Elvis, directed by Baz Luhrmann (The Great Gatsby, Australia, Moulin Rouge) and starring Austin Butler as the King of Rock 'n Roll and Tom Hanks as his manager Tom Parker, explores life and music of Elvis Presley, an icon of North American culture, through his relationship with the colonel, his enigmatic, manipulative and vicious manager. Although during the more than two and a half hours of duration a little of Elvis's childhood and something of his family is shown, the story emphasizes the complex dynamic that existed between Presley and Parker that spanned more than 20 years, from the Elvis's rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the cultural revolution and loss of innocence in America that followed World War II. The fifties, sixties and seventies were decades of great change in the country, of key events in the future of its history and the lives of its citizens.

Needed to say, the film is narrated by Parker. In other words, the story is told from his perspective, which doesn't always favor him, because as the film progresses, we feel him increasingly responsible for the tragedy that the King's death meant at just 42 years old.

Es necesario decir que la película está narrada por Parker. Es decir, la historia está contada desde su perspectiva, lo que no siempre lo favorece, pues conforme avanza la película, lo vamos sintiendo cada vez más responsable de la tragedia que significó la muerte del Rey a sus escasos 42 años.

Now, I understand that in every story there's a villain. And I also understand that giving that villain a voice to tell the story is a resource that can give a special focus, but I didn't like the way the script was structured and executed. Those moments where we see Parker talking to the camera as if inside a dream, a nightmare or maybe inside his own mind, they felt very cartoony. That the fourth wall is broken, that a character speaks to the public, has been done many times in a better way. Here, despite the great experience and talent of Tom Hanks, I didn't enjoy his character because of the way he told the episodes of his life or the life of the Rock 'n Roll legend, with a ridiculous atmosphere of mystery and a cartoon villain profile.

Ahora bien, entiendo que en toda historia haya un villano. Y entiendo también que darle voz a ese villano para que cuente la historia es un recurso que puede dar un enfoque especial, pero no me gustó la forma en que fue estructurado y ejecutado el guión. Esos momentos en los que vemos a Parker hablar con la cámara como dentro de un sueño, una pesadilla o quizás dentro de su propia mente, los sentí muy caricaturescos. Que se rompa la cuarta pared, que un personaje le hable al público, se ha hecho muchas veces de una mejor manera. Acá, a pesar de la gran experiencia y talento de Tom Hanks, no disfruté su personaje por esa forma en que contaba los episodios de su vida o de la vida de la leyenda del Rock 'n Roll, con una ridícula atmósfera de misterio y un perfil de villano de caricatura.

Fortunately, the protagonist was up to the task. Austin Butler embodied Elvis Presley in a great way. Butler sang all the songs from the King's early life. I mean, when we see him, in the fifties, record several singles that started to get him on the charts and playing on the radio, all those songs are 100% Austin Butler (And he did amazing!). Later, when we see Elvis at his peak, all those songs were recorded mixing the voices of Austin and Elvis himself, to the point that the same actor confessed in an interview that he didn't know where one's voice began and the other's ended. Of all the musical scenes, although there were several great moments (the Christmas special of his return, the first performance we see him, his appearances in Las Vegas) my favorite was the interpretation of my favorite Elvis song: Suspicious minds. Butler was absolutely brilliant in this scene.

De todas las escenas musicales, aunque hubo varios grandes momentos (el especial navideño de su regreso, la primera presentación que le vemos, sus participaciones en Las Vegas) mi favorito fue la interpretación de mi canción favorita de Elvis: Suspicious minds. Butler estuvo absolutamente brillante en esta escena.

Desde hace años he oído muchísimo la música de Elvis y he visto varias de sus entrevistas y la voz de Butler es producto de un gran talento y una excelente preparación. Se escucha como Elvis.

But aside from enjoying Elvis' songs and Butler's incredible performance, I didn't like the movie. The figure of Elvis is shown, his music, his musical roots, his addiction problems, the disagreements he had with critics, his problems with the law, his exhaustion, his toxic relationship with Parker, all of that is present and has to be (although some of these elements are shown very briefly), but in terms of direction, photography, editing, script, visual effects, none of that seduced me during the almost three hours of duration and if it hadn't been for Austin Butler, I think that the film would have been a box office flop. Pero más allá de disfrutar de las canciones de Elvis y de la increíble actuación de Butler, la película no me gustó. Se muestra la figura de Elvis, su música, sus raíces musicales, sus problemas de adicción, los desencuentros que tuvo con la crítica, sus problemas con la ley, su agotamiento, sus relación tóxica con Parker, todo eso está presente y tiene que estar (aunque algunos de estos elementos son mostrados muy brevemente), pero en cuanto a dirección, fotografía, montaje, guión, efectos visuales, nada de eso me sedujo durante las casi tres horas de duración y si no hubiera sido por Austin Butler, creo que la película habría sido un fracaso de taquilla.
