A few days ago I started watching for the third time a series that has a special place in my heart, and while watching one of the chapters I thought "Many more people should know about this wonderful series", which led me to make this post, which more than a review, will be a style of recommendation and a bit of my perspective and personal opinion, without so much hubbub of talking about the plot to avoid spoilers and live your experience.

Hace unos días empecé a ver por tercera vez una serie que tiene un lugar especial en mi corazón, y mientras veía uno de los capítulos pensé “Muchas más personas deberían saber de esta maravilla de serie”, lo que me llevó a hacer este post, que más que una reseña, será un estilo de recomendación y un poco de mi perspectiva y opinión personal, sin tanto barullo de hablar de la trama para evitar spoilers y que vivan su experiencia.
About a week ago I started watching, along with my siblings and my aunt, Ryan Murphy's series "POSE". You may be familiar with Ryan Murphy's most popular television works, such as "Dahmer", "Glee" or "American Horror Story", and you may notice that the producer often gives a spotlight and a voice to the LGBTQ+ community, and what better than to bring this recommendation to a day to start Pride month.
I wanted to watch it with my aunt because she has a friend who had already seen it and had recommended it to her, and the series is about a marginalized community in the 80s, giving us a perspective of what that lifestyle was like, a window into an important piece of history, I felt it was a bit like educating my aunt about a culture, a culture that doesn't have as much visibility and to which I belong, it felt ideal.
Hace más o menos una semana empecé a ver, junto a mis hermanos y mi tía, la serie de Ryan Murphy “POSE”. Puede que conozcan trabajos televisivos más populares de Ryan Murphy, tales como “Dahmer”, “Glee” o “American Horror Story”, y pueden notar que el productor muchas veces le da un foco y una voz a la comunidad LGBTQ+, y qué mejor que traer esta recomendación a un día para empezar el mes del orgullo.
Quise verla con mi tía pues ella tiene una amiga que ya la había visto y se la había recomendado, y la serie trata de una comunidad marginada en los 80s, dándonos una perspectiva de lo que era ese estilo de vida, una ventana a un pedazo importante de historia, sentí que era un poco como educar sobre una cultura a mi tía, una cultura que no tiene tanta visibilidad y a la que yo pertenezco, se sintió idóneo.
The series POSE is based on the lives of a group of people belonging to the LGBTQ+ community, the African American and Latino community of the 80s and 90s, showing us a wide range of characters that you come to love and hate and that, at the end of the day, shows you what it was like for them back then. All through an underground culture known as "Ballroom", belonging to gay African Americans and gay Latinos, created back then in New York City.
The Ballroom culture could be described as events, events where we see a lot of dances, parades, catwalks, fantasy and performance, but to describe it with simple words is impossible, it is something much bigger, that worked to make visible and fight for the human rights of LGBTQ+ people. Series like Pose, documentaries like Paris is Burning serve to educate a little more about it.
La serie POSE se basa en la vida de un grupo de personas pertenecientes a la comunidad LGBTQ+, a la comunidad afroamericana y latina de los 80s y 90s, mostrándonos una alta gama de personajes que llegas a amar y a odiar y que, al final del día, te muestra lo que era para ellos en aquel entonces. Todo a través de una cultura underground conocida como “Ballroom”, perteneciente a afroamericanos y latinos gay, creada en aquel entonces en la ciudad de Nueva York.
La cultura de Ballroom podría describirse como eventos, eventos donde vemos bastantes bailes, desfiles, pasarelas, fantasía y performance, pero describirlo con sencillas palabras es imposible, es algo mucho más grande, que funcionó para visibilizar y luchar por los derechos humanos de las personas del colectivo LGBTQ+. Series como Pose, documentales como Paris is Burning sirven para educarse un poco más al respecto.
In the series we have our protagonists, many of them Trans, and they tell us a little of their daily lives, their evolution as people and their desire to succeed, both in the Ballroom and on a more global level. We have Blanca (MJ Rodriguez), a crucial character and the pillar of her house, being a Trans woman who decides to form the House Evangelista to give shelter to excellent artists, good-hearted people who were thrown out of their homes either because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Elektra (Dominique Jackson), another of the main characters and also mother of a house, the legendary House Abundance, who has one of the best evolutions, because she starts as a person who looks selfish and ambitious, but in reality she is a person that life has hardened and has had to forge a strong character to face all the abuses she lived through. Among my favorite characters is also Angel, a young sex worker and model, with a charming and dreamy personality. And I can't leave without mentioning the great Billy Porter in the lead role of Pray Tell, one of the leaders of the Ballroom and a designer, a character that leaves you speechless.
En la serie tenemos a nuestros protagonistas, muchos de ellos Trans, y nos van contando un poco de su vida cotidiana, su evolución como personas y sus ganas de triunfar, tanto en el Ballroom como en un nivel más global. Tenemos a Blanca (MJ Rodriguez), personaje crucial y el pilar de su casa, siendo una mujer Trans que decide formar la Casa Evangelista para dar refugio a excelentes artistas, personas de buen corazón que fueron botados de sus casas ya sea por su orientación sexual o por su identidad de género.
Destaca Elektra (Dominique Jackson), otra de las protagonistas y también madre de una casa, la legendaria Casa Abundance, que tiene una de las mejores evoluciones, pues empieza siendo una persona que se ve egoísta y ambiciosa, pero que en realidad es una persona que la vida ha endurecido y ha tenido que forjar un carácter fuerte para enfrentar todos los abusos que vivió. Entre mis personajes favoritos también está Angel, una joven trabajadora sexual y modelo, con una personalidad encantadora y soñadora. Y no puedo irme sin mencionar al gran Billy Porter en el papel principal de Pray Tell, uno de los dirigentes del Ballroom y diseñador, un personaje que te deja sin palabras.
The performances in the series are nothing short of stellar, even awarding important prizes to these actors, such as an Emmy for "Best Lead Actor in a Drama" to Billy Porter, being the first openly gay black man to receive it, and a Golden Globe for "Best Actress in a Television Series - Drama" to MJ Rodriguez, being the first trans woman to receive this important award in a major category.
And it's not just my point of view, as the series has an incredible critical reception, as on Metacritic it has a score of 76 / 100, based on 52 reviews. I think the reviews are accurate, as the series is not only important in a socio-cultural context, but also has a first class entertainment, being enjoyable from the first chapter to the end of it.
Las actuaciones en la serie son nada menos que estelares, incluso otorgándole premios importantes a dichos actores, tal cómo un Emmy de “Mejor Actor Principal de Drama” a Billy Porter, siendo el primer hombre negro abiertamente gay en recibirlo, y un Globo de Oro de “Mejor actriz de serie de televisión - drama” a MJ Rodriguez, siendo la primera mujer trans en recibir este importante premio en una gran categoría.
Y no solo es mi punto de vista, pues la serie cuenta con una increíble recepción por parte de la crítica, ya que en Metacritic cuenta con un puntaje de 76 / 100, basado en 52 críticas. Me parece que las críticas son acertadas, pues la serie no solo es importante en un contexto sociocultural, sino que también cuenta con un entretenimiento de primera, siendo disfrutable desde el primer capítulo hasta el final de la misma.

The series touches on important issues, such as the life of sex workers, death in the community, the rise and pandemic of HIV/AIDS, the transition process and the lifestyle of what was a highly discriminated community in previous decades. I think I really like all this visibility they give, this space to learn through people who, whether good or bad, are people at the end of the day, and deserve respect.
I have seen how many people who had no idea about this culture, this lifestyle, radically change their perspective and begin to feel much more empathy, and I think that's one of the things I like most about this series. I can't say enough about what a wonderful experience it is, this explosion of life, color, dance and diverse presences that enrich you culturally in a significant way.
La serie toca temas importantes, como la vida de trabajadoras sexuales, la muerte en la comunidad, el auge y pandemia del VIH/sida, el proceso de transición y el estilo de vida de lo que fue una comunidad altamente discriminada en anteriores décadas. Creo que me gusta mucho toda esta visibilidad que dan, este espacio para aprender a través de personas que, tanto buenas o malas, son personas al fin y al cabo, y merecen respeto.
He visto como muchas personas que no tenían ni idea de esta cultura, de este estilo de vida, cambian radicalmente su perspectiva y empiezan a sentir mucha más empatía, y creo que esa es una de las cosas que más me gusta de esta serie. Me quedo corto en palabras para decir la maravillosa experiencia que es, esta explosión de vida, color, baile y presencias diversas que te enriquecen culturalmente de una manera significativa.
Finally, I come with all the excitement in the world to recommend this series, especially in this important month for me. It is an excellent series, from start to finish, entertaining, educational, full of drama, comedy and iconic moments, that will leave you wanting more. By the way, I am just starting it with my aunt and she is liking it, you should just give it a chance with your minds open and willing to learn about a culture that does not have the necessary visibility and that is important in today's society.

Es una serie excelente, de inicio a fin, entretenida, educativa, llena de drama, comedia y momentos icónicos, que te dejará con ganas de más.
