Intro
When Pitch Perfect was released I did not even have a single interest in it because the title Pitch Perfect to me doesn't ring a bell. Then fast forward to the height of the recent pandemic while everyone was quarantined inside homes I asked my husband for some movies to watch. He gave it a thought for a while and he said "You're a girl, so why not start with Pitch Perfect?" I asked him if he already saw it, and he said yes and told me that it was a great movie and I was going to like it. But at the back of my mind, I knew the movie but I didn't have an ounce of interest in it. But because my husband said that it was a great movie and I am going to like it I am obliged to watch it. Fast forward to today, I want to write a review about it so I watched it again.
I thought musical movies were boring but when I watched Pitch Perfect it gave me reasons to consider watching musical movies after watching it.
Narrative
The movie revolves around an upcoming college Freshman named Beca (Anna Kendrick) at Barden University whose main interest is about becoming a DJ. But little did she know that something amazing was going to happen to her by chance and the rest is history. There are also twists and surprises within the movie which are unexpected.
Thoughts
I was skeptical when my husband told me about Pitch Perfect but when I started to watch it I was immediately hooked. Thanks to the creative intro of the movie using the "Universal Studios" background music as a performance piece of the Barden University Treblemakers while performing their piece for the International Collegiate Championship of A Cappella. Needless to say, the movie started with a bang! But then disaster happens when one of the members of Barden University Bellas puked during her solo performance.
After the performance of the Treblemakers I thought it was it and nothing special was going to happen in the next five minutes or so. But then when the Barden Bellas (the protagonist group of the movie) finally was their turn I was hooked again (for the second time).
I was actually surprised when the movie started with the A Cappella of Universal Studios background music but then I was also surprised when the Barden Bellas sang "The Sign" by Ace of Base and I thought, wow, The Sign, as an A Cappella was super amazing.
And now for the scene of the arrival of students at the university prior to the start of classes. I think it is a bit overkill that a lot of parked vehicles are inside the campus. But the scene did the job of picturing the time of arrival of students at the university.
I do not know why the movie portrayed that the roommate of Becca is grumpy or crabbed. I think that choosing a nice roommate for Becca is very predictable which is why they opted for the opposite maybe to be different or just the scriptwriter wanted to spice things up, I don't know.
The scene when the clubs are recruiting for members seems to be "over-acting" to me and it made me think, does the singing like the Treblemakers is doing during the recruiting of members actually happen in real life (in the US)?
Okay, so, here's to the positive. The audition scene part of the movie is amazing, they did it in a style that I have never seen before in a movie. So, it is a job well done for the movie.
The rip-off is probably one of the most fun parts of the movie because it makes you think that the act is very random and it did.
There is also a "twist", maybe, in the movie when the Barden Bellas were not able to place inside the top two of the Nationals which gives them the right to compete in the ICCA (International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella). I thought the Barden Bellas would be able to place inside the top two. But the script has others in mind and opted not to make their place in the top two. Instead, something has to happen in able for the Bellas to have the right to compete for the ICCA.
The internal struggle within the Barden Bellas is something that is very common. But the moment to which the leader of the group conceded the leadership to a freshman was a surprise. Again, good job for the script. I thought that the leader of the Bellas would be a leader until she graduated and then Becca would be the one taking the reign after the leader graduates.
Another surprise comes when the struggle culminates in the seemingly chaotic scene that Becca saw when she went on to see the group.
I would love to see Becca and her roommate getting along but I think it did not happen.
Conclusion
The movie is great, there is no doubt about it. The kinds of music used were amazing. The portrayal of the scenes is effective except for the following: a lot of parked cards inside the university prior to the beginning of the school year, the role of the roommate Becca, and the singing scene of Treblemakers while recruiting members are ongoing. If one is into music he/she is going to love it. The choice of songs is just amazing. The A Cappella is of course, amazing. The portrayal of each character as a college student is effective.
This is the second time that I watched this movie and it is still a good watch and is still very entertaining in many aspects except of course some scenes that I mentioned but they don't give negative to the whole movie itself. And if someone is going to ask me what musical movie they are going to watch I am going to recommend this movie to them.
And so, my verdict is... this is a must-watch movie, recommended.
