What better way to start making posts in this community than with my favorite movie, Fight Club, god I love this movie, I saw it a few years ago and it was a shock to my life, which is categorized by the internet as a cult movie, for its exquisite script where it presents you with a puzzle that you start to put together at the end of the movie, besides leaving you totally deconstructed as a person and start questioning how you lead your life so far.
Que mejor manera de empezar a hacer publicaciones en esta comunidad que con mi película favorita, Fight Club, dios amo esta película, la vi hace algunos años y fue un golpe que dio a mi vida, la cual esta categorizada por la internet como una película de culto, por su guion tan exquisito en donde te presenta un rompecabezas que empiezas a armar al final de la película, además de dejarte totalmente deconstruido como persona y empezar a cuestionar como llevas tu vida hasta ahora.
The narrator and protagonist of the film (he has no name, he just adopts different nicknames in his plot), starts in the film with a gun in his mouth, someone pointing it at him and asking him to say his last words, then moves on to another scene long before the one I just said.
El narrador y protagonista de la película (no tiene nombre, solo adopta diferentes apodos en su trama), empieza en la película con una pistola en la boca, alguien apuntándolo y pidiéndolo decir sus últimas palabras, luego pasa a otra escena mucho tiempo antes de aquella que acabo de decir.
The main character is a 30 year old guy who suffers from a terrible insomnia where he sees visions of other people and wakes up in places where he has not gone (remember this for later), he is tired of his monotonous life so boring and normal, his house is full of Ikea furniture, he works in an office with gray colors and people as boring as him, without any partner or relationships, where he suffers extreme work stress.
El protagonista es un tipo de 30 años que sufre de un terrible insomnio donde ve visiones de otras personas y se despierta en lugares a donde no ha ido (recuerda esto para luego), está cansado de su monótona vida tan aburrida y normal, su casa está llena de muebles de Ikea, trabaja en una oficina con colores grises y gente tan aburrida como él, sin ninguna pareja o relaciones, donde sufre un extremo estrés laboral.
One day he decides to go to a building where focus groups meet for talks and self-help conferences. There are some interesting workshops such as "cure your repression in 30 days", "my hepatitis group", "smiling at testicular cancer", among others.
Un día decide ir a un edificio donde se reúnen grupos focales para hacer charlas y conferencias de autoayuda. Allí hay unos talleres interesantes como “cura tu represión en 30 días”, “mi grupo de hepatitis”, “sonriéndole al cáncer de testículos”, entre otros.
After a year of attending these workshops it seems that Cornelius, let's call him that since it is my favorite nickname he has, cures his insomnia, realizing that there are people with a life as destroyed as his, as well as sharing his sadness with them. There he meets Marla Singer, who is an imposter who also attends these help groups, without having any problem, she is a Cornelius version woman, she has done the same as him to feel more self-confident and live more than the poor devils who attend these talks.
After seeing Marla so much in these encounters, he regains his insomnia and has a very bad time, his facade of a cheater in which he lied about having hepatitis and not having testicles is over.
Con un año de estar asistiendo a estos talleres parece ser que Cornelius, vamos a llamarlo así ya que es mi apodo favorito que él tiene, cura su insomnio, al darse cuenta que hay personas con una vida tan destruida como la de él, además de compartir su tristeza con ellos. Allí conoce a Marla Singer, que es una impostora que también asiste a estos grupos de ayuda, sin tener algún problema, es un Cornelius versión mujer, ha hecho lo mismo que él para sentirse más segura de sí misma y vivir más que los pobres diablos a los que asisten a esas charlas.
De tanto ver a Marla en estos encuentros, vuelve a recobrar su insomnio y a pasarla muy mal, se acaba su fachada de tramposo en la cual mentía de tener hepatitis y no tener testículos.
On one of his business trips he meets Tyler Durden on a plane flight, played by actor Brad Pitt (excellent work of him in this film), after this Cornelius whole life would change dramatically.
Tyler Durden is a charismatic soap salesman and total flirt, he breaks all the schemes, he is always one step ahead of Cornelius, he wears the clothes he wants without having a defined taste for fashion, with a dominating character and a physique to beat your face to a pulp if he wanted to. We could say that he is an anarchist, carefree and very proud to be human, his ultimate dream is to destroy capitalism and all modern creations such as big business, which according to Tyler, have damaged the essence of man. Cornelius and Tyler become friends during the flight, and upon arrival at their destination, Tyler offers him his contact card.
En uno de sus viajes de negocios conoce en un vuelo de avión a Tyler Durden, personificado por el actor Brad Pitt (excelente trabajo de el en esta película), luego de esto toda la vida de Cornelius cambiaria de forma dramática.
Tyler Durden es un carismático vendedor de jabón y ligón total, rompe todos los esquemas, esta a un paso adelante que Cornelius siempre, viste la ropa que le da la gana sin tener un gusto definido por la moda, con un carácter dominador y un físico de partirte la cara a golpes si quisiera. Podríamos decir que es un anarquista, despreocupado y muy orgulloso de ser humano, su máximo sueño es destruir el capitalismo y todas las creaciones modernas como las grandes empresas, que según Tyler, han perjudicado la esencia del hombre. Cornelius y Tyler se hacen amigos durante el vuelo, y al llegar a su destino, Tyler le ofrece su tarjeta de contacto.
While Cornelius was on a business trip, when he gets off the plane and arrives at his apartment, he finds a great tragedy: His apartment is on fire, it has exploded, apparently due to a gas leak. Cornelius has nowhere to go, he has been left homeless, however, he remembers Tyler's contact card, the soap salesman he met on the plane. Cornelius calls him from a pay phone, telling him of his tragedy, and they decide to meet at a bar. From this bar scene come some of the best cult scenes in the history of cinema.
Mientras Cornelius estaba de viaje por motivos laborales, al descender del avión y llegar a su departamento, se encuentra con una gran tragedia: Su departamento está en llamas, ha explotado, aparentemente por una fuga de gas. Cornelius no tiene donde irse, se ha quedado sin casa, sin embargo, se acuerda de la tarjeta de contacto de Tyler, el vendedor se jabón que conoció en el avión. After leaving the bar, Tyler proposes to Cornelius to stay at his place in exchange for a fight, not a fight out of anger, but because Tyler liked to fight and feel physical pain, which according to him, made him stronger. They both fight and like the feeling of releasing stress through fighting. Cornelius goes on to live with Tyler in a giant, abandoned, dilapidated house.
The analogy of Cornelius suffering from insomnia is a metaphor of the film, which makes him see that he is neither asleep nor awake, he is always doped up, and the fights are a way to wake him up, to get him out of the automatic state of his life until his death.
Al salir del bar, Tyler le propone estar en su casa a cambio de una pelea a Cornelius, no era una pelea por ira, si no que a Tyler le gustaba pelear y sentir dolor físico, que según él, lo hacía más fuerte. Ambos pelean y les gusta la sensación de liberar el estrés mediante las peleas. Cornelius pasa a vivir con Tyler en una casa gigantesca, abandonada y en pésimo estado.
La analogía de que Cornelius sufra insomnio es una metáfora de la película, la cual lo hace ver que no está dormido ni despierto, esta dopado siempre, y las peleas es esa manera de despertarlo, sacarlo del estado automático que va su vida hasta su muerte.
They decide, under the bar, in the subway, to make a club of men who are encouraged to fight each other, obviously in a "friendly" way and without rancor at the end of the fight. The fight club is a success, and gathers dozens of men ready to fight. In these fights the men escape from all their daily afflictions of running a dumb job where they don't get paid enough, lack of money, sickness, troubled families, all those middle-aged adult problems come to be released by fighting to drain all that pain.
Deciden, debajo del bar, en el subterráneo, hacer un club de hombres que se animen a pelear entre ellos, obviamente de manera “amigable” y sin rencores al terminar la pelea. El club de la pelea es un éxito, y reúne a decenas de hombres listos para pelear. En esas peleas los hombres escapan de todas sus afecciones diarias de llevar un trabajo tonto en donde no les pagan lo suficiente, la falta de dinero, enfermedades, familias problemáticas, todos esos problemas del adulto de mediana edad vienen a ser liberadas mediante peleas para drenar todo ese dolor.
Then it becomes very strange because they start to do masculinity challenges, to see who is the craziest to do things, to do whatever they want, to hit someone randomly in the street, to steal satellite TV antennas, to explode TV windows, and they escalate to terrorism, and they escalate to terrorism, destroying statues and a plan to blow up the loan banks to free everyone from their debts, total madness, they are all unhinged and form a kind of cult where they believe whatever nonsense Tyler says and repeat it.
Luego se vuelve muy extraño porque empiezan a hacer retos de masculinidad, de a ver quien esta mas locos de hacer las cosas, a hacer lo que les da la gana y ya, a darle un golpe aleatorio a alguien en la calle, robar antenas de televisión por satélite, explotar vitrinas de televisores, y van escalando hasta llegar al terrorismo, destruyendo estatuas y un plan de volar los bancos de préstamos para liberar a todos de sus deudas, una locura total, todos están desquiciados y arman una especie de culto donde creen cualquier tontería que diga Tyler y la repiten.
For example there is a scene where a fat guy with tits dies and his real name is Robert Paulson, Cornelius amazed sees him lying on the stretcher and recites his name, to which the others begin to copy it and say the name all out loud, and from that moment anyone who dies is called Robert Paulson, and at this point everyone is brainwashed.
Por ejemplo hay una escena donde un gordo con tetas muere y su nombre real es Robert Paulson, Cornelius asombrado lo ve tendido en la camilla y recita su nombre, a lo cual los demás lo empiezan a copiar y dicen el nombre todos en voz alta, y a partir de ese momento cualquier persona que se muera le dicen Robert Paulson, ya en este punto todos tienen el cerebro lavado.
At the end of the film we discover that Tyler Durden is a product of Cornelius' imagination, due to his dissociative personality disorder. He is his alter ego, the person Cornelius would want to be if he had the courage to break free from the everyday and the mundane, leave his job and material possessions and pursue what he truly longs for. It was he himself who blew up his luxury apartment full of designer clothes, acting as Tyler.
Al final de la película descubrimos que Tyler Durden es un producto de la imaginación de Cornelius, debido a su trastorno de personalidad disociativo. Es su alter ego, la persona que Cornelius querría ser si tuviera el valor de liberarse de lo cotidiano y lo mundano, dejar su trabajo y las posesiones materiales y perseguir lo que de verdad anhela. Fue él mismo el que hizo explotar su lujoso apartamento lleno de ropa de marca, actuando como Tyler.
Throughout the film there are clues that Cornelius was already sick in the head, in a fight with himself to frame his boss, he said he felt like fighting against Tyler, even an explanation of one of Tyler's jobs that was a machinist in a movie theater, where he had to change tapes without anyone noticing, another metaphor that alludes to when he changed pilots in the mind of Cornelius.
En toda la película se ven pistas de que ya Cornelius estaba mal de la cabeza, en una pelea con el mismo para inculpar a su jefe, dijo que se sentía como pelear contra a Tyler, incluso una explicación de uno de los trabajos de Tyler que era maquinista en una sala de cine, donde debía de cambiar de cintas sin que nadie se diera cuenta, otra metáfora mas que hace alusión a cuando cambiaba de piloto en la mente de Cornelius
At the end Cornelius tries to commit suicide, but the one who is killed is Tyler, this scene is the same we see at the beginning of the film, where he responds differently to when he has the gun in his mouth. The explanation that I see is that Cornelius went through several stages to become the man he should be, at first his life doing everything that others told him to do, even the television and furnishings in his house took the course of his life, the things he bought ended up possessing him. Then the version of him as Tyler, who would be that evolved but destructive man with everything, letting his anger flow with the world and venting in order to find the true path in his life which is to be reborn, in this metaphor where he "commits suicide" and Tyler comes out dead, he comes out as a new man, with new aspirations and even a partner who is Marla herself.
Al final Cornelius se intenta suicidar, pero el que resulta muerto es Tyler, esta escena es la misma que vemos al comienzo de la película, donde responde diferente a cuando tiene el arma en la boca. La explicación que yo veo es que Cornelius paso por varias etapas para poder convertirse en el hombre que debería de ser, al principio su vida haciendo todo lo que los demás decían que haga, incluso la televisión y amoblados en su casa llevaban el curso de su vida, las cosas que compraba lo terminaban poseyéndolo. Luego la versión de el cómo Tyler, que sería aquel hombre evolucionado pero destructivo con todo, dejando fluir su rabia con el mundo y desahogándose para poder encontrar el camino verdadero en su vida que es renacer, en esta metáfora donde se “suicida” y sale muerto Tyler, sale como un hombre nuevo, con nuevas aspiraciones e incluso una pareja que es la propia Marla.
