Dear Nug,
As always, you have grown so much since the last time I wrote you. It’s only been a few months, but at this age that makes a big difference.
Your language and understanding of the world is so much more advanced these days. You use big sentences now. I counted one once and it was nine words long and had at least three concepts in it, something like, “I’m sitting down holding my duck on the toilet.”
Speaking of counting, you’re starting to do that quite well too. You can count to ten, and ever go a little bit past ten when you’re feeling ambitious. Counting objects and stopping when you’re done is something we’re working on.
Memory and linking ideas comes naturally to you too. This past weekend you watched a Peppa Pig episode about shadows (Peppa is a big deal for you right now). Then two days later you saw a shadow in a book and identified it excitedly. Then we explored your real shadow, and Mom showed you how to make shadow puppets!
This weekend we also had our first gymnastics class. It was a full hour of jumping and tumbling and somersaulting. You were the only one in your group that could do a full somersault, even though you were one of the smallest!
You are courteous and observant: nothing gets by you. You want to feed Mom and Dad, you are good with tidying up most of the time (but for some reason, have decided that putting clothes in the laundry just isn’t for you any more). You are good friends with many of your stuffed toys, your favourite of which is Maya the Purple Octopus.
You are big and smart enough now that your school is moving you up to the next level… which will come with some big adjustments. It might be tough at first but your Mom and I are confident that you’ll enjoy it a lot once you settle in.
And in other news, you completed your first ever vacation with your very own plane seat! We visited with cousins in a very warm place, which was a welcome break from the snow and cold at home. All told, it was a great time and you loved all the sun, water, and beach adventures.
It just became springtime here, and we all look forward to more time outside and longer days. You stay up a little bit later these days too. Life is bright, not-so-little girl, and just keeps getting more fun.
I’ll let you know what kind of fun we all get up to in my next letter.
Until then, much love,
Dad
This series of blogs is to catalog the memories, milestones, and reflections of parenthood. Perhaps one day you (the Nug) will be curious to read them! In the meantime, they’re a nice way for Dad to process this whole parenting thing. He’s a writer, so putting words out into the world is relaxing, therapeutic, and fun.
