For the last 6 weeks or so, and I have been wanting to share a #FungiFriday post
but one way or another we never got around to actually doing it, even though we have gone foraging for mushrooms plenty of times, both in Italy and Portugal, since the two of us got together, at the start of September.
Clare and I even had an interesting nightly encounter with a wild pig in the Italian mountains, while sleeping in Clare's car on a rain infested night. We also ran into a wild cow that Clare got a bit too close too ( I've got pictures to prove that )
but hey, that's all food for another post by Clare or me, in the foreseeable future.
Today I just wanted to share a couple of photos of this evening's walk, where we ended up without mushrooms to bring home with us. Luckily we didn't have to go to bed hungry, as we found plenty of fresh chestnuts that are roasting in the oven right now, abundantly sprinkled with sunflower/olive oil and sea salt.
Here's a bunch of photos of mushrooms that we did not take home with us for various reasons.
They were either
too slimy...
or
too spongy...
Infested with maggots...
or likely inedible (albeit similar to the parasol mushroom)...
Some were simply too tiny...
or too cute...
too fashionable to pick...
or already chewed on by wild animals...
And this one screamed SO LOUDLY that we had to drop it immediately after this picture was taken...
All in all, it was a nice walk, on a chilly, humid Autumn day in Central Portugal.
We even found our future house!
Although, something seems to be off...
This is better
I was kidding about this house but Clare and I are on the lookout for a future plot of land, in nature, possibly with a cute little house on it ( if we don't build something ourselves).
Our actual rental house can be found by following the snake trail that can be seen on these pics for a minute or ten.
Enjoying the view
The chestnuts are ready and we are starting to get hangry. Clare made an amazing soup that is bubbling in the background, as well as some nice beetroot-and-carrot cole slaw and some yummilicious oatcakes that we ate with butter, cheese and pickles/chutney (homemade by Clare), so we can indeed go to bed feeling blessed and bloated
Chestnuts!
