Welcome dear readers and lovers of handicrafts
My daughters are the engine that gives meaning to my existence, I love them deeply and in this time of social distancing I am very concerned about their emotional stability. Thank God they seem to cope with the confinement in a very good way. But I am aware that it is essential for their development to have contact with other children and currently they do not. My husband and I try to make their day to day life as bearable as possible within our means. Of course we do our best to make the special dates even more special and unforgettable.
My two little girls have already had to celebrate their birthday for two consecutive years in quarantine, just like many other children. Last year I had the opportunity to make all the preparations and decorations for my two princesses. This year, a life setback prevented me from celebrating my little Nadiah's birthday, unfortunately I was away from home because of Covid-19. I am immensely grateful that God gave me the opportunity to recover and return to my family. But, I must confess that being away from my little girl for the first time and much worse on her birthday broke my heart. Thank God, my beloved husband,
as always exceeded my expectations, not only took care of them and attended them wonderfully during all that time. He also managed to make their birthday a special day, through video and pictures I could see their happy faces celebrating and if my family is happy, I am immensely happy.
I know there will be many birthdays to come and I thank God for giving me the opportunity to recover and be back with my family to enjoy them. The first opportunity to get even came with Aniuska's birthday, my eldest princess. My first born turned 12 in June. She is almost a teenager and while her little sister had asked for Hello Kitty decorations, she wanted a Japanese style birthday. Her daddy would be in charge of the menu, and throughout the day we enjoyed dishes from the Japanese culture. Although, of course, the inevitable homemade pizza could not be left out, it is one of the favorite dishes of the whole family. The Japanese style menu, although laborious, turned out to be relatively simple to prepare, and the best thing is that with ingredients that we normally have at home, we enjoyed preparing them as a family. In the West, when we talk about Japanese food we usually think of Sushi, but, although I particularly love it, it is complicated and expensive to prepare. With this experience, we were able to discover that there are many Japanese dishes, less popular than Sushi, however, they are very tasty and accessible.
On the other hand, the decoration was my job, but, yes, I could not include the famous Japanese kitty, who adores her little sister, hahahaha, I proposed her to do the decoration with KOKESHIS and she loved the idea. I love those little traditional dolls of the Japanese culture, I have some at home, so, on that side the table decoration was solved. But I was missing something to complement the decoration and what I elaborated to complement it, is what I have the pleasure to share with you today. I searched the internet for patterns to make a large figure of a Kokeshis in cardboard, to put it in the background. I didn't find any pattern that I liked, but I did find a small drawing, and I adapted it to the size I needed. Next I will show you the materials used.
The first thing I did was to enlarge the small drawing, for which I used the PowerPoint application, I divided it into 4 equal parts. Then I enlarged them to bring each quarter of the drawing to letter size, then I printed, then I assembled the 4 parts and I got the doll of the size I wanted.
On a piece of recycled cardboard I traced the silhouette and cut it, with the purpose of using it as a background, where to glue the different pieces. At the same time it would serve to give some structure and strength to the final image of the Kokeshis.
Then it was time to make the patterns of the different pieces that would give shape to the doll, using sheets of recycled letter paper.
Once we had the different pieces, together with my daughter we decided on the colors we would use to cut the different pieces. To cut the different pieces we used cardboard, in the case of the suit we cut it in a cardboard printed with little flowers. For the rest of the pieces we used unicolor cardboard, in the different shades required.
The next step was simple, and a lot of fun, because it is like putting together a puzzle, which I love, by the way. Little by little, with the help of the girls, we put together each one of the pieces until we got our cute little Japanese doll.
For the final touches, I used colored pencils to outline the pieces that needed it. Modesty aside, I loved the result, I think it was beautiful, I hope you like it too. To assemble the decoration once the day of the celebration arrived, I simply tried to place all the elements I had for the decoration. Besides the dolls, I placed a set of cups and teapot in Japanese style and a small cherry tree that I built some time ago, and other details. Maybe it was not in the purest Japanese style, but I was making do with what I had at my disposal and my daughter loved it and was super happy.
Well for now I say goodbye and I hope you are very well, I can only remind you to take care of yourselves and your loved ones by implementing biosecurity measures.
