Without planning it a few days ago I finished watching the second season of Vikings Valhalla and it was exactly a year ago when I saw the first season, and it is not that the second season was released around this time, it was actually in January this year, but it was not until now that I could see it, so I had to put myself in context to remember what happened long ago and give continuity to the story, so first let me also give you a little context.
Sin planificarlo hace pocos días finalice de ver la segunda temporada de Vikings Valhalla y fue exactamente hace un año cuando vi la primera temporada, y no es que la segunda se haya estrenado en estas fechas, realmente fue en el mes de enero del presente año, pero no fue hasta ahora que pude verla, así que tuve que ponerme yo mismo en contexto para recordar lo acontecido hace tiempo y darle continuidad a la historia, así que primero permítanme darles también un poco de contexto.
Context
It is common that when we watch this series we immediately relate it with Vikingos that originally premiered on History channel in 2013, and it is not wrong to relate them because the current one is a spin off of the first one that ended a few years ago after 6 successful seasons. If you saw the series Vikings and want to keep chronological relation with this one, it is not bad because even at the beginning of the first season there is a small summary of what happened and then it does not place 100 years after the stories of Ragnar Lothbrok, Bjorn Ironside, Lagertha and Ivar the Boneless.
Contexto
Es común que al ver esta serie de inmediato la relacionemos con la de Vikingos que originalmente se estrenó en History channel en 2013, y no está mal relacionarlas porque la actual es un spin off de la primera que terminó hace algunos años tras unas exitosas 6 temporadas. Si viste la serie Vikingos y quieres mantener relación cronológica con esta, no esta mal porque incluso al iniciar la primera temporada se da un pequeño resumen de lo ocurrido y luego no ubica 100 años después de los relato de Ragnar Lothbrok, Bjorn Ironside, Lagertha y Ivar el Deshuesado.
La historia cuenta sobre los esfuerzos de lo vikingos por establecerse en tierras sajonas, en búsqueda de mejores tierras para cultivar y crecer, en medio de un choque cultural debido a la creencia en los Dioses paganos vikingos y la cristianización de dicho pueblo provocando disputas entre ellos. Esto provocó una masacre entre los vikingos por parte de los ingleses, que hoy en día se conoce como la masacre del dia de San Brice,hecho que despertó la furia de los daneses y noruegos, los principales pueblos de tradición vikinga que se juntaron para impartir venganza con un gran ejército de la manos de Canuto rey de Dinamarca
The story tells of the efforts of the Vikings to settle in Saxon lands, in search of better lands to cultivate and grow, in the midst of a cultural clash due to the belief in the pagan Viking Gods and the Christianization of these people causing disputes between them. La gran batalla por la venganza se da, pero este hecho solo escondía las verdaderas intenciones expansionistas del Rey Canuto de dinamarca de hacerse con el reino de Inglaterra, dejando a un lado las ambiciones de muchos otros como la de Harald Hardrada por gobernar Noruega. Aquí es donde empiezan los juegos de trono, disfrazados por el hecho de cristianizar a los vikingos paganos, pero el final todo es hambre por el poder.
Final first season mind-blowing - second season disappointing
Leif Erickson and his sister Freydís the Greenlanders who take center stage in the series at the end take a position of power that leaves you wanting to keep watching and find out what will happen to them. The first season ends with a great battle for one of the most important Viking cities, with a display of combat, strategy and drama good enough to keep you entertained.
We see how some secondary characters linked to the main characters die to give more drama to the series, this happens with Leif when the woman he loves dies in combat, which awakens in him an almost invincible warrior, instilling fear among his enemies. Freydís faces at the end an antagonist who seemed invincible, but he takes the caste of a heroine and emerges as a strong character for the story to come, this way you finish a first season satisfied and eager for more.
Final primera temporada alucinante - segunda temporada decepcionante
Leif Erickson y su hermana Freydís los groenlandeses que toman el protagonismo de la serie al final toman una posición de poder que te deja con ganas de seguir viendo y saber qué les ocurrirá. La primera temporada termina con una gran batalla por una de las ciudades mas importantes vikingas, con un despliegue de combate, estrategia y drama lo suficientemente buenos para mantenerte entretenidos.
Vemos como algunos personajes secundarios ligados a los protagonistas fallecen para otorgar mas drama a la serie, esto ocurre con Leif cuando la mujer que ama muere en combate, lo que despierta en él a un guerrero casi que invencible, infundiendo temor entre sus enemigos. Freydís se enfrenta al final a un antagonista que parecía invencible, pero saca la casta de una heroína y se perfila como un personaje fuerte para la historia por venir, de esta forma terminas una primera temporada satisfecho deseoso de mas.
Leif Erickson blinded by revenge
Although the first season entertained me I must make it clear that it will never have the level of even the worst season of the first series of Vikings, but at least the main characters as I said are well developed, contrary to the second season with a script in my opinion very basic, with characters that seem somewhat silly and stories that do not provide at least some twist that surprises and keeps you hooked.
To give an example, we see Leif as an invincible Viking with a thirst for revenge, chasing the enemy and finishing with him in an incredible combat way, and the next chapter suddenly appeased making a trip to Constantinople with a new love but with super boring dialogues and without any combat scene, suddenly the fierce lion becomes a lamb, which is not bad, but there is no explanation or reason.
A pesar que la primera temporada me entretuvo debo dejar en claro que jamás tendrá el nivel de ni de la peor temporada de la primera serie de vikingos, pero por lo menos los personajes principales como les decia estan bien desarrollos, caso contrario a la segunda temporada con un libreto a mi parecer muy básico, con personaje que parecen algo tontos e historias que no proporcionan por lo menos algún giro que sorprenda y mantenga enganchado.
Para poner un ejemplo, vemos a Leif en vikingo invencible con sed de venganza, persiguiendo al enemigo y terminando con el de una forma de combate increible, y al siguiente capítulo apaciguado de repente haciendo un viaje a constantinopla con un nuevo amor pero con diálogos super aburridos y sin alguna escena de combate, de repente el fiero león se convierte en un cordero, lo cual no está mal, pero no hay una explicación ni razón.
Leif's character lost strength
In a Viking series you expect to see battles, it's what these people do best, win a fight and take the treasure with the right to brag about your exploits and be recognized for the great warrior you are. In this second season the battles are really mediocre, except for the final fight of Freydís with one of the characters that you hate the most from the first season, but this fight scene that is the best doesn't happen until the last chapter of the end of the season.
En una serie de vikingos esperas ver batallas, es lo que mejor sabe hacer esta gente, ganar un combate y llevarse el tesoro con el derecho de poder alardear tus hazañas y ser reconocido por el gran guerrero que eres. En esta segunda temporada las batallas son realmente mediocres, a excepción del combate final de Freydís con uno de los personajes que mas llegas a odiar desde la primera temporada, pero esta escena de pelea que es la mejor no ocurre sino hasta el ultimo capítulo del final de la temporada.

In this second season I expected a better development of Leif's character, because in the story it is told that he was the first Viking to set foot on American soil, something transcendental in history, and whoever knows this imagines that they will give a great protagonism to the character, but we see him serving the others all the time, he is the great second character that does not seem to have a clear direction in the series, he really seems to fill in the plot and that really disappointed me a little.
For a moment when I saw that the stories of the main characters were not as dense as in the first season, I focused on the new characters and the truth is that I really liked their stories, for example the scholar Arab woman who was willing to share her knowledge with the Viking Leif, both she and others carry very good stories but in the end you end up disappointed because they only remain in the series for this season.
En esta segunda temporada esperaba un mejor desarrollo del personaje de Leif, porque en la historia se cuenta que fue el primer vikingo en pisar suelo americano, algo transcendental en la historia, y quien sepa esto imagina que le darán un gran protagonismo al personaje, pero le vemos sirviendo a los demás todo em tiempo, es el gran segundón que no parece tener un rumbo claro en la serie, parece realmente relleno en la trama y eso la verdad me decepciono un poco.
Por instantes al ver que las historias de los personajes principales no eran tan densas como en la primera temporada, me enfoque en los nuevos personajes y la verdad que sus historias me gustaron mucho, por ejemplo de la una mujer árabe erudita que estaba dispuesta a compartir su conocimiento con el vikingo Leif, tanto ella como otros acarrean historias muy buenas pero al final terminas decepcionado porque solo permanecen en la serie por esta temporada.
Good but not lasting secondary characters
But not everything in the series is bad, photography is one of its strengths, the scenarios where the series takes place are real, no green screen, the landscapes are imposing and worthy of those Nordic countries, plus some scenes with gray tones that are very good and give a touch of mysticism. Also the soundtrack is quite good, it can be appreciated especially in the few action scenes, it sounds good enough and helps you get into what is happening.
Pero no todo en la serie es malo, la fotografía es uno de sus puntos fuertes, los escenarios donde se desarrolla la serie son reales, nada de pantalla verde, los paisajes son imponentes y dignos de esos paises nórdicos, además de algunas escenas con tonos grises que son muy buenas y le dan toque de misticismo. También la banda sonora es bastante buena, se puede apreciar en especial en las pocas escenas de acción suena lo bastante bien y te ayuda adentrarte en lo que ocurre.
The throne game for England is very good
Another aspect that I really liked, was the pretension of the throne of England that some characters have but do not say it openly in the series but one as a viewer can sense it, and how little by little seems to unveil a plan through a series of events that seemed natural, but are part of a twisted plan, meticulous and very studied to perfection, which reminds me of Game of Thrones in its best seasons.
Otro aspecto que si me gusto mucho, fue la pretensión del trono de Inglaterra que tienen algunos personajes pero que no lo dicen abiertamente en la serie pero uno como espectador puede intuirlo, y como poco a poco parece develarse un plan a través de una serie de acontecimientos que parecían algo natural, pero que son parte de un plan retorcido, minuciosos y muy estudiado a la perfeccion, que me hace recordar a juego de tronos en sus mejores temporadas.
