Hi fellow Hivers,
Today I wanted to give a try at a different personal health challenge: Sober October!
Attempting Sober October
Sober October! Can I do it?? That's the million dollar question :D
Now I want to be clear, I'm not an alcoholic (although I guess that is one stage of alcoholism, denial LOL) in all seriousness I don't have an alcohol problem but I do enjoy a drink at the end of a day particularly if the day was a stressful one! I do admit though that I need to do some changes in my life and daily habits to make some improvements. I ain't no spring chicken no mo!
I'm an avid listener of podcasts and one of the ones that I listen to, as do many millions of other people in the world, is Joe Rogan and the various guests he's got on. I find it incredibly interesting all of the conversations and people he has one. One of the things that I got from his show was the notion of Sober October. He does this every year for various reasons, one of them being to clean out our system from all of the shit that goes on when you drink alcohol and give our liver a break. Indulging in alcohol can certainly be enjoyable however it's something that our liver has a bit of a tough time to process it all!
Thankfully I don't drink that frequently, perhaps normally 2-3 nights a week give or take one or two days depending on how difficult of a week it's been at work. What I don't like is that the beginning of October so far has been a fucking shit show of issues at work hahaha so the stress levels are a bit elevated, I'm not going to lie! This makes the choice of Sober October a little bit more difficult but I am trying my damndest to stick to it! I need to be able to prove to myself that I have the mental fortitude to do something like this. When we choose to do something like this, it makes it much more manageable if we encounter a situation in which we can't do something. I certainly hope to always have the freedom to drink alcohol if I want to but if things get to a spot where I can't do it for one reason or another, I need to know that I can handle it!
Lately one of the things I've been enjoying is drinking some bourbon or whiskey instead of beer. I do really enjoy beer but I don't enjoy the calories or the bloated feeling that I get from drinking it which is tough, because it's delicious! In comes bourbon, my new drink of choice. It's got enough kick to get you feeling relaxed but doesn't make you feel like shit as long as you don't overdo it. With Sober October here, I am aiming to go the entire month without drinking a drop! I also want to make sure that I don't smoke cannabis, which is much more of a rarity than drinking alcohol of course but certainly something to also keep in mind for this whole thing.
I didn't do as well with Sweet-free September as I was hoping I would, I cheated on it a few times for sure lol but I think I did okay overall! I reduced my sugar intake and this has extended over to the month of October so far, where I've had a net reduction in my sugar consumption which is great. It also helps cleaning up my overall health and getting down a couple of extra pounds that I know I don't need. Add no alcohol or cannabis onto that mixture and I might have a decent bit of time to let my body clean things out and recoup! I certainly need to add in some light bodyweight exercises to my habits and I know that I'll be able to get onto the wagon again.
Let's hope I do better with Sober October than I did with the idea I had for September!
