I'm new to Disney➕
The many different streaming apps that I have a monthly membership to are really starting to pile up. I have access to Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, Starz, Apple TV+, Shudder, Prime Video, and now Disney+ to go along with the rest of the streaming apps.
It has been a few years since I last had access to Disney+. The most recent time that I used Disney+ was back in 2019 when Season 1 of The Mandalorian had just come out. Since then, so many awesome tv shows and movies have been added to the large library of film options on Disney's streaming service.
The first thing that I did upon logging into Disney+ was find what I wanted to add to my watchlist. There were many movies and shows that I have had my eye on. I can at last start catching up on all that I have missed the last couple of years. I'd say that mainly Marvel and Star Wars have my attention, but there are a few others as well.
I consider the following list of 12 movies and tv shows to be the best options of things to watch on Disney+. If you are used to streaming on the app, you probably have already seen most of these. If you are like me though, you are about to have a dozen great options of new things to spend your free time with.
1. Jungle Cruise
Based on Disneyland's theme park ride where a small riverboat takes a group of travelers through a jungle filled with dangerous animals and reptiles but with a supernatural element. Source
This one had my eye as soon as I first saw the trailer. I think The Rock has become a pretty great actor and I am a huge fan of adventures like this one. The journey through the Amazon River is sure to have tons of exciting moments. This will probably be one of the first ones on this list that I watch.
2. Ant-Man and the Wasp
As Scott Lang balances being both a superhero and a father, Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym present an urgent new mission that finds the Ant-Man fighting alongside The Wasp to uncover secrets from their past. Source
Ant-Man is one of the Marvel heroes that I often forget about. I like Paul Rudd, but he is not the typical badass hero and his skills are mainly in the comedic department. I'm honestly not sure if I have watched this one yet or not. I guess I will find out if I remember seeing this movie when I start it up, I know that I have at least watched the first Ant-Man movie.
3. Black Widow
Natasha Romanoff confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Source
I'm not a huge fan of Scarlett Johansson or Black Widow. Even without there being much hype behind this movie for me, I still am confident that it is probably pretty good. Basically, every Marvel movie that I have ever watched ended up being at least decent, if not amazing. Maybe this film will make me more of a fan of Black Widow.
4. WandaVision
Blends the style of classic sitcoms with the MCU, in which Wanda Maximoff and Vision - two super-powered beings living their ideal suburban lives - begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems. Source
Much of WanVision is filmed in black and white in front of a live studio audience. This one calls back to the old style of tv shows and it may or may not be something I will enjoy. I like the idea of superheroes trying to live regular lives, but I'm not sure if I like Vision enough to love this show. I will eventually get around to watching this probably, but I'd say it is at the bottom of this list of 12, at least for me.
5. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier
Following the events of 'Avengers: Endgame,' Sam Wilson/Falcon and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier team up in a global adventure that tests their abilities -- and their patience. Source
Here we go, two Marvel characters that are both pretty cool. The Falcon is a cool character portrayed by the man Anthony Mackie. I believe he becomes Captain America in this show, but I don't know a ton about the plot. I thought that Winter Soldier was a villain, but I guess they end up teaming up for some reason. I have some confidence that this will be one of the better shows on this list.
6. Loki
The mercurial villain Loki resumes his role as the God of Mischief in a new series that takes place after the events of “Avengers: Endgame.” Source
Loki was never a character that I loved in the Thor movies. I don't think he is painfully boring, he just never looked as scary as he acted. Hopefully, this show will get me more in tune with Loki as a strong Marvel villain. I like to be mischievous, so I may be more like Loki than I know at present time.
7. Hawkeye
Series based on the Marvel Comics superhero Hawkeye, centering on the adventures of Young Avenger, Kate Bishop, who took on the role after the original Avenger, Clint Barton. Source
Hawkeye ranks right around the same level of fandom for me as Black Widow. I do think that using the bow as a primary weapon is kind of cool. The Hawkeye that we are used to will be training his replacement in this series.
8. Raya and The Last Dragon
In a realm known as Kumandra, a re-imagined Earth inhabited by an ancient civilization, a warrior named Raya is determined to find the last dragon. Source
I am not huge on animated films, but I know there are some that are just too good to miss. Raya seems to be one of those characters that I just have to meet. I love how Southeast Asia is finally getting their own Disney princess of sorts. I look forward to learning more about the culture and seeing some cool animated action.
9. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
Shang-Chi, the master of weaponry-based Kung Fu, is forced to confront his past after being drawn into the Ten Rings organization. Source
I briefly watched the first five minutes of this movie a few months back but ended up turning it off since it was bad picture quality off some random streaming website. I know that Shang-Chi is going to be something that I really enjoy. I have heard many great things about this movie and know for a fact that I can enjoy a well-done kung-fu film.
10. The Mandalorian
The travels of a lone bounty hunter in the outer reaches of the galaxy, far from the authority of the New Republic. Source
This is the only show on this list that I actually have any prior experience with. I loved Season 1 of Mando, but lost access to my Disney+ and never got to start Season 2. I have heard that the finale of Season 2 ties into the beginning of The Book of Boba Feet, which is another show that you will see later on this list. Plus, who doesn't love a cute little baby Yoda-looking thing?
11. Eternals
The saga of the Eternals, a race of immortal beings who lived on Earth and shaped its history and civilizations. Source
This looks like an epic Marvel movie. I have no clue who the Eternals are, but the cast is packed with unique-looking characters. I'm a big fan of Kumail Nanjiani and he got absolutely jacked for his role of Kingo in this one. I have a feeling this will most likely be the strongest film on this entire list.
12. The Book of Boba Fett
Bounty hunter Boba Fett & mercenary Fennec Shand navigate the underworld when they return to Tatooine to claim Jabba the Hutt's old turf. Source
Last but not least is Boba Fett. I have always thought that he was the most dangerous bounty hunter in all of Star Wars. Even more so than Jango Fett, who just happens to be both his father and identical clone. As I mentioned before, this show ties into The Mandalorian. I'm not sure if I will finish Mando first or just go ahead and start Boba and then go back for Season 2 of Mando. Time will tell, but I plan on seeing what both have to offer.
What is on your watchlist❓
That does it for my personal opinion of what are the best dozen movies and tv shows on Disney+. Do you think that my list looks good? I know there are some other awesome films and shows, but these are just the ones that I have yet to see.
Leave a comment below if you think there is anything else that is a must-see on Disney+.
