I once read a comment from a person who watched a cinematic trailer of a very popular video game saying that the cinematic trailer is way much better than the "Movie" of the video game itself. Once in a while I also see my husband watching cinematic trailers of games that he hasn't played before.
Sometimes, while I am on social media I see some movie trailers of popular games and one of them is Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. I have heard about D&D (the game) before and I learned that it is popular. I love movies, but I do not exactly know how many of the movies that I watched were derived from popular games.
After watching a trailer for Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves I did not watch immediately. After several days I found myself finally watching it. I must admit that I love this kind of setting (image below). This kind of setting is one of my weaknesses when it comes to movies.
Also, I am surprised that the main character of the movie is actually telling his story in front of a jury, which actually made me glued to my set and got me very interested in watching the movie.
The thief, spy, and medieval narrative of the movie got so interesting that I started to guess the plot of the movie to which I guessed one element of the whole narrative of the movie successfully, the others made no surprise to me at all, I was like "I knew it", but I do not actually guessed it right.
The movie is something you would want to watch if you are a fan of Chris Pine, D&D (the game), a medieval movie setting, magic, fantasy, and of course great costumes. Costumes are something that stands out to me the most when I am watching the movie. Even if I am not that interested in the movie itself if I saw the costume I will give it a shot.
Some elements of the movie's narrative can be easily guessed as I have seen it before in so many movies that I watch but still a good one to watch. The fact that it is a comedy and humorous adaptation of the game is still good. And did I just say earlier that the costumes are great? Below is the character Kira in her very simple yet very elegant wardrobe.
The characters talking to the dead is also one element of the narrative of the movie as it is very interesting and also hilarious at the same time. Imagine talking to the dead without any fear and without you (the one is watching not getting nervous that the character will be killed by the dead).
Aside from being a fantasy movie the movie also give us a lesson or two like not giving up until you accomplish your mission or goal. You might fail nine times and be successful only one time erasing all the struggle and burden that you have gone through in order to get what you want. Also, it teaches us that admitting to be a bad person is not bad at all. It will give admiration than condemnation.
Not only that, a situation such that the two supporting characters of the movie endured and experienced can give meaningful and life-changing chances between two people. So, you would never know what would a situation or experience brings for you and for your life.
All in all, the movie is a good one, it captures the element of a good medieval type of movie. It did a good job of portraying the magical side of the movie. And of course, just like I said the costume is great. The script is good too, but I felt that it can also be improved. The whole is something that a moviegoer can guess successfully (once or twice). How the script pivoted the climax of the movie is something that I have not seen before in all of the movies that I already watched, a very genuine approach if you ask me. But it just didn't have that X-factor to be a mega hit just like all the Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter movies. Being a light-hearted comedy movie seems to have not worked out for the movie to be a blockbuster. But still worth it since it makes a viewer like me instantly glued to my screen from the very start of the movie.
If I am going to rate this movie I would give it 7 out of 10 since I felt that 6 is very low and is very close to being 8 but it just couldn't hit the right spots to be an 8 but it is close. If it could only pull a thing or two on both Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter movies it would have a blockbuster. If it did, I am sure it will have a sequel or two.
I would recommend this movie to those that are looking for a light-hearted movie. I am sure they will enjoy this movie and will keep them guessing about the twists of the movie and how the climax would come to a conclusion, it is a good watch.
