Ahora en cines
I've said it before: I'm not a big fan of horror movies. But sometimes you feel like going to the movies and when you arrive there are not many options, so you end up choosing based on the posters or the schedule without knowing exactly what you are going to find. And such was the case with this film.
Lo he dicho antes: no soy un gran fanático de las pelíulas de terror. Pero a veces uno tiene ganas de ir al cine y a la hora en que llega no hay muchas opciones, así que termina escogiendo en base a los posters o al horario sin saber exactamente con qué se va a encontrar. Y tal fue mi caso con esta cinta.
Once again I went to the movies without seeing any trailer, so I didn't know what the movie was about, but if I had read any synopsis I would have known that The Invitation tells the story of Evie, a young African-American woman from New York who after the recent death of his mother (his father had died years before) and out of curiosity to find a relative, she takes a DNA test through a particularly innovative system of genealogies and discovers a distant cousin who she never knew she had. This cousin arrives in New York and invites her to meet her new family at a lavish wedding in the English countryside, where she soon catches the attention of the host. Evie has doubts at first, but as in the vast majority of these stories, her life in New York is challenging and modest, so since she has nothing to lose, she ends up accepting the invitation and going to England to meet the family that, according to her cousin, is eager to meet her.
Una vez más fui al cine sin haber visto ningún avance, así que no sabía de qué trataba la película, pero de haber leído alguna sinopsis habría sabido que The Invitation cuenta la historia de Evie, una afroamericana joven neoyorquina que tras la reciente muerte de su madre (su padre había fallecido años antes) y por la curiosidad de poder dar con algún pariente se hace un test de ADN a través de un sistema particularmente novedoso de genealogías y descubre a un primo lejano que nunca supo que tuvo. Este primo llega a Nueva York y la invita a encontrarse con su nueva familia en una fastuosa boda en la campiña inglesa, en donde pronto captará la atención del anfitrión. Evie tiene dudas al inicio, pero como en la gran mayoría de estas historias, su vida en Nueva York es desafiante y modesta así que como no tiene nada que perder acaba aceptando la invitación y marchando a Inglaterra para conocer a la familia que, según le cuenta su primo, está deseosa de conocerla.
Normally I don't do spoilers so as not to ruin the experience for those who haven't seen the movie, but in this case I will do them precisely so as not to ruin those 104 minutes it takes to finish the story and explain to you why what you're going to see is not you think. Normalmente no hago spoilers para no arruinarle la experiencia a quienes no han visto la película, pero en este caso los haré precisamente para no arruinarles esos 104 minutos que tarda en acabar la historia y explicarles por qué lo que van a ver no es lo que creen que van a ver. Así que si aún en ese caso no quieren spoilers, abandonen acá su lectura. En caso contrario, continuad a su riesgo (y salvación).
Obviously the film begins with a kind of prologue typical of the genre: at night, a huge mansion, voices in the corridors, shadows and a frightened woman. These elements are predictable and yet sometimes necessary within these scripts because they mark the path along which the narrative will proceed. When the woman at the beginning commits suicide, we anticipate that there will be a ghost, perhaps herself (indeed the woman is seen later on a couple of times) or perhaps another entity that is the one who frightened her at the beginning. But then all the "terror" is set aside. In fact, during more than the first hour of the film there are perhaps two or three "horror" scenes that are not scary but the main focus of the entire script is the romance that arises between Evie and Walt, the owner of the mansion where the wedding will take place. The invitation, the reception, the room, Walt's chivalry, Evie's dresses, this Cinderella from the Big Apple, all these elements are shown in the best style of Netflix chick flicks (and not the best ones). Cliché after cliché Evie is seduced by this kind of British Christian Grey.
Obviamente la película inicia con una especie de prólogo propio del género: de noche, una inmensa mansión, voces en los pasillos, sombras y una mujer asustada. Estos elementos son predecibles y sin embargo a veces necesarios dentro de estos guiones porque marcan la senda por la cual avanzará la narrativa. Cuando la mujer del inicio se suicida prevemos que habrá un fantasma, quizá ella misma (efectivamente la mujer es vista más adelante en un par de ocasiones) o quizá otro ente que es quien la atemorizaba al inicio. Pero luego todo el "terror" es dejado de lado. De hecho, durante más de la primera hora de la película hay acaso dos o tres escenas de "terror" que no asustan pero el foco principal de todo el guión es el romance que surge entre Evie y Walt, el dueño de la mansión en donde se celebrará la boda. La invitación, el recibimiento, la habitación, la caballerosidad de Walt, los vestidos de Evie, esta Cenicienta llegada de la gran manzana, todos esos elementos son mostrados al mejor estilo de las chick flicks de Netflix (y no de los mejores). Cliché tras cliché Evie se deja seducir por esta especie de Christian Grey británico.
The amount of "romantic" scenes is such that one forgets that one is supposedly watching a "horror" movie. And then when the "horror" scenes appear, they are neither scary nor do they paint much of the plot, so the film ends up being a total nonsense. In some internet portals the film is tagged as Terror, Thriller; and some, the clearest, add Vampires (which is appreciated to know what people are going to find), but in reality the tags should be Romance, Chick Flick, Vampires and in smaller letters a mini tag that says Thriller . Very little horror, almost nothing. Not to mention that later, when the romance ends, the story unfolds disappointingly. At the beginning of the story I was moved when Nathalie Emmanuel (Missandei in GoT) appeared on the screen because she seems like a good actress to me, but in truth the film did not seduce me in the least.
Es tal la cantidad de escenas "románticas" que uno se olvida que supuestamente está viendo una película de "terror". Y luego cuando las escenas de "terror" aparecen, ni dan miedo ni pintan mucho en la trama, con lo que la película termina siendo un despropósito total. En algunos portales de internet el film está etiquetado como Terror, Thriller; y algunos, los más claros, agregan Vampiros (lo cual se agradece para saber con qué se va a encontrar la gente), pero en realidad las etiquetas deberían ser Romance, Chick Flick, Vampiros y en letras más chicas una mini etiqueta que dijera Thriller. De terror muy poco, casi nada. Sin contar que luego, cuando el romance acaba, la historia se desarrolla de forma decepcionante. Al comenzar la historia me emocioné cuando apareció en pantalla Nathalie Emmanuel (Missandei en GoT) porque me parece una buena actriz, pero en verdad la película no me sedujo en lo más mínimo.
I normally use this platform to recommend movies and in this case my recommendation would be precisely not to watch it. Perhaps I am being too harsh and I apologize if I offend someone with such strong statements, but I didn't find any redeeming element within this story that is as if Netflix coordinated a production between the people of Disney and L.J. Smith. Nathalie's acting is good but in that character within that plot she doesn't shine (in some scenes her beauty impacts, but not the character of Evie). Maybe I should stop going to the movies without seeing any trailer or knowing anything about the movie. I like it when a story surprises me, but as it happened to me this time, not all surprises are pleasant. Or maybe I should stop watching "horror" movies that seem to almost never hit me. You who have come this far, is there any horror movie (true horror) that you recommend? I read you in the comments.
Normalmente empleo esta plataforma para recomendar películas y en este caso mi recomendación sería precisamente no verla. Quizá estoy siendo demasiado duro y pido disculpas si ofendo a alguien con tan fuertes declaraciones, pero es que no encontré ningún elemento rescatable dentro de esta historia que es como si Netflix coordinara una producción entre la gente de Disney y L.J. Smith. La actuación de Nathalie es buena pero en ese personaje dentro de esa trama no brilla (en algunas escenas impacta su belleza, no así el carácter del personaje). Quizás deba dejar de ir al cine sin haber visto ningún avance o sin saber nada de la película. Me gusta cuando una historia me sorprende, pero como me pasó en esta oportunidad no todas las sorpresas son agradables. O quizás deba dejar de ver películas de "terror" que por lo visto casi nunca aciertan conmigo. Ustedes que han llegado hasta acá, ¿hay alguna película de terror (de terror de verdad) que me recomienden? Los leo en los comentarios.
