Last Wednesday, I took Alys to her annual eye exam. I booked the appointment two weeks in advance, and it was scheduled for 12:30 p.m. It seemed perfect, but I almost fainted when I saw the cost of the visit—it had gone up by $20 since the last time we came, now costing $70. Without a doubt, inflation in our country is becoming increasingly noticeable.
Alys’s ophthalmologist specializes in strabismus, as Alys has a misalignment of her eyes, which is more pronounced in her left eye. Currently, the city doesn’t have many specialists of this kind, especially when it comes to children, so she has been treating Alys’s case for several years now.
To be able to take Alys to the doctor, I had to swap my work shift with a colleague because it conflicted with my regular schedule. We arrived at the clinic early, but by the time we got to the doctor’s office, it was already 12:30 p.m. My other daughter, Abby, and my mom came with us.
They let us in right away; the doctor was already waiting for us and began the annual checkup. She placed Alys in a machine that estimates her prescription and then moved her to the eye exam chair to adjust her prescription while Alys looked at numbers and letters on a screen to identify which prescription allowed her to see correctly. She also examined Alys’s eyes to check that their internal structure was healthy and measured the deviation of her eyes, which remains at the same degree.
The prescription for her astigmatism remains the same, but her myopia has increased slightly due to screen use, even though we’ve limited screen time at home. Additionally, we spent a couple of months using her old glasses because Alys broke the updated pair. I was advised to have her watch more TV than use mobile devices, as TV has less of an impact on myopia.
The appointment ended, and Alys said goodbye to the doctor until our next visit, which will be in a year.

El pasado miércoles llevé a Alys a su consulta anual con la oftalmóloga, primero reserve la cita con dos semanas de anticipación y se pauto para las 12:30pm, me pareció perfecto pero casi me desmayo al momento de recibir el costo de la consulta, había aumentado 20$ desde la última vez que vinimos teniendo un costo de 70$, sin duda la inflación en nuestro país cada vez se notar más.
La oftalmóloga de Alys es especialista en estrabismo, ya que tiene desviación de sus ojos siendo más predominante en su ojo izquierdo, actualmente la ciudad no cuenta con tantos especialistas de este tipo y menos cuando se trata de niños, así que ella lleva su caso desde hace varios años ya.
Para poder llevar a Alys con la doctora tuve que cambiar mi día de trabajo con otra compañera porque coincidía con mi trabajo habitual , llegamos a la clínica antes de la hora pero mientras llegábamos al consultorio se nos hicieron las 12:30pm, nos acompañaron mi otra hija Abby y mi mamá.
Inmediatamente nos hicieron pasar ya la doctora nos estaba esperando e inició con la rutina anual, colocó a Alys en una maquina que aproxima su fórmula y luego paso a la silla oftalmológica para ajustar su fórmula mientras ella veía en una pantalla números y letras para identificar con cuál fórmula veía correctamente, también reviso sus ojos para observar si su estructura interna se encontraba bien y midió la desviación de sus ojos y sigue siendo la mismos grados.
La fórmula para corregir su astigmatismo se encuentra igual, pero su miopía aumento un poquito por el uso de las pantallas apesar de que regulamos el uso de las mismas en casa a parte tuvimos un para de meses utilizando los lentes anteriores ya que Alys rompió los que tenía actualizados, se me recomendó hacer más uso del televisor que de los dispositivos móviles ya que afectan menos en el caso de la miopía.
La consulta terminó y Alys se despidió de la doctora hasta nuestra próxima visita que será dentro de un año.
