I had wanted to see this film for years, but I wanted to wait until I had read the book on which it is based, the novel Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by the Polish Olga Tokarczuk, Nobel Prize for Literature, which I enjoyed very much and I feel that this adaptation, directed by Agnieszka Holland and co-written with Stepan Hulik, does it a lot of justice.

Hace años que tenía ganas de ver esta película, pero quise esperar hasta haber leído el libro en el que está basada, la novela Sobre los huesos de los muertos de la polaca Olga Tokarczuk, Premio Nobel de Literatura, la cual disfrute muchísimo y siento que esta adaptación, dirigida por Agnieszka Holland y co escrita junto a Stepan Hulik, le hace mucha justicia.

Pokot, known as Spoor in English, is set in cold Poland and tells the story of Janina Duszejko, although she prefers not to be called by her first name, an older woman , former engineer, amateur astrologer (she has a lot of information related to horoscopes, zodiacal signs, ascending planets, astrological charts) and of course, she is a vegetarian. Mrs. Duszejko lives in a small town in the Polish mountains with beautiful landscapes in the middle of the wildest nature and the silence of winter. One night, one of their neighbors finds a dead body near their house. The victim, also a neighbor, is a furtive hunter who died under mysterious circumstances. However, that strangeness begins to grow when, with the passage of time, other villagers begin to die in the area, what is curious? all of them were furtive hunters and the death of each one was marked by the sign of some animal: footprints in the snow, the corpse of some animal, the presence of some insect... it's nature's revenge: the balance in the face of so much unjustified death.

Pokot, conocida como El rastro en español, se sitúa en la fría Polonia y cuenta la historia de Janina Duszejko, aunque prefiere que no la llamen por su nombre de pila, una mujer mayor, ex ingeniera, astróloga aficionada (posee mucha información relacionada con los horóscopos, los signos zodiacales, planetas ascendentes, cartas astrales) y por supuesto, es vegetariana. La Sra. Duszejko vive en un pequeño pueblo en las montañas polacas con parajes hermosos en medio de la naturaleza más salvaje y el silencio del invierno. Una noche, uno de sus vecinos encuentra un cadáver cerca de la casa de ambos. La víctima, también un vecino, es un cazador furtivo que murió en extrañas circunstancias. Sin embargo, esa extrañeza comienza a creceer cuando, con el paso del tiempo, empiezan a morir en la zona otros de los pueblerinos, ¿lo curioso? todos ellos eran cazadores furtivos y la muerte de cada uno estuvo marcada por la señal de algún animal: huellas en la nieve, el cadáver de algún animal, la presencia de algún insecto... es la venganza de la naturaleza: el equilibrio ante tanta muerte injustificada.

The first to pronounce this hypothesis is Mrs. Duszejko herself, whose vegetarianism, as in almost all cases, is linked to a deep love and great respect for animals in general, starting with her two dogs. At school, where she teaches English, on the street, in shops, wherever she is, Mrs. Duszejko always denounces man's abuse of nature.

La primera en pronunciar esta hipótesis es la propia Sra. Duszejko cuyo vegetarianismo, como en casi todos los casos, está ligado a un profundo amor y un gran respeto por los animales en general, empezando por sus dos perros. En la escuela, en donde da clases de inglés, en la calle, en las tiendas, en cualquier lado que esté, la Sra. Duszejko siempre denuncia el abuso del hombre sobre la naturaleza.

The hunting of animals out of season, the fur trade, the exploitation of the lives of animals for entertainment or the use of their fellow humans; all of this has been noted and reported to the authorities by the protagonist who has had to see, over and over again, how impunity permeates practices as savage as poaching. That is why, when the first hunter dies, to the horror of the others, Mrs. Duszejko seems to be the only one who does not regret it and the first to shout this vengeance of nature. If men kill different animal species for business and entertainment, if they even make them reproduce and then kill them, what could be wrong with an animal killing a man? Isn't it, in some way, the search for a balance? Don't animals also have the right to kill us? These are strong tricky questions that arise in the viewer's mind when watching this film.

La caza de animales fuera de temporada, el tráfico de pieles, la explotación de las vidas de los animales para entretenimiento o aprovechamiento de sus semejantes humanos; todo eso ha sido notado y denunciado a las autoridades por parte de la protagonista que ha tenido que ver, una y otra vez, cómo la impunidad impregna prácticas tan salvajes como la caza furtiva. Por eso, cuando muere el primer cazador, ante el horror de los demás, la Sra. Duszejko parece ser la única que no lo lamenta y la primera en vociferar esta venganza de la naturaleza. Si los hombres asesinan a diferentes especies animales como negocio y entretenimiento, si incluso los hacen reproducirse para después asesinarlos, ¿qué de malo puede tener que un animal mate a un hombre? ¿no es, de alguna manera, la búsqueda de un equilibrio? ¿no tienen también los animales derecho a matarnos? Son cuestionamientos fuertes, preguntas peliagudas que surgen en la mente del espectador al ver esta película.

Like Okja, by Oscar winner Bong Joon-ho, Pokot is an invitation to vegetarianism, to turn our stomachs, cemeteries of corpses, into a garden for seeds and vegetables. I am not a vegetarian (although it is true that I consume little meat) but most of the people who support vegetarianism do so out of respect for animals and the arguments put forward in this film go in that direction, so if you are vegetarian, you will like that part; And if you're not, who knows? maybe this movie will change your mind.

Al igual que Okja, del ganador del Oscar Bong Joon-ho, Pokot es una invitación al vegetarianismo, a convertir nuestros estómagos, cementerios de cadáveres, en un jardín para las semillas y los vegetales. Yo no soy vegetariano (aunque es cierto que consumo poca carne) pero la mayoría de las personas que apoyan el vegetarianismo lo hacen por respeto a los animales y los argumentos que se esgrimen en esta película van en esa dirección, con lo cual, si eres vegetariano, esa parte te gustará; y si no lo eres, ¿quién sabe? quizás esta película te haga cambiar de parecer.

With good direction, excellent photography, a good adapted script that does justice to the essence of the novel and the protagonist, this environmental thriller is a good recommendation for those who, accustomed to Hollywood and its blockbusters, are not very familiar with the European cinema. Without straying too far from the commonplaces of the best-known cinema on this side of the world, Pokot also brings something new, different, in form and substance, with a message worthy of reflection.
