The awards season has begun and although there are almost three months to go before the Oscars gala, possible candidates for the different categories are already beginning to sound. As always, what happened at the Golden Globes is taken into account, in which Kristen Stewart was nominated for Best Dramatic Actress for her performance as Princess Diana in this film.
Ha comenzado la temporada de premios y aunque faltan casi tres meses para la gala de los Oscars, ya comienzan a sonar posibles candidatos para las diferentes categorías. Como siempre, se toma muy en cuenta lo sucedido en los Globos de Oro, en los cuales Kristen Stewart estuvo nominada a Mejor Actriz Dramática por su actuación como la princesa Diana en esta película.
The first thing to say about Spencer is that it doesn't tell Lady Di's life. I say this not only because it is set in a very short period, but also because it is not a strictly biographical feature film. At the very beginning of the film there is a subtitle that says "A fable about a real tragedy..." and throughout the film we realize that this biopic of one of the most remembered characters of recent decades takes certain licenses when sharing real facts with us. The story spans a pivotal Christmas weekend in the early 1990s, when Princess Diana - Diana Frances Spencer by name - decided that her marriage to Prince Charles wasn't working out, that she needed to leave a path she didn't felt like his own and that it had always been heavy and uncomfortable to her.
Lo primero que hay que decir de Spencer es que no cuenta la vida de Lady Di. No lo digo sólo porque se ambiente en un período muy breve, sino porque además no es un largometraje ajustadamente biográfico. Al mismísimo inicio de la cinta aparece un subtítulo que dice "Una fábula sobre una tragedia real..." y a lo largo de la película nos vamos dando cuenta de que esta biopic de uno de los personajes más recordados de las últimas décadas se toma ciertas licencias a la hora de compartirnos hechos reales. La historia abarca un fin de semana crucial a principios de los años 90, durante la Navidad, cuando la princesa Diana - de nombre Diana Frances Spencer - decidió que su matrimonio con el príncipe Carlos no estaba funcionando, que necesitaba desviarse de un camino que no sentía como suyo y que siempre le había resultado pesado e incómodo.
For this reason, as the film does not tell the story of Diana but rather is a vision, an interpretation, a fable, from now on, in this post, when I talk about Diana I will not refer to the historical character but to the character of this fiction. I am not here to judge or know how true this or that aspect of Diana of Wales's life is, but to talk about the film, plot and the character played by Stewart.
Por eso, como la película no cuenta la historia de Diana sino que es una visión, una interpretación, una fábula, en lo sucesivo, en este post, cuando hable de Diana no me referiré al personaje histórico sino al personaje de esta ficción. No estoy aquí para juzgar o saber qué tan cierto es tal o cual aspecto de la vida de Diana de Gales sino para hablar sobre la película, trama y el personaje interpretado por Stewart.
The role that the protagonist offers us handles a wide range of emotions: hysteria, paranoia, pain, sadness, illness, joy, happiness, confusion, resentment... It is no coincidence that the film begins with Diana lost in the English countryside while she was heading to the meeting with her family and other members of the Crown. This is precisely how the character feels for most of the story: lost. Diana is a woman of simple tastes who lives amid palaces and opulent decorations; she loves her freedom, but lives a prisoner of an itinerary that conditions not only her daily activities but also every garment she wears; she loves her two children, but lives next to a man who - everyone knows - is in love with another woman; and as if that were not enough, the possibility of one day becoming Queen weighs on her destiny, if her husband inherits the throne.
El papel que nos ofrece la protagonista maneja un variado rango de emociones: histeria, paranioa, dolor, tristeza, enfermedad, alegría, felicidad, confusión, rencor... no es casualidad que la película comience con Diana perdida en el campo inglés mientras se dirigía a la reunión con su familia y demás miembros de la corona. Precisamente así se siente el personaje durante la mayor parte de la historia: perdida. Diana es una mujer de gustos sencillos que vive en medio de palacios y decoraciones opulentas; ama su libertad, pero vive prisionera de un itinerario que condiciona no sólo sus actividades diarias sino incluso cada prenda que viste; ama a sus dos hijos, pero vive al lado de un hombre que - todo el mundo lo sabe - está enamorado de otra mujer; y por si fuera poco, pesa sobre su destino la posibilidad de convetirse algún día en Reina, si es que su esposo hereda el trono.
All that emotional burden, endured for longer than she would have liked, causes Diana various disorders: bulimia, insomnia, hallucinations... despite being a strong and determined woman, sometimes she is also a fragile and defenseless being who yearns for simple things that she lost at some point in her life and that now seem more distant than ever. Regardless of how true to reality is the story and the character that Chilean director Pablo Larraín presents us with, Diana - the one in the film - is an interesting character and is well played by Kristen Stewart; at first she couldn't convince me but as the film progressed her performance seemed more and more convincing to me.
Toda esa carga emocional, soportada durante más tiempo del que hubiera querido le provoca a Diana diversos trastornos: bulimia, insomnio, alucinaciones... a pesar de ser una mujer fuerte y determinada, a veces también es un ser frágil e indefenso que anhela las cosas sencillas que perdió en algún punto de su vida y que parecen ahora más lejanas que nunca. Sin importar qué tan fiel a la realidad sea el relato y el personaje que nos presente el Director chileno Pablo Larraín, Diana - la de la película - es un personaje interesante y está bien interpretado por Kristen Stewart; al principio no lograba convencerme pero a medida que avanzó el film su actuación me fue pareciendo más y más convincente.
Apart from the main performance, supported by other great actors and actresses (Sally Hawkins highlights), the other two things that I really liked about the film were the music and the photography. The melodies and songs selected to accompany the scenes and, on the other hand, the angles, the open shots, the camera sequences, seemed to me to be good reinforcements for the story, giving it greater visual and sensory strength. Overall I thought it was a good story and a good performance from Kristen. Además de la actuación principal, respaldada por otros grandes actores y actrices (destaca Sally Hawkins), las otras dos cosas que me gustaron mucho de la película fueron la música y la fotografía. Las melodías y las canciones seleccionadas para acompañar las escenas y, por otro lado, los ángulos, las tomas abiertas, las secuencias de cámara, me parecieron buenos refuerzos a la historia, la dotaron de mayor fuerza visual y sensorial. En general me pareció una buena historia y una buena actuación de Kristen. Más allá de si es históricamente correcta, o no, creo que Spencer es una buena película, ¿ustedes la vieron? ¿qué opinan?
