I am what they say I am 🐺
Before we start with all of this, I want to give a heads up that there will not be any spoilers in this article. We will not be focusing on the story, but rather the casting of the main character in The Witcher series on Netflix.
I hope to Allgod that you have at least heard of this hit tv show. If not, please allow me to wake you up with a very firm shake. The Witcher is quite possibly one of my favorite shows of all time and not just because I spent over 60 hours with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt video game. My love for the show is mostly due to the fact that the main character Geralt of Rivia is played so perfectly by Henry Cavill.
Geralt is a gray-haired man that is nearly invincible. Emotions don't even phase the guy, this Witcher is about as stoic as they come. His voice is easily recognized and his actions are always solidified by flawless execution. This kind of character, although extremely badass, could easily be viewed as boring by many. That may be the case if somebody besides Henry Cavill was playing Geralt, but luckily this guy nails it, and Geralt is a very likable character.
I just finished Season 2 of The Witcher and am absolutely hooked. It may be a while before the next season arrives, but we know for certain that seven seasons in total have already been greenlit. This show is doing extremely well and seems to be staying among the top shows on Netflix when the new seasons drop. There are many memorable characters in the show, but Geralt stands out as my favorite.
Henry Cavill is an avid gamer and is open about the fact that he has played a lot of The Witcher video games, as stated in this interview. His hundreds of hours spent with the game and natural talent as an actor are what allow him to play Geralt so well. It was an ideal match to cast somebody who is actually a fan of The Witcher and not just some big shot in Hollywood.
Most people first became aware of Henry Cavill thanks to his 2013 role as Superman in Man of Steel. DC Comics finally successfully rebooted the Superman franchise and now everybody recognizes Henry Cavill as the Last Son of Krypton. Although that is where Henry gained most of his fame, that was not his first acting gig.
There have been many other characters that Henry Cavill has played that showed he was quite capable of being somebody like Geralt. He was Melot in Tristan + Isolde. Albert Mondego in The Count of Monte Cristo. The Hunter in Red Riding Hood. Theseus in Immortals. Charles Brandon in The Tudors. None of those roles are exactly like Geralt, but each one possesses characteristics that are similar to Geralt.
You may not even be able to notice that Henry Cavill is who Geralt's role is filled by. The gray hair, scars, pale skin, and often blacked-out eyes make it possible to fail to recognize him. It also doesn't help that his voice sounds so crazy. Once you figure out that it is Henry Cavill, then you surely will understand just how strong his skills are to mask himself with such a character.
The humor that Geralt adds to situations is one of my favorite parts about him. He is so harsh and just says things that others may refrain from blurting out. We may get a smirk from Geralt, but I'm pretty sure I've never seen him laugh or cry.
If you are going to have an assassin who nobody messes with as your main character, going with Henry Cavill is a safe bet. If you want a character that fans will latch on to for years to come, Henry Cavill comes to mind yet again since it has already worked with Superman. You may be surprised to know that Henry Cavill also does all of his own stunts in The Witcher.
As soon as this show was announced, Henry Cavill was interested. Believe it or not, the producers did not immediately give him the role. This article mentions the fact that 200+ other men auditioned for the role. Can you imagine if they would have gone with another actor? Henry Cavill has worked out so perfectly, they made the right decision to go with him.
Oftentimes Geralt is not the most chatty fellow. He is able to say so much with simple actions like his grunts, facial expressions, or one of his favorite phrases "Fuck". It takes a true professional to be able to convey so many things with a character that many struggles to fully understand. I can only imagine how much stronger Henry Cavill's obsession with Geralt of Rivia will continue to grow as we get deeper into the story of The Witcher. Let's hope that we do not have to wait until December to see more of this show.
