Teaching kid is not an easy job. I am not a certified teacher but I have an experienced of teaching kids. I always give my respect and admiration to all teachers because it is one of the hardest job to do.
It is difficult to get kids' attention and to let them be attentive and maintained their cooperation in the class.
So what would be your technique if you are teaching your own kid, or your siblings or your godchildren? Well, let me share with you my tips on how I captured my godson's attention and maintained his full cooperation in the class.
Hey Hivers!
This morning I had a tutorial with my 6-year old godson. It was all about numbers. Actually he have already learned addition and subtraction and I have noticed that he was not good of multiplication yet. So the tutorial focused on multiplication.
Tip No. 1: I Used Colorful Buttons To Catch His Attention
Kids love colorful stuff. It helps boost their excitement.
As he saw these colorful buttons he was excited to learn. Although everything was not ready yet and I haven't done giving him instruction yet but he started to get some buttons and started counting.
Tip No. 2: Be Creative
Kids always love activities. Don't talk much because your words will never be appreciated instead create an engaging activities.
I placed one multiplication card in front of him. I instructed him what to do so he will be able to get the answer.
After creating 8 groups of buttons with 5 buttons each group, I instructed him to count.
Look how happy he was after he perfectly answered it. He was attentive and cooperative because he likes and enjoys the activity that I created. He did not refuse to answer.
Tip No. 3: Do Not Hold Them Too Long
They are easily get distracted. They are easily get bored. Do not consume too much time of teaching them, it won't be effective. After teaching them, let them explore in different thing, let their creativity be activated.
After few activities he did and he got the correct answers, I let him do what he wanted to do.
He created a star. It was funny because he drew it first to his notebook and followed it. I guided him so he would be able to create a star.
Look at the star he created. It was cute, isn't it? I was happy of his little achievement hmmmm we are both happy (lol).
After the tutorial, I taught him to clean up his mess. This is crucial. Train and guide them on how to clean up their own mess. Give them little responsibility.
Tip No. 4: Create A Reward System
Positive reinforcement plays a big role in teaching children, it is actually a crucial one. In this way you would be able to help them to keep their motivation high. It's up to you what form of reward/s you would like to provide.
I usually gave him food or sometimes php5.00 but his performane today is far different to his usual performance so I gave him php20.00
Look at his reaction. It was so genuine.
After our tutorial, he grabbed his bag and cap and put his mask on his face and was ready to leave. He just live near to my brother's house.
Honestly, teaching kid is very tiring but fulfilling. When I saw his progress everyday, it made me happy and fulfilled.
