A few days ago, was released on the Netflix platform, the series entitled The Fall of the House of Usher , which consists of 8 chapters and is inspired by the stories of the American writer and poet Edgard Allan Poe. This writer is one of my favorites of the horror genre and from this, you can imagine the great expectations I had regarding this series because I love his stories and much of what I write, is inspired not only in everyday events but also in his works.
I will try to be as objective as possible to have a broad view of the series because I am familiar with Poe's works. I could not avoid being very critical (not to say toxic ha,ha,ha) at one point but I left that aside to become more analytical and see the adaptation of the hand of Mike Flanagan to have a more solid opinion and not stay only in the superficial, try to see all the edges to not get stuck in a brief opinion so, with this I want to start my review of this series inspired by the gothic horror of the great Poe.
Hace unos días, se estrenó en la plataforma de Netflix, la serie titulada La caída de la casa Usher , la cual, consta de 8 capítulos y esta inspirada en los cuentos del escritor y poeta estadounidense Edgard Allan Poe. Este escritor, es uno de mis favoritos del género de horror y partiendo de esto, se imaginarán las expectativas tan grandes que tenía con respecto a esta serie ya que amo sus cuentos y gran parte de lo que yo escribo, está inspirado no solo en los sucesos cotidianos sino que también, en las obras él.
Voy a tratar de ser lo mas objetiva posible tener una visión amplia de la serie porque conozco las obras de Poe. No pude evitar ponerme muy critica (Por no decir tóxica ja,ja,ja) en un punto pero dejé de lado eso para ponerme más analítica y ver bien a fondo la adaptación de la mano de Mike Flanagan para tener una opinión mas sólida y no quedarme solo en lo superficial, intentar ver todas las aristas para no quedarme estancada en una opinión escueta así que, con esto quiero dar comienzo a mi reseña de esta serie inspirada en el horror gótico del gran Poe.
- Trama/Plot:
The series, as I said, is based on the stories of Edgard Allan Poe and part of the one entitled: The Fall of the House of Usher, which gives name to the series in general. The production is not only based on that story, but on many more, making each one sequentially concatenated to form a single story (Poe's stories are not related, they are rather individual but with some similarities).
It all begins with the characters of Madeline and Roderick Usher. Two brothers who run a pharmaceutical company that has caused millions of deaths in the world. Roderick has 6 children, each of whom represents a Poe story and this is shown in the titles of each episode (Each chapter is named after a Poe story). The deaths and plot development in each are based on these stories).
Not only does the series offer this, but it also gives small winks and references to other stories such as: Hop-Frog, The Premature Burial, Morella, Berenice, The Cask of Amontillado, among others. Also, the names, both of the children and other characters shown, are present in the original stories such as: Detective Dupin (Poe's detective par excellence), Anabel Lee, Leonor, Eliza (Mother in Poe's real life and also, it was the middle name of the one who was his wife), among others that for those of us who read his work, were easy to detect. I'm sure I missed some of them because I don't remember everything but I did identify almost all the references.
The series has its good things and its bad things. This I mentioned was the first plus point I found.
La serie , como dije, esta basada en los cuentos de Edgard Allan Poe y pate del titulado: La caída de la casa Usher , el cual, da nombre a la serie en general. La producción no solo esta basada en ese cuento sino que mas bien, en muchos mas haciendo que cada uno se concatene de forma secuencial formando una única historia (Los cuentos de Poe no tienen relación , son más bien individuales pero con algunas similitudes).
Todo comienza con los personajes de Madeline y Roderick Usher . Dos hermanos que llevan adelante una compañía farmacéutica que ha provocado millones de muertes en el mundo. Roderick, tiene 6 hijos los cuales, cada uno representa una historia de Poe y eso se ve en los títulos de cada episodio (Cada capitulo, tiene por nombre una historia de Poe. Las muertes y desarrollo de la trama en cada uno se basan en dichos cuentos).
No solo ofrece esto la serie sino que tambien, da pequeños guiños y referencias a otros cuentos como: Hop-Frog, el entierro prematuro, Morella, Berenice, El tonel de amontillado, entre otros. También, los nombres, tanto de los hijos como otros personajes que se muestran, están presentes en los cuentos originales como: El detective Dupin (El detective por excelencia de Poe), Anabel Lee, Leonor, Eliza (Madre en la vida real de Poe y también, fue el segundo nombre de la que fué su esposa), entre otros que para los que leímos su obra, eran fáciles de detectar. Seguramente alguno se me pase porque no recuerdo todo pero si que identifiqué casi todas las referencias.
La serie tiene sus cosas buenas y sus cosas malas. Esto que mencioné fue el primer punto a favor que hallé.
I'm going to be blunt. It starts off horrible. Something I didn't know was that the series would be adapted to modern times. I was expecting dreary, medieval scenarios, even with places set in the same way and I was really disappointed at first and even felt cringe when they talked about superficial things like tik tok and other social networks of today.
In the first few chapters they handle very vulgar language and I couldn't help but fall into comparisons. I felt that it didn't even peek into what Poe was like who described everything with such subtlety and in such a poetic way, that to hear such rudeness and see such promiscuity explicitly felt like an insult to the author. Really, until the Black Cat chapter, I wanted to get on the screen and slap the bunch of spoiled Usher kids. The dialogue was super empty, meaningless and had nothing of the original work.
Yes, I went into toxic mode and didn't want to watch anymore. I was suffering but, I decided to give it a chance and what a great decision because from The Tell-Tale Heart on, things changed radically.
Voy a ser directa. Comienza horrible. Algo que no sabía era que la serie seria adaptada a la época moderna. Yo me esperaba escenarios lúgubres, del medievo incluso con lugares ambientados de la misma forma y realmente me decepcioné al principio e incluso, sentí cringe cuando hablaban de cosas tan superficiales como tik tok y otras redes sociales de hoy en día.
En los primeros capítulos se maneja un lenguaje muy vulgar y no pude evitar caer en comparaciones. Sentí que ni siquiera se asomaba a lo que era Poe que describía todo con tanta sutileza y de forma tan poética, que escuchar tanta grosería y ver tanta promiscuidad de forma explícita me pareció un insulto al autor. Realmente, hasta el capitulo del Gato negro , quería entrar a la pantalla y darles bofetadas a la sarta de niños malcriados Usher. Los diálogos estaban super vacíos, carentes de sentido y nada tenia de la obra original.
Si, me puse en modo tóxica y ya no quería ver más. Estaba sufriendo pero, decidí darle una oportunidad y vaya que gran decisión ya que a partir de El corazón delator , la cosa cambia radicalmente.
The story takes on a different color. For starters, the deaths are extremely gory. Poe makes them more subtle (and sometimes they don't even happen) but that gave the touch to each episode and I would even say that, in spite of being so bloody, they are poetic and go according to the story (except for the black cat that I don't know what they wanted to do there).
Carla Gugino's character (my favorite) is present throughout the plot and I would say that she is the one who gives weight to the whole script along with Roderick Usher and Dupin. The performances of the three are masterful and manage to rescue the spectral essence of Poe (especially Gugino
playing Poe's famous raven, representing the death and madness of each of the characters). Even the dialogues that the author overturned in his books begin, giving it that poetic touch that it lacked at the beginning. By the end I felt that Poe had taken over the series and risen from the dead.
My favorite phrase of the author, taken from the poem "Leonora", which appeared in the series and I was thrilled to hear it from the mouth of Madeline Usher's character: What is madness but the highest form of intelligence?.
La historia toma otro color. Para empezar, las muertes son sumamente sangrientas. Poe las hace mas sutiles (E incluso no ocurren a veces) pero eso le dió el toque a cada episodio e incluso diría que, a pesar de ser tan sangrientas, son poéticas y van acorde a la historia que les tocó (Menos el gato negro que no se que quisieron hacer ahí).
El personaje de Carla Gugino (Mi favorita) está presente en toda la trama y diría yo, que es el que le da peso a todo el guión junto a Roderick Usher y Dupin. Las actuaciones de los tres son magistrales y logran rescatar la esencia espectral de Poe (Sobre todo Gugino encarnando a al famoso cuervo de Poe, representando la muerte y la locura misma de cada uno de los personajes). Incluso, comienzan los diálogos que el autor volcó en sus libros dándole, ese toque poético del cual carecía al principio. Llegando al final sentí que Poe se había apoderado la serie y resurgido de la muerte.
Mi frase favorita del autor , extraída del poema "Leonora" , que salió en la serie y me emocioné al oírla de la boca del personaje de Madeline Usher: ¿Qué es la locura sino la forma mas elevada de inteligencia?.
Two more points in favor: The social criticism of capitalist companies such as pharmaceutical companies that profit from health at the cost of millions of deaths and the criticism of the use of AI as a way of life to solve everything, are lapidary and give you a very strong blow of reality for you to reflect.
Lastly, the exposure of an author like Poe. My husband knew nothing about him until this series where we would watch together and I would explain his work to him. He loved him and I loved that he knew about him. I know it was adapted to modern times to attract a teenage audience and I thought it was great (I took the beginning to be done that way on purpose to capture this audience) so that today's generations know him as well.
To close, my favorite chapter was the end, where everything ends up making sense. It is epic, poetic, sublime. The dialogues, the scenography, the performances (especially of detective Dupin and Roderick plunged into absolute madness), the staging with the raven, the devastating and lapidary message of Verna (Gugino's character) everything is perfectly gloomy, depressing, somber and faithful to how the Fall of the House of Usher was, so if you read the original story, you will not be disappointed.
I highly recommend it. The beginning to people who know the original work, can be tortuous and boring but believe me that as the plot progresses, everything changes and you will not regret to continue watching. An adaptation worthy of being called a tribute to the precursor of modern horror literature, who began to establish this genre in the collective imagination. Dos puntos más a favor: La crítica social a las empresas capitalistas como las farmacéuticas que lucran con la salud a costa de millones de muertes y la crítica al uso de la IA como forma de vida para que te resuelva todo, son lapidarias y te dan un golpe de realidad muy fuerte para que reflexiones.
Por último, el dar a conocer a un autor como Poe. Mi esposo no sabia nada de él hasta esta serie donde íbamos viendo juntos y yo le explicaba sobre su obra. Lo amó y amé que el conociera de él. Se que fue adaptada a tiempos modernos para atraer público adolescente y eso, me pareció genial (El principio lo tomé como que fue hecho así a propósito para captar este público) así tambien, las generaciones de hoy , lo conocen.
Para ir cerrando, mi capítulo favorito fue el final, donde todo termina de cobrar sentido. Es épico, poético,. sublime. Los diálogos, la escenografía, las actuaciones (Sobre todo del detective Dupin y Roderick sumido en la mas absoluta locura) , la puesta en escena con el cuervo , el mensaje tan devastador y lapidario de Verna (El personaje de Gugino) todo es perfectamente lúgubre, deprimente, sombrío y fiel a como fue la Caída la casa Usher así que, si leíste el cuento original, no te vas a decepcionar.
La recomiendo totalmente . El principio a la gente que conoce la obra original, puede ser tortuoso y aburrido pero créanme que a medida que avanza la trama, todo cambia y no se arrepentirán de seguir viendo. Una adaptación digna de llamarse un homenaje al precursor de la literatura del terror moderno, quien comenzó a instaurar este género en la imaginación colectiva .
