Two years after Casino Royale this sequel was released, again with Daniel Craig in the lead role. It set a UK opening weekend box office record, grossing £15.5 million ($25 million) in its opening weekend, beating the previous record of £14.9 million held by Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, that speaks highly of the mark left by the previous film, the first in the franchise with Craig as the protagonist; however, this sequel did not receive the same reviews.

Recall that at the end of Casino Royale, James Bond was betrayed by Vesper, the woman he loved, who turned out to be part of a criminal organization that used her in exchange for saving her husband's life. For this reason, in Quantum of Solace agent 007 sees his new mission as a personal vendetta. During their investigation, Bond and M realize that the organization that blackmailed Vesper is much more complex and dangerous than they imagined: they discover that there are criminal infiltrators in virtually every organization and political, economic, and military level, including their own MI6. After connecting the dots and traveling several kilometers, Bond meets Camille (Olga Kurylenko), a woman who has her own reasons to take revenge on a powerful character. Camille sets Bond on the trail of Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric), a ruthless businessman and senior member of the mysterious organization, whose goal is both simple and ruthless: to control one of the world's most important natural resources in exchange for to overthrow the government of a South American country and help an opposition military man to become the first president through a coup.

Por ello, en Quantum of Solace el agente 007 se plantea su nueva misión como una vendetta personal. Durante su investigación, Bond y M se dan cuenta de que la organización que chantajeó a Vesper es mucho más compleja y peligrosa de lo que imaginaban: descubren que hay infiltrados criminales prácticamente en todas las organizaciones y niveles políticos, económicos y militares, incluido el propio MI6. That is the plot of the movie. We have the typical elements of a James Bond movie (or almost): a complex and mysterious criminal organization with international reach, a refined, cruel and inaccessible villain, a political-economic plot that threatens the lives of citizens, a beautiful and exotic damsel in distress, a fancy car, explosions, fight sequences... so why didn't people like the movie so much? what's wrong with the story?
Esa es la trama de la película. Tenemos los elementos típicos de una película de James Bond (o casi): una compleja y misteriosa organización criminal con alcance internacional, un villano refinado, cruel e inaccesible, un complot político-económico que amenaza la vida de los ciudadanos, una hermosa y exótica damisela en peligro, un coche lujoso, explosiones, seuencias de peleas... entonces, ¿por qué no gustó tanto la película? ¿en qué falla la historia?
Firs of all, I think that the trigger of the plot does not do justice to the protagonist. James Bond, the iconic 007 agent with a license to kill is no ordinary action hero. Taking a mission as personal revenge is not in the style of Ian Flemming's character: James Bond is not John Wick. Then we have Camille, who, although she seeks her revenge as well and teams up with Bond to get it, is not as important or as interesting as Vesper was in Casino Royale. Okay, we don't want Bond to fall in love every movie, either, but something is missing from Camille's character compared to her peers in previous and subsequent stories.
Como primer punto, creo que el detonante de la trama no hace justicia al protagonista. James Bond, el icónico agente 007 con licencia para matar no es un héroe de acción común. Tomarse una misión como una venganza personal no es del estilo del personaje de Ian Flemming: James Bond no es John Wick. Luego tenemos a Camille, que si bien busca su venganza también y se alía con Bond para conseguirla, no resulta un personaje tan importante ni tan interesante como fue Vesper en Casino Royale. Está bien, tampoco queremos que Bond se enamore en cada película, pero algo falta en el personaje de Camille en comparación con sus semejantes de historias previas y posteriores.
And the third point I think is violence. The excess of violence. I commented in a past blog that in Casino Royale we saw a tougher, more violent Bond than in previous films, but in Quantum of Solace he goes too far: a 2012 study from the University of Otago in New Zealand found it the most violent film in the franchise so far with 250 "trivial or severely violent" acts, the most depictions of violence in any Bond film (Dr. No has 109 such acts). Fights, shootings, explosions, murders, there are in large quantities and, of course, we are talking about a heartfelt revenge.
Y el tercer punto creo que es la violencia. El exceso de violencia. Comenté en un blog pasado que en Casino Royale vimos a un Bond más duro, más violento que el de las películas anteriores, pero en Quantum of Solace se excede: un estudio de 2012 de la Universidad de Otago en Nueva Zelanda la encontró la película más violenta en la franquicia hasta el momento con 250 actos «triviales o severamente violentos», la mayor cantidad de representaciones de violencia en cualquier película Bond (Dr. No tiene 109 actos de este tipo). Peleas, tiroteos, explosiones, asesinatos, hay en grandes cantidades y es que, claro, estamos hablando de una sentida venganza.
On the positive side, I can highlight the performance of Daniel Craig, I think he does it very well and the relevance of the environmental issue. Dominic, the villain, hides his true interests behind the facade of Greene Planet an environmental organization that professes to save the planet and its natural resources when in reality what Dominic wants is to exploit and appropriate them. In addition, I liked that his main objective in the plot was not to steal diamonds, works of art or the federal reserves but to control a cheaper, simpler and yet much more valuable resource: water. Another thing I found positive was the length of the movie. With its 106 minutes, it is the shortest film in the franchise with Craig and the only one that does not reach two hours, which works in its favor because, if it had been longer, I think it would have had more defects.
En lo positivo, puedo destacar la actuación de Daniel Craig, creo que lo hace muy bien y la relevancia del tema ambiental. Dominic, el villano, oculta sus verdaderos intereses tras la fachada de Greene Planet una organización ecologista que profesa salvar al planeta y sus recursos naturales cuando en realidad lo que Dominic quiere es explotarlos y apropiarse de ellos. Además, me gustó que su objetivo principal en la trama no fuese robar diamantes, obras de arte o las reservas federales sino controlar un recurso más económico, sencillo y sin embargo muchísimo más valioso: el agua. Otra cosa que encontré positiva fue la duración de la película. Con sus 106 minutos es la película más corta de la franquicia con Craig y la única que no llega a las dos horas, lo que juega a su favor porque, de haber sido más larga, creo que habría tenido más defectos.
In summary, Quantum of Solace is an acceptable action movie, with flaws in the script (which is not a Fleming adaptation) and in the construction of the characters. In my opinion, after Casino Royale, this movie is a step backwards, but at least it got liked enough that there were three more movies with Craig (so far) of which I have seen three to date (I'll post a review of Skyfall soon) and I need a couple more to do my personal ranking. I hope that after that Quantum of Solace is still at the bottom of my list.
En resumen, Quantum of Solace es una película de acción aceptable, con fallas en el guión (que no es ninguna adaptación de Fleming) y en la construcción de los personajes. En mi opinión, después de Casino Royale, esta película es un paso atrás, pero al menos consiguió gustar lo suficiente como para que hubiera tres películas más con Craig (hasta ahora) de las que he visto tres a la fecha (pronto subiré la reseña de Skyfall) y me faltan un par más para hacer mi ranking personal. Espero que luego de eso Quantum of Solace siga al final de mi lista.
