Ending 2021 with a bang 💥
Hollywood does this thing where they make movies that feel so real to the point of tricking some viewers into believing the plot to be true to life. Don't Look Up is one of those movies that you must be careful not to take 100% literally. There are a lot of truths and revelations within this film, but if you were to believe that earth was going to be obliterated by a comet soon, then your life surely would not be at optimum levels of happiness.
Don't Look Up kind of came out of nowhere for me. I briefly saw it listed on Netflix and then heard that it was great from my brother during Christmas. I knew I had to see it. The giant list of famous actors in this film was enough to conjure up some massive intrigue in my mind. Just look at all of the names featured in this film.
Not only is this movie filled with talent, but they all show off some of their best performances. Leonardo DiCaprio killed it with his role of anxious Dr. Mindy. His character evolution is very entertaining to witness. I laughed so hard during his many panic attacks. It reminded me of people I know and it just seemed so true to life for many people who are uncomfortable in social situations.
The plot can be surmised like this:
Two low-level astronomers must go on a giant media tour to warn mankind of an approaching comet that will destroy planet Earth. Source
The world is too busy trying to make money, keep up with social media, and all of the other pointless things in life. Nobody seems to care about the impending doom that is nearly certain to occur on planet earth. Jonah Hill's character Jason Orlean is the summation of all the Americans with their heads down running the rat race. He is the Chief of Staff/Son of President Orlean (Meryl Streep) and goes head to head against Jennifer Lawrence's Kate Dibiasky in nearly every situation. Their dynamic is absolutely historical and Jonah Hill never seems to let up against poor Jennifer Lawrence, taking brutal shots left and right.
I couldn't help but relate most of the scenarios in this film to our reality. There are so many things going on that seem much more important than who won the last sports game, which celebrity is dating who, or which friend went broke, and which got rich. It is hard to not shake one's head at the fact that so many people are living their life blindly and they seem near impossible to wake up. I don't let this discouragement get me down though. We have to find a way to be humorous about things instead of dwelling and falling down a depressive dark hole.
Not only do I think that this movie is worth your time, I believe that you should rush to go watch it asap. The plot stays interesting the entire film, despite its 2+ hour run time. It is available on Netflix at the moment and is at the top of the popularity charts. I'm sure most people will either overthink this film or just get some laughs. If you are like me, you will find the balance between the two and leave thoroughly pleased.
I've been doing my best to avoid spoilers in this post, while also finding a way to encourage you to watch Don't Look Up soon. If you aren't already sold, I will tell you that the ending is fantastic. Oftentimes, movies are great and then end flat. Not this one. You are sure to be surprised and you will be happy to find out that several plot points all tie together nicely.
Don't Look Up is terrific. I am willing to bet that there are many people who hated this movie or find it to be depressing. That is an option, but with an open mind and solid sense of humor, you are going to love this one. Keep an eye out for all of the appearances from some of your favorite actors in Hollywood. There are even more people than I listed in the cast previously. Cameos from Chris Evans and Sarah Silverman for instance. They don't play major roles, but their faces tied in with memorable characters allow this movie to have memorable moments one after another.
I'll end this by leaving you with the trailer for Don't Look Up. If you are at all curious to see this and aren't convinced by my blog, then surely this video will seal the deal.
Have you watched this movie yet❓
I'd love to know what everyone is feeling about this movie. I feel like there will be a wide range of opinions. For those of you that loved Don't Look Up as much as I did, we sure got a great ending to films in 2021.
