Neurotransmitters such as dopamine, noradrenaline, acetylcholine, and serotonin are present in our brains. These substances are closely related to happiness and well-being.
Among these neurotransmitters, serotonin, known as the "happy hormone," is related to feelings of happiness and security and helps stabilize the mind. When serotonin is deficient, the mind becomes unstable and symptoms such as irritability, low motivation, and insomnia are observed.
The monoamine hypothesis also suggests that depression may be caused by a deficiency of serotonin or noradrenaline. Many of the antidepressants currently in use have been developed based on this hypothesis and seem to be having some effect.
Furthermore, serotonin is the raw material for melatonin, known as the "sleep hormone," and a lack of serotonin can cause sleep disturbances. It seems that serotonin secretion is essential to improve the quality of sleep.
How can we increase the secretion of such serotonin? For this purpose, exposure to sunlight, rhythmic exercises such as walking, jogging, and chewing, and breathing exercises such as mindfulness are effective.
I have become more aware of serotonin and other neurotransmitters and hormones in my life, and I feel more mentally stable. I intend to continue to live my life with serotonin in mind.
