What was the series about?

Castlevania is an animated series released by Netflix in 2017 and in the beginning it had Dracula as one of its main characters. The series is based on a videogame of the same but since I never played that videogame I am unable to compare them.

At the beginning of the story, we learn that Dracula lost his wife because some local people thought she was a dangerous witch when in reality, she was just a good woman who happens to have fallen in love with the most powerful vampire on Earth.

This sadness will make Dracula do some brutal things, we will really see how capable he is of causing destruction and how evil he can be when he's mad. However, Dracula is only an important character during the first 2 seasons.

Besides Dracula, there are many other vampires, a few of them with their own ambitions and agendas, there are sorcerers, magicians, monster hunters, all sort of night creatures, and a half-human half-vampire guy who is the son of Dracula called Alucard. In order to review some of the events of season 4, I believe it is useful to first mention some of the important characters.

Castlevania es una serie animada lanzada por Netflix en 2017 y en un principio tenía a Drácula como uno de sus personajes principales. La serie está basada en un videojuego del mismo pero como nunca jugué ese videojuego no puedo compararlos.

Al comienzo de la historia, nos enteramos de que Drácula perdió a su esposa porque algunos lugareños pensaron que era una bruja peligrosa cuando en realidad, era solo una buena mujer que se enamoró del vampiro más poderoso de la Tierra.

Esta tristeza hizo que Drácula hiciera cosas brutales, y realmente pudimos ver cuán capaz es de causar destrucción y cuán malvado puede ser cuando está enojado. Sin embargo, Drácula es solo un personaje importante durante las primeras 2 temporadas.

Además de Drácula, hay muchos otros vampiros, algunos de ellos con sus propias ambiciones y agendas, hay hechiceros, magos, cazadores de monstruos, todo tipo de criaturas nocturnas y un tipo mitad humano mitad vampiro que es el hijo de Drácula, llamado Alucard. Para repasar algunos de los eventos de la temporada 4, creo que es útil mencionar primero algunos de los personajes importantes.

Main characters in season 4

Trevor Belmont: He is the main character, a monster hunter, and certainly the best human fighter. He is one of the good guys and is always using his skills to neutralize hostile beings. His family has been experts at killing monsters since generations ago, however, in the series he is the last one alive.

Sypha Belnades: She partners up with Trevor at the beginning of the series and they end up making a great fighting duo. She is a sorceress and can use the elements to combat all sorts of enemies. Her powers are extremely useful and are complemented by the presence of such a good warrior like Trevor. These 2 are going to have a lot of journeys together.

Alucard: he is the half-vampire half-human son of Dracula. He is extremely powerful, in fact, he is one of the most powerful characters in the entire series. He is wakened up from a long dream in a previous season by Trevor and Sypha, and they joined forces for a while but end up parting ways at the end of season 3.

Carmilla: she is a vampiress and just by looking at her it is clear she isn't very gentle and empathic with other beings. She is the most important vampire who wasn't happy with Dracula in previous seasons and now she has her own plans for total control. In season 4 she is the first villain.

Hector: he is a human who worked with Dracula. He is a forgemaster which means he is able to bring back to life dead souls in the form of ugly night creatures. This ability allows him to raise armies that can serve his interests. He seems important but in the previous 2 seasons, he has been at the mercy of Carmilla and his vampire sisters.

Héctor: es un humano que trabajó con Drácula. Es un maestro forjador, lo que significa que es capaz de resucitar almas muertas en forma de horribles criaturas nocturnas. Isaac: he was the other forgemaster that worked with Dracula in previous seasons. He has been using his abilities to improve some places he has visited as he recovers his strength and makes new plans to neutralize bigger threats. He will be very important in season 4 and one of the best fighting scenes has him as one of the 2 main participants.

Isaac: fue el otro maestro forjador que trabajó con Drácula en temporadas anteriores. Ha estado usando sus habilidades para mejorar algunos lugares que ha visitado a medida que recupera su fuerza y hace nuevos planes para neutralizar amenazas mayores. Saint Germain: the background info about this character is that he lost the love of his life in a supernatural place called the Infinite Corridor, and he has been trying to figure out how to control this place so he can recover her loved one. He is willing to do anything it takes to achieve this, and that's why he will cause a lot of crazy events in both seasons 3 and season 4.

There is another major character that is introduced in season 4 but I prefer not to mention him because it can be considered a surprise. All the characters I just mentioned were introduced in previous seasons and all of them play major roles in season 4.

What was season 4 about?

Throughout this season, we will see major events affecting all of the characters. We will see Trevor and Sypha participating in big battles and helping villages as they go around exploring the world. As I mentioned before, they make a great duo so defeating them has proved to be almost impossible. Alucard ended season 3 all grumpy and lonely but this will change in season 4. He won't become anything similar to his father and will in fact be a force for good in the world.

Carmilla got back to her castle with her sisters at the beginning of season 3, and she has been planning to take over the world and become the most powerful being in existence. This is obviously a threat to other major characters so conflicts and fights are guaranteed.

Hector has been working for Carmilla for a good while and this season will show he also has made some plans on his own. He is a very skilled forgemaster and has a lot of esoteric knowledge that can be very useful when it comes to planning attacks.

Isaac has always been very loyal to Dracula. He hates humankind even though he is a human because of the traumatic experiences he suffered in the past. However, he begins to learn and change his views during season 3 and this makes itself obvious in season 4. He is extremely talented in the fighting ground and the fact he can raise his own army makes him a tough contender.

Finally, we have the events related to Saint Germain. He knows a lot about alchemy and his capabilities have been a bit of a mystery since season 3. He will be the one that triggers the events that result in the most important battle of all season 4. He is not a warrior but only someone with a lot of knowledge.

A lo largo de esta temporada, veremos eventos importantes que afectarán a todos los personajes. Veremos a Trevor y Sypha participando en grandes batallas y ayudando a las aldeas mientras exploran el mundo. Como mencioné antes, forman un gran dúo, por lo que derrotarlos ha demostrado ser casi imposible. Alucard terminó la temporada 3 completamente gruñón y solo, pero esto cambiará en la temporada 4. No se convertirá en nada similar a su padre y, de hecho, será una fuerza para el bien en el mundo.

How were the animation and the action scenes?

This show has had top-notch animation since the beginning. The creativity when it comes to new monster designs is surprising and the action scenes has been always great. However, my favorite battle is still one in season 3 when Isaac fights against a magician that controlled an entire city. Season 4 is full of action scenes, and in this case, there are 2 great fighting scenes, 1 against each of the villains that are the best of the entire season.

Final thoughts

Castlevania was a great animated series to watch, with charismatic characters, great dialogues including a little bit of humor, and excellent action scenes that can easily be considered as among the best of the genre.

The series had a happy ending, and I am intrigued to know which new animated series Netflix will produce to satisfy its subscribers that love this type of content. I am happy to see this series wasn't overmilked, it had a proper plot with a lot of changes throughout the seasons and eventually, everything in the story got sorted out.

¿Cómo fueron la animación y las escenas de acción?

Este programa ha tenido una animación de primer nivel desde el principio. La creatividad cuando se trata de nuevos diseños de monstruos es sorprendente y las escenas de acción siempre han sido geniales. Sin embargo, mi batalla favorita sigue siendo una en la temporada 3 cuando Isaac lucha contra un mago que controlaba una ciudad entera. La temporada 4 está llena de escenas de acción, y en este caso, hay 2 grandes escenas de lucha, 1 contra cada uno de los villanos que son las mejores de toda la temporada.

Reflexiones finales

Castlevania fue una gran serie animada, con personajes carismáticos, grandes diálogos que incluyen un poco de humor y excelentes escenas de acción que pueden fácilmente considerarse entre las mejores del género.

La serie tuvo un final feliz y me intriga saber qué nueva serie animada producirá Netflix para satisfacer a sus suscriptores que aman este tipo de contenido. Estoy feliz de ver que esta serie no fue sobre extendida, tuvo una trama adecuada con muchos cambios a lo largo de las temporadas y, finalmente, todo en la historia se resolvió.
