Greetings!
We all know or those that are old enough to understand that Global Warming is an existential threat to us humans. Governments all over the world are already taking steps to combat global warming with little to no effect. Every year as I watch documentaries about global warming the polar ice caps are the most talked about subject because it is currently melting at a steady pace therefore making the level of sea rise every year.
There are a lot of movies already made about global warming and "Waterworld" is one of them.
Waterworld is a post-apocalyptic movie set in the future where the polar ice caps have melted and covered the whole world with water. It is a rugged film in terms of the costumes used in order to portray the lack of capability of surviving humans in creating their clothes and it is also a backward movie in terms of knowledge of the younger generations of humans that survived in an attempt to show what might happen to future generations of human without the technology that we are currently enjoying.
What struck me right away is that most of the characters seems unhygienic even though they are living in a world of water and I can't believe it, imagine you are living in a world of water but you seem to have not taken a bath for months or is it not okay to bath on salty water then not bathing on freshwater after? And it seems that their costume seems monotonous, almost everything has a shade of brown, gray, and dirty white.
I am also surprised that the film included the element of mutation on Kevin Costner. I do not buy into the idea of mutation since mutation couldn't happen in just hundreds of years I think it can only happen in millions of years as revealed in the movie that it has filled the entire world for hundreds of years.
I am also surprised that for hundreds of years, some of the world's technologies are still working like the jetski and some guns. I am convinced that guns are bullets that can be easily recycled but in the Jeskit I am not sold to the idea that they are still working for hundreds of years. Nevertheless, it makes the movie interesting as they made the Jetski look very very old and all rusty.
The most interesting of the guns featured in the movie is the machine gun in a boat. A smoker can be seen collecting the shells coming off from the machine. While it is scientifically true that shells can be recycled I do not know exactly how many times you can reuse the shells.
Another surprise (for me) from the movie is the presence of a floatplane. Could a floatplane possibly survive for hundreds of years without breaking down? The spare parts would be so scarce that I think any plane cannot survive for even a hundred years without changing its spare parts.
The first battle scene of the movie is so chaotic that you can see a lot of people being thrown up in the water but I guess it is understandable since it is the moment of live or die and the people on the atoll seem to be uneducated with the exception of the elders. So, the people do not know exactly what to do in the event of an attack.
Kevin Costner's character in the movie did have a mutation and his feet started to look like fish and the behind of his ears now has gills. With that being said, the movie did a good job of making him swim like a fish and faster than a human.
Waterworld is also very educational since it shows what can happen if you don't drink water for a long and that drinking salt water is not advisable.
There is one that also caught my eye, the explosion of the oil tanker. The explosion and so huge that it made me think how much fuel was used to blow up the tanker. I assume that nobody could have been able to survive such a huge explosion inside the tanker and the only persons who could have survived were those that were from the outside.
Some parts of the script are a bit predictable like when Kevin Costner went alone to save the young girl. But there are also those that are not predictable like the bungee jumping of Kevin Costner and the eventual saving of them by the hot air balloon.
By the way, I also don't expect that the movie is going to show the structures submerged by the water that came from the melted Polar Ice Caps.
The movie also made me think about the population during the time. But if I am going to assume the human population has greatly decreased since then probably because of shortness of food and drinking water.
Another one that I was not able to predict is about the map at the back of the girl as it was supposed to be read backward.
All in all the movie is good as it offers something like we've never seen before. I must say that it is one of the most unique movies that I have seen. The story, the costume, and the setting are all unique in their own ways. I have seen lots of movies with settings in the ocean but none like Waterworld it is indeed very unique. There is also a saying in the movie that sets it apart from the rest of the movies situated in the ocean, it is, the "Nothing's free in Waterworld" dialogue by Kevin Costner.
I recommend this movie to those who are for something new. Though it is an old movie I can say that it is a classic in its own right. I think you cannot see any movie just like it. There are others out there but it can't be compared with Waterworld.
That is all for now guys, catch you up with the next one. Wishing you all safety, good health, and abundance.
