The Conjuring is the most recent movie franchise dealing with classic horror topics such as demonic possessions, cursed objects, and things like that. These films inform the viewer the plots are based on the real-life experiences that Ed and Lorraine Warren had while working as paranormal investigators.
This is a topic that fascinated me when I was younger but I started to lose interest over the years. The existence of ghosts and demons was a terrifying thought for me on whereas now I really don't care much about that. It is not that I don't believe any of that is possible, it might be possible, I think there are a lot of unknown things in life and there might be types of energies we still don't understand, but the frightfulness isn't longer there which is good.
The Conjuring: the devil made me do it, is, as the name implies, a film about possessions. In horror, demonic possessions are certainly one of the most common types of stories and this is thanks to the classic film The Exorcist, which had some original and crazy scenes that gave nightmares to a lot of viewers back in those times, and even now that type of scenes is still being copied for new horror productions, they are simply too good to stop using them.
The Conjuring, despite the fact it is a worth watching film, doesn't bring anything new to the table as I will explain in the following paragraphs but first, I would like to mention the main names associated with this movie.
Main names associated with the film
Being a super production it is expected to have a lot of talent working in this movie. The 2 main characters, the Warren marriage, are played by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson. Farmiga is a well-known actress with major roles in a lot of productions, her main jobs have been in the horror-mystery genres, not only thanks to The Conjuring trilogy but also because of the Bates Motel series, where she plays one of the 2 main characters. Some other productions where she has played important roles are Closer to the Moon, The Judge, and Source Code.
Patrick Wilson is an actor that reached a high level of popularity in recent years thanks to the horror genre. He has participated in 2 great horror franchises of the past decade, one of them being The Conjuring of course, and the other one is Insidious. He has also participated in some good productions from other genres such as The Commuter, Aquaman, and one season of Fargo.
There was an actor who played a secondary role but I was able to recognize from the scifi series Fringe, I am talking about the actor John Noble. He always plays secondary roles and has been working mostly in series in the past few years.
The Conjuring es la franquicia de películas más reciente que trata sobre temas de terror clásicos como posesiones demoníacas, objetos malditos y cosas por el estilo. Estas películas informan al espectador que las tramas se basan en las experiencias de la vida real que Ed y Lorraine Warren tuvieron mientras trabajaban como investigadores paranormales.
Este es un tema que me fascinaba cuando era más joven pero comencé a perder interés con los años. La existencia de fantasmas y demonios era un pensamiento aterrador para mí, mientras que ahora realmente no me importa mucho eso. No es que no crea que nada de eso sea posible, podría ser posible, creo que hay muchas cosas desconocidas en la vida y puede haber tipos de energías que todavía no entendemos, pero ya no siento tanto espanto como antes lo cual es bueno.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, es, como su nombre lo indica, una película sobre posesiones. En el horror, las posesiones demoníacas son sin duda uno de los tipos de historias más comunes y esto es gracias a la película clásica El exorcista, que tuvo algunas escenas originales y locas que dieron pesadillas a muchos espectadores en aquellos tiempos, e incluso ahora ese tipo de escenas todavía son copiadas en nuevas producciones de terror, simplemente son demasiado buenas para dejar de usarlas.
The Conjuring, a pesar de que es una película que vale la pena ver, no trae nada nuevo a la mesa como explicaré en los siguientes párrafos, pero primero, me gustaría mencionar los nombres principales asociados con esta película.

Al ser una superproducción, se espera que haya mucho talento trabajando en esta película. Los 2 personajes principales, el matrimonio Warren, son interpretados por Vera Farmiga y Patrick Wilson. Farmiga es una conocida actriz con papeles importantes en muchas producciones, sus principales trabajos han sido en los géneros de terror y misterio, no solo gracias a la trilogía The Conjuring sino también por la serie Bates Motel, donde interpreta a uno de las 2 personajes principales. The director was Michael Chaves who hasn't really directed many great films in the past. The one that could be an exception was another horror film that happens in the same universe as The Conjuring called The Curse of la Llorona but it wasn't a great horror film, to be honest. That one and the recent The Conjuring movie are the only films directed by this person. His other works are some shorts and a failed series called Chase Champion. This makes one wonder why is this person directing horror super productions?
When it comes to the writers, the screenplay was written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick who has enough experience working as a writer. His first job was none other than for the film Orphan, which was an amazing horror-suspense film. He has also work in Aquaman and The Walking Dead.
The story was written also by David and by James Wan, the latter one has a lot of experience in the horror genre. He was the director of the first 2 films in both The Conjuring trilogy and the Insidious trilogy. In the second film of both trilogies, he also worked as part of the writing team. He has worked as a writer in many other productions such as the original Saw, Dead Silence, and other films that are related to the Conjuring such as the Nun and Anabelle comes home. He usually works in excellent horror productions so it is good to always check the projects he is working on.
What was the movie about?
The Conjuring presents the viewer with a new type of enemy that the Warren marriage will be forced to face. This marriage already has enough experience dealing with all sorts of paranormal phenomena, and in this film, they will encounter something entirely new to them.
The story begins with a little kid suffering from a possession and the Warren marriage helping the family deal with the situation while waiting for the priest to arrive. The beginning of the film has some good horror moments and it might make the viewer think this is going to be a hardcore film but the truth is, these moments are probably the most intense of the entire film.
While the exorcism is taking place, an older guy who is the boyfriend of the kid's sister, cannot stand to see the kid suffering so much and asks the demon to take him and leave the kid alone. This case is the one known as "the devil made me do it" in real life because it was the first time in history a person claimed to be innocent during a trial for reasons of demonic possession.
This family has suffered a lot, first it was the kid, then the boyfriend. No one understands why they are being targeted and it is up to the Warren marriage to figure out what's happening. In previous films, we learned that Lorraine Warren has the paranormal ability to perceive images when touching objects or people. It is only thanks to this ability that this marriage can do the type of investigation that they are famous for and I wonder if the real Lorraine was really able to do this. I don't think this was ever proved though.

La que podría ser una excepción fue otra película de terror que ocurre en el mismo universo que The Conjuring llamada La maldición de la Llorona pero no fue una gran película de terror, para ser honesto. Esa y la reciente película The Conjuring son las únicas películas dirigidas por esta persona. Sus otros trabajos son algunos cortos y una serie fallida llamada Chase Champion. Esto hace que uno se pregunte ¿por qué esta persona está dirigiendo superproducciones de terror?

¿De qué trataba la película?
The Conjuring presenta al espectador un nuevo tipo de enemigo que el matrimonio Warren se verá obligado a enfrentar. Este matrimonio ya tiene suficiente experiencia lidiando con todo tipo de fenómenos paranormales, y en esta película, encontrarán algo completamente nuevo para ellos.
La historia comienza con un niño pequeño que sufre una posesión y el matrimonio Warren ayudando a la familia a lidiar con la situación mientras esperan que llegue el sacerdote. El comienzo de la película tiene algunos buenos momentos de terror y puede hacer que el espectador piense que esta será una película hardcore, pero la verdad es que estos momentos son probablemente los más intensos de toda la película.
Mientras se lleva a cabo el exorcismo, un chico mayor que es el novio de la hermana del niño, no aguanta ver al niño sufrir tanto y le pide al demonio lo deje en paz y que lo tome a él. Este caso es el que se conoce como "el diablo me obligó a hacerlo" en la vida real porque era la primera vez en la historia que una persona afirmaba ser inocente durante un juicio por motivos de posesión demoníaca.
Esta familia ha sufrido mucho, primero fue el niño, luego el novio. Nadie entiende por qué están siendo acosados por cosas paranormales y depende del matrimonio de Warren averiguar qué está sucediendo. En películas anteriores, aprendimos que Lorraine Warren tiene la capacidad paranormal de percibir imágenes al tocar objetos o personas. Es solo gracias a esta habilidad que este matrimonio puede hacer el tipo de investigación por la que son famosos y me pregunto si la verdadera Lorraine era realmente capaz de hacer esto. Sin embargo, no creo que esto se haya probado nunca.
The character played by John Noble is key for the story. He is a retired priest and he has a lot of experience dealing with satanic things. He will have a lot of important things to say throughout the film.
The horror in this film was acceptable, there were some good and enjoyable moments but I don't consider this a hardcore horror film nor a very memorable horror production. It doesn't bring anything new to the table, and some scenes were really a copycat of classic scenes from The Exorcist.
How were the performance from the cast, the settings and the camera work?
The performance from the cast was good, although there were some moments when I didn't understand the decisions taken by some characters, the main example of this is when a police officer stands still while another character begins to run full force in the woods. The police officer instead of following them he just remains there looking at the ground. This didn't make sense.
When it comes to the settings, they were okayish although I didn't like the fact that the lighting in the film looked like if people used candles instead of normal lightbulbs. Their lightbulbs were extremely weak and provided a more than obvious setting for mysterious topics but it wasn't realistic because no one uses lightbulbs that weak. The camera work was regular, it wasn't really original but it wasn't entirely bad either.
Final thoughts
The movie is a good watch for fans of the genre, and certainly a must-watch for people who have followed The conjuring films so far. It is one of the best horror productions in recent months but this is mainly because there haven't been many new releases as of late. I believe the film could have been better but it is good enough to be an enjoyable watch.
The Conjuring is a horror franchise that I think can still give more content for new films so I wouldn't be surprised to see The Conjuring 4 a couple of years down the road. One thing I did enjoy is they included some real-life audio at the end of the film and it was interesting to hear the real sounds a so-called possessed person makes. The film isn't memorable but should be watched nonetheless.

El personaje interpretado por John Noble es clave para la historia. Es un sacerdote jubilado y tiene mucha experiencia lidiando con cosas satánicas. Tendrá muchas cosas importantes que decir a lo largo de la película.
El horror en esta película fue aceptable, hubo algunos momentos buenos y disfrutables, pero no considero que esta sea una película de terror hardcore ni una producción de terror muy memorable. No trae nada nuevo a la mesa, y algunas escenas eran realmente una imitación de escenas clásicas de El exorcista.
¿Cómo fue la actuación del elenco, la ambientación y el trabajo de cámara?
La actuación del elenco fue buena, aunque hubo algunos momentos en los que no entendí las decisiones tomadas por algunos personajes, el principal ejemplo de esto es cuando un oficial de policía se detiene mientras otro personaje comienza a correr con toda su fuerza en el bosque. El oficial de policía en lugar de seguirlos se queda mirando al suelo. Esto no tiene sentido.
Cuando se trata de la ambientación, estuvo más o menos acceptable aunque no me gustó el hecho de que la iluminación de la película se vea como si la gente usara velas en lugar de bombillas normales. Sus bombillas eran extremadamente débiles y proporcionaban un escenario más que obvio para temas misteriosos, pero no era realista porque nadie usa bombillas tan débiles. El trabajo de la cámara fue regular, no era realmente original pero tampoco del todo malo.
Reflexiones finales
La película es un buena para los fanáticos del género, y sin duda de visionado obligado para las personas que han seguido las películas de The Conjuring hasta ahora. Es una de las mejores producciones de terror de los últimos meses, pero esto se debe principalmente a que últimamente no ha habido muchos lanzamientos nuevos. Creo que la película podría haber sido mejore, pero fue lo suficientemente buena como para merecer verla.
The Conjuring es una franquicia de terror que creo que aún puede dar más contenido para nuevas películas, por lo que no me sorprendería ver The Conjuring 4 dentro de un par de años. Una cosa que disfruté es que incluyeron un audio de la vida real al final de la película y fue interesante escuchar los sonidos reales que hace una supuesta persona poseída. La película no es memorable, pero debería verse de todos modos.
