I dressed her in a tiny lab coat and we went to school, when we arrived I was glad we chose to dye flowers because most of the kids were doing the magic foam experiment with baking soda and I didn't want to repeat the same as the others.
Guardamos esas flores para el día de la presentación, ya que es un experimento que toma tiempo y no tendríamos chance de mostrar el resultado final en tiempo real. Así que al llegar el día, la vestí con una pequeña bata de laboratorio y nos dirigimos a la escuela, al llegar me alegre de escoger teñir flores pues la mayoría haría experimentos de espuma mágica con bicarbonato de sodio y lo que no quería era repetir el mismo de otro niño.
I was very moved to see every participation and how happy the kids were to do things on their own, with only a little help of course, but to be able to be independent and to explain themselves each step they looked so genuinely proud and excited.
When it was our turn I couldn't help but she'd some tears of happiness to see her so confident explaining each step of the process: "We cut the flower, we put colors, we put the flowers and the flowers drink water and they change". And even more when she showed me the medal of participation she got.
Me llenó de ternura ver cada una de las participaciones y lo felices que estaban los niños de hacer las cosas por si solos, con un poco de ayuda por supuesto, pero al ejercer independencia y explicar ellos mismos el paso a paso se les veía llenos de orgullo y emoción.
Al llegar el turno de mi pequeña no pude evitar llorar de la felicidad al verla tan segura de si misma explicando los pasos que había que hacer: "Cortamos la flor, ponemos colores, ponemos las flores y las flores toman agua y se convierten". Y aún más cuando me mostró llena de orgullo la medalla de participación que le otorgaron.
Going back home she was so happy she didn't want to take off the lab coat and smiled everytime a passerby complimented her.
I love this kind of initiatives that impulse creativity and curiosity in our little ones, and the fact they don't get excluded but get to participate in those fairs as a way to show them that we trust they're capable of achieving wonderful things.
De regreso a casa estaba tan feliz que no quiso quitarse la bata de laboratorio y sonreía contenta ante los comentarios de las personas sobre lo linda que se veía.
Me encantan este tipo de iniciativas que fomentan la creatividad y curiosidad de los pequeños, y que no se les excluya de este tipo de ferias sino que les mostremos que confiamos en que son capaces de lograr cosas maravillosas.
