Mushroom is fungi, but not all fungi are mushrooms. Mushroom is fruiting bodies of fungi; fungi are one of the exciting things I wanted to learn about; taking photos and getting curious about these mysterious bodies; one afternoon, nothing was there, but the following day they were all born; how was that? That's magic..

Last night was so cold, as the heavy rain drops in our place. Thunderstorm heavy as the hammer of Thor reminds me to write about mushrooms. The following day I went outside and tried to look for mushroom bodies in our surroundings, just in our backyards. I found fungi, but when I started to love fungi? It began with one video until I found myself loving reading about them; I also finished my college thesis was all about oyster mushrooms and how to grow and improve more..
I worked on a mushroom farm/laboratory..
I took this photo myself when I was still working on a mushroom farm in 2020. I am alone inside the room, for not everyone is allowed to enter the same room, for mushroom is one of the most crucial, and one mistake could kill all the preserved specimens inside. You cant enter or exit when you want to; going inside is a challenge; you must clean yourself several times, rub ethyl alcohol and maintain hygiene. You can't bring everything inside, don't worry. I also sanitized my phone entering the workplace.
I considered this job one of my life's blessings, for I met a real mycologist. He mentored me about mushrooms and how to get specimens and work those things inside the laboratory. He educated me, for I also dreamed of becoming a scientist when I was young, at least in the new laboratory.
Even though years had passed, those lessons he gave were still in my head..
The world of fungi in my backyard.
The world of fungi in my backyard.
The soil is wet and cold; I went outside to look for specimens; although the backyard is not that suitable for collecting samples, it would be much better if we went to some forest or trees in dead places.
The first shot was Thricoderma (Green mold); who doesn't hate this? Especially when we are culturing out own spawn of our cultured mushroom, this is the mortal enemy of mushroom farmers. They grew in places mostly with low pH.
White molds, the white color mold is beneficial, especially to us farmers fermenting organically based pesticides and fertilizers; they are helpful in plants and even animals.
Splitgills mushroom. This is edible yet hard to chew; the taste is earthy. I also tried to forage this one. They grew most of the dead moistured tress.
Ink Mushroom. There are wide varieties of ink mushrooms; this is a cap with no ring. When they are old enough, they dissolve and release a liquid black, their spores, so another species soon comes as a surprise.
Wild oyster mushroom. Also edible when it's an immature stage, but when it reaches a matured side, the taste and texture bit hard to swallow.
Wild Ganoderma. This is used in Chinese medicine, I also tried a Ganoderma tea, but the cultural one is not the wild. Well, I have a mycologist mentor who gave me an idea about looking for the most edible and which are not.
Wood ear mushroom. Its also edible as food also medicine. They grew all year round in wet and dead brunch of tress in our places.
Still summer here in the Philippines, and most mushrooms are hiding somewhere. Waiting for the right time, but also reminds that not all mushrooms are safe; some are poisonous, so take care in looking for some.
