Every parent want their children to be healthy including me. We try our best to offer healthy foods to our toddlers but sometimes, we forget to consider what they eat and how it might cause harm to their bodies.
Being a parent comes with lots of tasks, most times we give our children sugary treats as a reward for achieving a particular task or as a bribe so they can give you some space to concentrate on your work. Truth be told, I found myself guilty of this act, but what matters most is not offering them sugary food always as an incentive or reward but instead encourage healthy eating by swapping the sugar treats with healthy fruits and veggies.
However, it is advisable to "occasionally" treat your kids to sugary foods like chocolate, cakes, ice cream, all kinds of biscuits etc., though it shouldn't be a regular norm; this is because most of these processed food contains high level of sugar and salt which is unhealthy. Consuming sugary foods at an early age might not have any effect immediately but will be extended. The health implications of high sugar consumption includes big not limited to the following:
- tooth decay and tooth loss at a young age.
- obesity at a young age
- risk of diabetes. etc.
As a parent, we can only encourage
our children to eat healthy food and limit sugary foods if we are practicing the same thing.
Promoting healthy eating looks like a difficult task for some parents but it's relatively easy if we start early. Buy healthy snacks like fruits, vegetables and fewer sugar biscuit like crackers, make a vegetable-packed meal, ensure your children food looks presentable and creative and see they becoming more interested in having their meals.
Most schools these days are already on board in promoting healthy snacks. They now make some days in a week fruit days and it's very compulsory. I remember giving my child biscuit and a drink for snack on a fruit day in school and to my greatest chagrin, his teacher seized it. That's how serious they are and I don't have any problem with that.
The key to healthy eating is moderation and being aware of processed sugars that can cause harm to our bodies.
