There is pretty much an infinite number of awesome movies and tv shows today. Netflix just released another new series called The Woman In The House Across The Street From The Girl In The Window. If that isn't the longest title ever, I'm not sure I want to know what is. The title is the first sign that this show is actually going to be funny. Kristen Bell does a great job of acting out in many different ways. She is a full-time wino who mixes her alcohol with her prescription meds. She is smart but also seems crazy half the time. Her character is a total cliche for many of the women today who are obsessed with wine, murder mysteries, and erotica.
The 8 episodes for this series are fairly short and easy to knock out. This entire first season could easily be completed in one binge sitting. It is the perfect show to squeeze in during a busy schedule if you are one of those people that can only manage one episode at a time. Let's talk more about what to expect from this surprising new series from Netflix.
Kristen Bell is Anna. She is a talented painter who has lost her creativity and her will to live her life due to trauma from her past. Her daughter Elizabeth died and it caused her and her husband Douglas to divorce. Since then, all she has done is be depressed.
Anna does pretty much nothing now but drink wine and read books. She spends the majority of most of her days in her cozy chair positioned right in front of a giant window. She has the perfect view to stare at her neighbor's houses all day long and see every single thing that happens. I'm not sure how she gets by with so few responsibilities in life, it must be nice.
One day Anna gets a new neighbor directly across the street. A man named Neil shows up out of nowhere and it doesn't take long for Anna and her lonely self to become obsessed with him. He has some trauma in his life as well, so the two understand each other easily. Learning more about Neil becomes one of Anna's favorite things to do.
Along with Neil is his daughter Emma. She is the sweetest girl and Anna and Emma become close in no time. Emma fills the void of Anna's dead daughter Elizabeth. You can tell that Emma was a great mom and Neil seems to be a pretty awesome dad. Maybe these two will be the perfect match for each other.
Anna tries her hardest to find a way to get closer with Neil and Emma, but she just can't win for losing. Her bright idea was to cook them a casserole. On the walk over to their house to deliver the casserole, it begins to rain. Anna has had severe Ombrophobia (fear of rain) ever since her daughter died. This causes major issues with the successful delivery of the casserole.
Despite not nailing her opportunity to get close with Neil and Emma, Anna somehow manages to still see them both regularly. Anna is constantly creeping from her wine-drinking chair in front of the window at her house. One day Anna thinks that she witnesses a murder in Neil's living room while she is staring out her window. Combining pills with alcohol can lead to hallucinations. So Anna is not sure whether or not what she saw out the window is real or fake. The show does an excellent job of keeping you guessing just like Anna is forced to do.
A dramatic show like this wouldn't be considered complete without some hot gossip. Anna's neighbors are often talking shit about her alcohol problem. She overhears this one day at the store and it of course causes her to build up some rage, which has to get out eventually.
Anna has one good friend named Sloane. She avoids her calls and texts pretty much every single time, but Sloane won't give up. They are real friends, but Sloane also likes Anna because Sloane is an Art Director and enjoys having Anna's paintings in her shows. Sloane is determined to get Anna's life back on track. That means no more wine and way more painting. This is not an easy battle and it is great watching the two and their opposing thoughts.
I actually really loved this show. The plot is full of interesting twists and turns, plus I caught myself laughing frequently. A show like this is something that is best experienced with as few spoilers as possible beforehand. I think that the show is meant to be a parody of murder mystery and erotic literature, which it does so successfully.
Although I am not big on this type of show usually, I was able to enjoy watching this a lot with my girlfriend. We both were happy to watch all 8 episodes in one weekend together. I think that a lot of other couples will be able to find a lot of enjoyment from The Woman In The House Across The Street From The Girl In The Window as well. Here is the trailer to give you a closer look at what to expect.
