Main names associated with this film
Before watching this film I was pretty sure I had already seen it several years ago. This is a film from 2007 so this was highly likely, especially given the popularity of its 2 main actors. However, since I didn't remember almost anything about the story and I was in the mood for a good film full of drama and crime, I decided to rewatch it.
The 2 main actors are Ethan Hawke and the already deceased Philip Seymour Hoffman. Both of them have participated in a lot of well-known films and most people that watch movies regularly will surely recognize them both.
For such a good film I was surprised to notice its director, Sidney Lumet, was unknown, at least for me. It turns out, this guy was a very prominent director since the 50s! This film was the last one directed by him and the list of his previous works is one of the most extensive I have seen.

What is the film all about?
The 2 main characters are brothers, one of them is clearly older and he is the one who usually takes charge of the situation. Both of them are going through a rough financial situation and are getting more and more desperate as the days go by. They seem to have a dysfunctional family too. They have wealthy parents, or at least, very well-off but they never ask for a little financial help from them. Instead of doing that, they prefer to take an extremely risky and immoral decision, to rob their parent's jewelry store.
It seemed like a practical idea for them in the beginning, they know the place, they have worked there in the past, and they have the necessary contacts to sell jewels without getting caught. The only problem is this is their parent's store, which clearly affects the younger brother, not so much the older one, who is the one who planned everything.
These 2 guys aren't experienced criminals. They have never committed violent robberies, and this is the first time they are planning to do something like this. This is a drama film, so unsurprisingly their plan doesn't go the way they wanted. Everything will get extremely complicated, and their worst nightmares will eventually become true.
The film isn't presented in chronological order, it presents the series of events from the point of view of a particular character, and then reverses it back to present the same timeline but from the point of view of another character. The film does this several times but by the end of it, all the points of view are joined together.

Los 2 personajes principales son hermanos, uno de ellos es claramente mayor y es quien habitualmente se hace cargo de la situación. Ambos atraviesan una difícil situación financiera y se vuelven cada vez más desesperados a medida que pasan los días. También parecen tener una familia disfuncional. Tienen padres adinerados, o al menos muy acomodados, pero nunca les piden un poco de ayuda económica. En lugar de hacer eso, prefieren tomar una decisión extremadamente arriesgada e inmoral, robar la joyería de sus padres.
Al principio les pareció una idea práctica, conocen el lugar, han trabajado allí en el pasado y tienen los contactos necesarios para vender joyas sin que los atrapen. El único problema es que esta es la tienda de sus padres, lo que claramente afecta al hermano menor, no tanto al mayor, que es quien planificó todo.
Estos 2 tipos no son criminales experimentados. Nunca han cometido robos violentos y esta es la primera vez que planean hacer algo así. Esta es una película dramática, por lo que, como era de esperar, su plan no sale como querían. Todo se volverá extremadamente complicado y sus peores pesadillas eventualmente se harán realidad.
La película no se presenta en orden cronológico, presenta la serie de eventos desde el punto de vista de un personaje en particular, y luego la revierte para presentar la misma línea de tiempo pero desde el punto de vista de otro personaje. La película hace esto varias veces pero al final, todos los puntos de vista se unen.

How was the performance from the cast?
I especially enjoyed the performance from Philip Seymour Hoffman, he has this fluid way of showing intense emotions, his entire character felt authentic at all times, and it was cool to see him managing the difficult circumstances his character was forced to face. This guy made the drama felt real. Ethan Hawke's performance was also good of course and the chemistry between these 2 was palpable throughout the entire movie. Hawke's character portrayed fear and stress and not anger and frustration like Hoffman's character. This is why I was more impressed by the latter one.
The rest of the cast did a good job as well. The actress Marisa Tomei played her character quite well, and the same can be said about Michael Shannon who played a very intimidating thug, although he only appeared in 2 scenes he had this sinister look portrayed very well by the actor.
Final thoughts
This was a great crime-drama film, with a well-written plot, an excellent cast, and good performances all across the board. I would have preferred to see more background information related to the brothers' relationship with their parents. It was puzzling to see them making plans to rob their parent's store, instead of asking them for money. The store is part of their inheritance so running this risk didn't seem like the wisest choice. However, there might have been good reasons that explain this decision.
I would recommend this movie to anyone in the mood for a good crime-drama film, and if you are a fan of either of the 2 main actors make sure to watch this film as well. It is certainly one of their best jobs, although to be honest their performances have always been top-notch in every film they have participated in, so it isn't surprising to see them playing their character perfectly.
¿Cómo fue la actuación del elenco?
Disfruté especialmente la actuación de Philip Seymour Hoffman, tiene esta forma fluida de mostrar emociones intensas, todo su personaje se sintió auténtico en todo momento, y fue genial verlo manejando las difíciles circunstancias que su personaje se vio obligado a enfrentar. Este tipo hizo que el drama se sintiera real. La actuación de Ethan Hawke también fue buena, por supuesto, y la química entre estos dos fue palpable durante toda la película. El personaje de Hawke retrata el miedo y el estrés y no la ira y la frustración como el personaje de Hoffman. Por eso me impresionó más este último.
El resto del elenco también hizo un buen trabajo. La actriz Marisa Tomei interpretó bastante bien a su personaje, y lo mismo se puede decir de Michael Shannon quien interpretó a un matón muy intimidante, aunque solo estuvo en 2 escenas tenía esta mirada siniestra muy bien retratada por el actor.
Reflexiones finales
Esta fue una gran película de drama criminal, con una trama bien escrita, un elenco excelente y buenas actuaciones en todos los ámbitos. Hubiera preferido ver más información relacionada con la relación de los hermanos con sus padres. Fue desconcertante verlos haciendo planes para robar la tienda de sus padres, en lugar de pedirles dinero. La tienda es parte de su herencia, por lo que correr este riesgo no parecía la opción más inteligente. Sin embargo, puede haber buenas razones que expliquen esta decisión.
Recomendaría esta película a cualquiera que esté de humor para una buena película de drama criminal, y si eres fanático de cualquiera de los 2 actores principales, asegúrate de ver esta película también. Sin duda, es uno de sus mejores trabajos, aunque para ser honesto, sus actuaciones siempre han sido de primera categoría en todas las películas en las que han participado, por lo que no es sorprendente verlos interpretando a su personaje a la perfección.
