Main names associated with the series
If you have been watching horror movies from recent years, just a quick glimpse at the poster and promotional images of this series will make you think it was created by Jordan Peele. He has been both the director and writer of 2 awesome horror/suspense movies called Get Out and Us that I totally recommend watching if you enjoy those genres.
When I first knew about the Them series I thought it was another production from him, but that's not the case. He didn't participate in this series and I guess the creator, known as Little Marvin, only wanted to capitalize by using similar styles in the way the series is promoted. If you take a look at the second image in this post, you will notice it is similar to the poster of the movie Us. However, the plot and the way Them explores horror are very different than that of Jordan Peele's films.
Little Marvin is not a person with a lot of experience in this industry, and this is the second production where he works as a producer and the first one as a writer. What I can say about his writing is that he certainly likes to add a bit of sadism and cruelty to the story. However, I will explain more about this in the next section.
I was able to recognize 2 actresses in the whole cast, one of them was Shahadi Wright Joseph who was also one of the main actresses in the movie Us, and the other was Alison Pill because she also played an important role in the scifi series called Devs, which for me was a complete masterpiece. Alison does have an extensive list of previous works and is probably the member of the cast with the most experience. The main actor was Ashley Thomas but it was the first time I ever saw him on the screen and this is certainly the most important production he has participated in so far.
What was the series about?
Them is a series about both extreme racism as well as curses, evilness and witchery. The series follows a black family that are trying to improve their lives and move to an all white neighborhood during the 50s. Even when they are signing the paper work the wife notices a mention of "negro blood" and gets worried about it but both the husband and the person making the deal dismiss that as if it weren't important.
When they are arriving for the first time, they notice almost all of the people living on the street staring at them. This must be very uncomfortable to endure but no one stops staring at them and the black family simply tries to be as polite as possible.
The white people living on the street pretend to be polite as well at the beginning, but eventually, they are going to get very territorial and hostile, because they feel like their land is being taken away from them, and they also get worried their property values might go down.
There are paranormal elements in this story as well and I must say the family is very unlucky because there are so many random things that happen to them and all of them are very bad. The racism from the present obviously affects them almost on a daily basis, but racism isn't only present in today's people. I believe this is the first production to mix both racism and the paranormal to produce an original horror story.

¿De qué trataba la serie?
Them es una serie sobre racismo extremo, maldiciones, maldad y brujería. La serie sigue a una familia negra que está tratando de mejorar sus vidas y mudarse a un vecindario completamente blanco durante los años 50. Incluso cuando están firmando el papeleo, la esposa nota una mención de "sangre negra" y se preocupa por eso, pero tanto el esposo como la persona que hace el trato lo descartan como si no fuera importante.

In my view, the extreme hostility from the racist neighbours were as much and maybe even more scary than the paranormal events. There will be a lot of sadism and cruelty which I found distateful but I understood this was a big part of the story. I like movies about horror and suspense, but sadism is something I don't really enjoy watching. The film doesn't have gore, which is by the way, another thing I don't enjoy, but the sadism can be hard to swallow sometimes.
When it comes to the horror, it was nice and there were some moments that could be considered as scary although personally I didn't get scared watching this series. However, I did find it intriguing how the creator embedded both horror and psychological thriller into one story. In this series horror is paranormal but the consequences are psychological.
I found the end a bit simpler than I was expecting it to be, but the ending only solves one of the problems for the family, they still have another one to solve. I don't know how much paranormal horror the second season is going to have though. Maybe this will be an anthology series with different stories each season and different horror sources as well.
How were the performance from the cast, the settings and the camera work?
The cast did an excellent job in their roles, there was no weak performance from anyone, not even the little kid. The 2 main adult characters, played by Ashley Thomas and Deborah Ayorinde, were excellent in portraying the emotional state they are going through.
I loved how they revealed some of the small twists, especially one involving the character played by Shahadi Wright Joseph. The horror scenes were also cool but not hardcore enough. The only thing hardcore in this series were racism and a bit of sadism and cruelty.
In one of the first horror scenes of the show, the camera work was perfect to show a very scary silhouette. The horror series were usually cool but not always entirely original. The doubts and mystery regarding the paranormal is properly explained in episode 9, so viewers will have no many questions left unanswered. When it comes to the setting, they were perfect as well, really showing how things looked in the 50s.
Final thoughts
Them is a decent horror series but its excessive focus in racism, sadism and cruelty was a big turn off for me. Episode 5 has what is certainly the worst scene of all and most people will feel uncomfortable watching that one. That type of scene is the one I consider even more horrific than regular paranormal horror.
I liked the fact it provided cool horror elements with proper background, and I also enjoyed the way they revealed some twists as well as how they explored the consequences of all this craziness. All in all, Them is worth the watch but only if you are able to withstand seeing so much hostility towards an innocent family.
En mi opinión, la extrema hostilidad de los vecinos racistas fue tan y tal vez incluso más aterradora que los eventos paranormales. Habrá mucho sadismo y crueldad que encontré de poco gusto, pero entendí que esta era una gran parte de la historia. Me gustan las películas de terror y suspenso, pero el sadismo es algo que realmente no disfruto viendo. La película no tiene gore, que por cierto, es otra cosa que no disfruto, pero el sadismo a veces puede ser difícil de tragar.
En lo que respecta al horror, estuvo bien y hubo algunos momentos que podrían considerarse aterradores, aunque en lo personal no me asustaro mucho la verdad. Sin embargo, me pareció intrigante cómo el creador incorporó tanto el terror como el thriller psicológico en una historia. En esta serie el terror es paranormal pero las consecuencias son psicológicas.
Encontré el final un poco más simple de lo que esperaba, pero el final solo resuelve uno de los problemas de la familia, todavía tienen otro por resolver. Sin embargo, no sé cuánto horror paranormal tendrá la segunda temporada. Tal vez esta sea una serie de antología con diferentes historias en cada temporada y también diferentes fuentes de terror.
¿Cómo fue la actuación del elenco, la ambientación y el trabajo de cámara?
El elenco hizo un excelente trabajo en sus papeles, no hubo una actuación débil de nadie, ni siquiera del niño pequeño. Los 2 personajes adultos principales, interpretados por Ashley Thomas y Deborah Ayorinde, fueron excelentes al retratar el estado emocional por el que están pasando.
Me encantó cómo revelaron algunos de los pequeños giros argumentales, especialmente uno que involucra al personaje interpretado por Shahadi Wright Joseph. Las escenas de terror también estuvieron bien pero no lo suficientemente duras. Lo único duro de esta serie fue el racismo y un poco de sadismo y crueldad.
En una de las primeras escenas de terror del programa, el trabajo de cámara fue perfecto para mostrar una silueta muy aterradora. Las scenes de terror estuvieron bien generalmente, pero no siempre del todo originales. Las dudas y el misterio con respecto a lo paranormal se explican correctamente en el episodio 9, por lo que a los espectadores no les quedarán muchas preguntas sin respuesta. En lo que respecta a la ambientación, también estuvo buena, mostrando realmente cómo se veían las cosas en los años 50.
Reflexiones finales
Es una serie de terror decente, pero su enfoque excesivo en el racismo, el sadismo y la crueldad hizo que me gustara menos. El episodio 5 tiene la que es sin duda la peor escena de todas y la mayoría de la gente se sentirá incómoda al verla. Ese tipo de escena es la que considero incluso más horrible que el horror paranormal normal.
Me gustó el hecho de que proporcionaba elementos de terror geniales con un trasfondo adecuado, y también disfruté la forma en que revelaron algunos giros, así como la forma en que exploraron las consecuencias de toda esta locura. Con todo, vale la pena ver la serie, pero solo si eres capaz de soportar ver tanta hostilidad hacia una familia inocente.
