A few days ago a Netflix title caught my attention, basically it is a series that focuses on the 40s, when Korea was occupied by Japan, there we illustrate how a group of scientists and doctors play experiments with humans, the series has several interesting aspects that keep you focused on the plot.

First, I must point out that I like the opening of this series, since it is animated like manga and shows in a brief way and with a sober and macabre music, how was the first encounter with this creature, its creation and how it came into the hands of the Japanese.

Likewise, almost the entire plot takes place in Gyeongseong, the current Seoul, hence the name of the series, we can see how after the occupation the Koreans are mistreated in their own land and marginalized, curiously disappearances of people occur and the revolutionary movement of Korea only knows that all those who enter the hospital in the city never come out again.

In the midst of all this two people, the protagonists are forced to work together, one is the owner of the most famous pawnshop in Gyeongseong, who is forced to find the mistress of the police chief and in his search he hires two bloodhounds, who have arrived from Manchuria, Jang Tae-sang falls in love with Yoon Chae-ok and discovers that being the richest man in Gyeongseong, he is despised by the Japanese, just like the rest of his compatriots, so dealing with this young woman and living closely the treatment for being Korean changes in a profound way.

Now, this series has 10 chapters of one hour each, its effects are very good and the performances are impeccable, there are characters that really fill you with hatred for all the evil, cynicism and more for what they are capable of doing, as well as others can be very funny, as the Koreans usually present us in their series, Here the most interesting thing is the mix of genres in the series we can see horror, action, romance and political drama, all in one place and one does not clash with the other, so throughout these ten chapters, we are sharing a little of the history of each character and at the beginning of each one makes a kind of introduction that we could say are the perceptions of some of the characters.

On the other hand, as for the creature, it is interesting that it seems to be guided by what seems to be basic instincts, until it is put to the test, to see how much of its humanity it has left, in addition to proving to be intelligent and have methods of defense that sometimes surpass its captors and creators. The typical costumes are also catching and show some of the beauty of a bygone era of Korean traditions, where there was also a mix between tradition, the homegrown and the western.

Now, what I did not like is that being so long chapters, although interesting, sometimes become heavy and you have to stop to continue, but overall an excellent series that recreates very well what happens during the occupations or dictatorships, where there are always places where the revolutionaries or locals are sent to be tortured, disappeared or used for experiments, wet, dirty, hidden, full of blood, despair and death.

In short, the monster of old Seoul, is a good option to entertain if all these genres are to the liking of those who dare to see it, or want to see how they managed to mix them, logically this series is made thinking about the tastes and characteristics of the region where it was created, plus its second season is ready and many of the doubts that we were left at the end of the first could be dispelled.

Hace unos días un título de Netflix llamo mi atención, básicamente es una serie que se centra en los años 40, cuando Corea era ocupada por Japón, allí nos ilustran como un grupo de científicos y médicos juegan a realizar experimentos con seres humanos, la serie tiene varios aspectos interesantes que te mantienen centrado en la trama.

Primero debo destacar que de esta serie me gusta su opening, ya que es animado tipo manga y muestran de manera breve y con una música entre sobria y macabra, cómo fue el primer encuentro con esta criatura, su creación y cómo llegó a manos de los japoneses.

Igualmente, casi toda la trama se desarrolla en Gyeongseong, la actual Seúl, de allí el nombre de la serie, podemos ver cómo tras la ocupación los coreanos son maltratados en su propia tierra y marginados, curiosamente ocurren desapariciones de personas y el movimiento revolucionario de Corea solo sabe que todos lo que entran en el hospital de la ciudad no salen nunca más.

En medio de todo esto dos personas, los protagonistas se ven obligados a trabajar juntos, uno es el dueño de la casa de empeño más famosa de Gyeongseong, quien es obligado a encontrar a la amante del jefe de policía y en su búsqueda contrata a dos sabuesos, que han llegado de Manchuria, así Jang Tae-sang se enamora de Yoon Chae-ok y descubre que un siendo el hombre más rico de Gyeongseong, es despreciado por los japoneses, igual que el resto de sus compatriotas, así el trato con esta joven y al vivir de cerca el trato por ser Coreano cambia de manera profunda.

Ahora bien, esta serie cuenta con 10 capítulos de una hora cada uno, sus efectos son muy buenos y las actuaciones impecables, hay personajes que realmente te llenan de odio por toda la maldad, cinismo y más por lo que son capaces de hacer, así como otros pueden ser muy graciosos, como suelen presentarnos los coreanos en sus series, aquí lo más interesante es la mezcla de géneros en la serie podemos ver terror, acción, romance y drama político, todo en solo lugar y una no choca con la otra, así a lo largo de estos diez capítulos, nos van compartiendo un poco de la historia de cada personaje y al comienzo de cada uno hace como una especie de introducción que podríamos decir son las percepciones de alguno los personajes.

Por otra parte, en cuanto a la criatura, es interesante que parece estar guiada por lo que parecen los instintos básicos, hasta que es puesta a prueba, para ver cuánto de su humanidad le queda, además de demostrar ser inteligente y tener unos métodos de defensa que a veces superan a sus captores y creadores. El vestuario típico también atrapa y muestra parte de la belleza de una época ya pasada de las tradiciones coreanas, en la que también hubo una mezcla entre la tradición, lo propio y lo occidental.

Ahora, lo que no me gusto es que al ser tan largos los capítulos, aunque interesantes, a veces se hacen pesados y hay que parar para continuar, pero en líneas generales una excelente serie que recrea muy bien lo que ocurre durante las ocupaciones o dictaduras, donde siempre hay lugares a los que son enviados los revolucionarios o locales, para ser torturados, desaparecidos o usados para experimentos, sitios húmedos, sucios, escondidos, llenos de sangre, desesperación y muerte.

En resumen, el monstruo de la vieja Seúl, es una buena opción para entretenerse si todos esos géneros son del agrado de los que se animen a verla, o desean ver como lograron mezclarlos, lógicamente esta serie esta realizada pensando en los gustos y características propias de la región donde fue creada, además su segunda temporada ya está lista y muchas de las dudas que nos quedaron al final de la primera podrían ser disipadas.
