Our family experience watching “Michael” at the movies 🍿 [ENG-ESP]

Today I want to tell you about a very special family outing we had last weekend. We went to the movies to see “Michael,” the new biopic about the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

To be perfectly honest, I’ve never been the biggest Michael Jackson fan, mainly because I don’t usually listen to much music in English. However, it’s impossible to deny the enormous impact he had on pop culture and how much we miss artists as versatile as him today. But the real reason for this outing was my husband, who is a huge fan. Thanks to him, I started listening to his music, and I confess that what drove me was curiosity about how they would portray his complex life on the big screen.

Although I’m not here today to write an in-depth review with spoilers, I can tell you that, for my taste, I would have liked them to delve a little deeper into certain aspects of his life.

Hoy les quiero contar sobre una salida familiar muy especial que tuvimos el pasado fin de semana. Nos fuimos al cine a ver Michael, la nueva película biográfica sobre el Rey del Pop, Michael Jackson.

Para serles muy sincera, nunca he sido la más grande fanática de Michael Jackson, principalmente porque no suelo escuchar mucha música en inglés. Sin embargo, es imposible negar el impacto gigantesco que tuvo en la cultura pop y lo mucho que hacen falta artistas tan completos como él en la actualidad. Pero el verdadero motivador de esta salida fue mi esposo, quien sí es súper fanático. Gracias a él empecé a escuchar su música, y confieso que lo que me impulsaba era la curiosidad por ver cómo retratarían su compleja vida en la gran pantalla.

Aunque hoy no vengo a hacer una crítica profunda con spoilers, sí les puedo adelantar que, para mi gusto, me hizo falta que profundizaran un poco más en ciertos aspectos de su vida.

My husband had been saying he wanted to go see it ever since the first promotions came out. Since our kids are already teenagers and didn’t know much about Michael Jackson’s story, we thought it was the perfect opportunity to take them to learn about the career of one of the greatest artists of all time.

We arrived at the theater on Saturday afternoon for the 5:45 pm showing. Thank goodness we had the foresight to arrive more than an hour early! The line to buy tickets and popcorn was super long.

While we were waiting to get into the theater, I thought it was a bit of a letdown that the theater had a gorgeous photo booth with a red carpet for the premiere of The Devil Wears Prada 2, but there was absolutely no Michael Jackson-themed decor. Anyway, I wasn’t going to miss the chance, so I took my photos with whatever was available! You’ve got to make the most of the scenery in life.

Mi esposo estuvo diciendo que quería ir a verla desde que salieron las primeras promociones. Como nuestros hijos ya son adolescentes y no sabían mucho sobre la historia de Michael Jackson, pensamos que era la oportunidad perfecta para llevarlos a conocer la trayectoria de uno de los mejores artistas de todos los tiempos.

Llegamos al cine el sábado por la tarde para la función de las 5:45 pm. ¡Menos mal que tomamos la previsión de llegar con más de una hora de anticipación! La cola para comprar las entradas y las cotufas estaba larguisima.

Mientras esperábamos para entrar a la sala, me pareció un detalle un poco “chimbo” que el cine tuviera un stand de fotos precioso con alfombra roja para la premier de The Devil Wears Prada 2, pero no tuvieran absolutamente nada decorado sobre Michael Jackson. De todas formas, ¡yo no iba a perder la oportunidad y me tomé mis respectivas fotos en lo que había disponible! En la vida hay que aprovechar los escenarios.

We were among the first to enter the theater, but little by little it began to fill up in an impressive way. I asked my son to take a photo of the place to capture the moment, because it had been ages since I’d seen a movie theater like this. I think the last time I experienced something similar was in 2004, when I went to see The Passion of the Christ. It was great to feel that collective energy again!

We had a blast. For me, the biggest highlight of the afternoon was seeing my kids come out excited, humming and talking about Michael Jackson’s music. As for me, I left knowing a lot more about his early days in the music industry and, above all, that intense father-son relationship that practically becomes the driving force and main plot of the entire movie.

Honorable mention to the giant combo we bought: it came with extra-large popcorn, tequeños, peanuts, Doritos, and soda. It was so huge that the movie was almost over and we were still eating popcorn.

It was a wonderful afternoon, and it’s definitely a movie I’d watch again. It’s moving, and it’s easy to see why Michael was someone who, despite being an adult, had the soul of a child and wanted to experience all the childhood he wasn’t able to enjoy back then. The casting was spot-on—since the actor is a direct relative—and at times we can actually see Michael Jackson in his eyes, so 100 points. I’d love to see a sequel, but given how controversial his life became after the movie ended, I doubt anyone would dare to make one.

Fuimos de los primeros en entrar a la sala, pero poco a poco se empezó a llenar de una manera impresionante. Le pedí a mi hijo que tomara una foto del lugar para registrar el momento, porque tenía años de años sin ver una sala de cine así de llena. Creo que la última vez que viví algo parecido fue en el 2004, cuando fui a ver La Pasión de Cristo. ¡Fue genial sentir esa energía colectiva otra vez!

La pasamos súper bien. Para mí, el mayor logro de la tarde fue ver salir a mis hijos entusiasmados, tarareando y hablando de la música de Michael Jackson. Por mi parte, salí conociendo mucho más sobre sus inicios en la industria musical y, sobre todo, esa intensa relación paterna que se convierte prácticamente en el motor y la trama principal de toda la película.
Mención honorífica al combo gigante que compramos: traía cotufas extra grandes, tequeños, maní, Doritos y refresco. Era tan enorme que la película ya estaba casi terminando y nosotros todavía seguíamos comiendo cotufas.

Fue una tarde excelente y definitivamente es una película que volvería a ver, es emotiva y es facil entender porqué Michael era una persona que a pesar de ser un adulto tenía alma de niño y quería vivir toda esa infancia de la que no pudo disfrutar en su momento. El casting súper acertado, al ser el actor familiar directo, hace que por momentos veamos en sus ojos a Michael Jackson,así que 100 puntos. Me gustaría una segunda parte, pero con lo polémica que fue su vida apartir de dónde quedó la película, dudo que alguien se atreva a desarrollarla.
