Three generations of deadly women fight back against those who wish to take everything from them. Source
Sweet sweet death 🍒🍦☠️
The days of action movies being all about badass men are long behind us. To put things into perspective, there are people who think that the next James Bond should be female. The world looks nothing like it did fifty years ago. Thanks to that, we have been getting a lot of female-led action films that are pretty awesome. Today I want to talk about one of those action movies called Gunpowder Milkshake.
You are going to be seeing a lot of familiar women in this movie. The cast is packed with beautiful and killer talent to remind you that females can kill just as good as men. Karen Gilan stars as the main character Sam. The younger version of her is briefly in the film and is smoothly played by Freya Allen (The Witcher). Then we've got Sam's mother Scarlet who is played by Lena Headey (Game of Thrones). Anna May is Angela Bassett (American Horror Story) and many more women you will know.
For unknown reasons, Scarlet is forced to abandon her daughter Sam as a teenager. Same has no other option but to follow in her mother's footsteps and become a deadly assassin.
Men stand absolutely no chance in this film. Sam and all of the other women kick ass in every fight. The movie makes the guys look slow, stupid, and unable to deal with the speed and intelligence of women. Clearly, there is a message here, women trump men.
You might see this and think it looks like it is going to be pushing feminism in your face. It does happen, but it is easy to ignore in favor of the awesome fight scenes and sexy ladies who aren't afraid to bleed in order to make you bleed even more.
Same gets in a bad place and is forced to head to the library to exchange some books. This turns out to be a hidden lingo for secret contract killers called librarians. The whole metaphor works very well with the hidden guild and the elusiveness of the librarians.
These girls are there for each other and their teamwork keeps them from getting killed quite often. Sam is used to working alone, but there are certain times when the entire world is against you and an alliance needs to be formed.
As you can tell, I'm doing my best to leave out all of the major plot points in case you haven't already seen Gunpowder Milkshake. The name got my attention originally. I love the look and feel of everything going on once I finally gave the movie a chance.
Paul Giamatti as Nathan is the only major role filled by a man. He is kind of in-between wanting to help Sam and having to do his job and go against her. He struggles to make decisions when his alliance with Sam and Scarlet is on the line. As usual with me, work comes before everything else.
Sam gets stuck with an 8-year-old girl after a certain incident and they become pretty close. It seems absolutely insane that a kid somehow manages to get in the middle of so many dangerous situations. It looks like the third generation of female assassins may have just spawned.
You will probably be able to figure out that Sam and Scarlet end up meeting as adults and some craziness goes down. All of the action scenes in this movie are just so fun to experience, you've got to see it to believe it.
Gunpowder Milkshake reminded me of a couple of other fairly new action movies with females as the main characters. Jolt and Kate are both excellent films that follow a similar path of chicks that shoot guns. I actually wrote about Kate if you want to go back and check that out here
This film is an exciting watch and will probably leave a lot of you pretty happy after it. I'm sure there will be some men that can't stand the idea of females being more badass than them, but it is just a movie. Sit down, shut up, and try to enjoy things without overthinking. I'll leave you with the trailer. Decide for yourself.
