Sometimes reviews just get it wrong. I can't believe that when I look at Lady of the Manor on IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes, the review score is so low. This film made me laugh out loud multiple times. If you have a dirty sense of humor, you surely will love this one. I guess critics just don't know how to laugh anymore.
Lady of the Manor stars Melanie Lynskey as Hannah, Justin Long as Max, Judy Greer as Lady Wadsworth, and Ryan Phillippe as Tanner. This movie truly is a high-spirited comedy. It is a clash of etiquette from old times and the filthy mouths of modern times. The combination is downright righteous in action.
Hannah is an alcoholic pothead who does little to nothing with her life. Her boyfriend is fed up with her and things don't seem to be getting better anytime soon. Hannah ends up in jail for one of the funniest reasons imaginable and that is the end of her relationship. She is left without a place to live and no money. She gets lucky and meets Tanner at the bar one night and he offers her a job at his family's historic manor that he just so happens to be forced to manage now.
Hannah is supposed to be a tour guide and tell stories about the old home in Savannah, GA. She knows literally nothing about the place and is terrible at the new gig. In fact, she isn't even sure how to behave like a lady, which is a major issue considering she is supposed to pretend like the former Lady of the Manor named Lady Wadsworth. This alarms the ghost of Lady Wadsworth and brings her back to teach Hannah many lessons.
Max shows up on Hannah's first day and decides that although he knows much about the manor's history, he likes Hannah and doesn't want to get her fired for sucking at her job. This starts a very odd friendship between the two. You can bet there will be many things to burst out in laughter over in this one.
The best parts of this film are all things that take you by surprise when they happen, so I do not wish to ruin those moments. I can easily recommend this film, as long as you actually have a sense of humor. If so, you are in for a good time.
