Day Shift, is the rated R action comedy about killing vampires. But is it any good? I guess that is the question I try and answer here.
The premise
Jamie Foxx players Bud Jablonski, a down-on-luck vampire hunter. His ex-wife is threatening to move across the country with their young daughter. Unless he is able to prove he is reliable and can come up with the money they need in a week's time. With this, we follow Bud in his desperate attempt to earn enough money that his ex-wife will stay.
Is it any good
I have to say it depends on what your expectations are. If you want an action movie with bad writing and ok action. Then this movie is for you. But if you crave a little substance with your action. Then I would say you are better off watching something else.
Oh, and the movie got Snoop Dog in it as well. In more than a cameo role. So if you are a fan of his then I guess it is a win for you. But if you don't like bad acting, and watching an old guy try and be cool and make almost all parts of the movie he is in worse. Then I guess it is a pass as well.
What do I mean by bad writing
As an example. At around halfway through the movie, Bud runs into his new neighbor, aka the good-looking girl that you know is a bad guy because that's how everyone writes them.
A little later Bud sees the girl talking to what clearly is a vampire and a bad guy. And when it is time for payback, after the badly written part where the bad guy just left Gus to be killed instead of just killing him. Man, this movie is just full of bad writing. Back to the first example.
He leaves to go get hit guns and whatnot. But also to get his revenge on the new neighbor he clearly knew to be a vampire. Becaus she has to be involved. When he gets there she is in the middle of moving out. They fight, despite her repeatedly saying she doesn't want to fight and clearly not killing him despite having the chance.
Then finally Bud stops fighting her and lets her speak. And she just says, she never wanted to do this, whatever the "this" is. It is not shown or told in the movie. And she was forced to do it. She was turned against her will.
She will now, for no apparent reason help him kill all the bad vampires. Like wtf???? The writing in this movie is really bad. And very poorly executed. Clearly, they are hoping the ok at best action will save the movie. But sadly it will not be able to save this "movie".
Grade 2/5, watch only if you have nothing else better to watch.
See you on the interwebs!
