When I saw this series was being released the topic immediately took my attention and when I realized it was an Argentinian production that was another reason to give it a watch due to my good experience with them.
There weren't any cast members that I already knew from previous productions so I wasn't sure what to expect about this show. All I knew was that the plot was about a character named Yosi Perez, played by the actor Gustavo Bassani, who becomes a spy and infiltrates a Jewish community.
The story takes place during a very chaotic part of Argentina's history, there weren't many freedoms, society was very rotten and they were recovering from a recent dictatorship that was still palpable in some institutions from the government.
The government is completely radical, and it is full of people with antisemitic beliefs that think the Jewish people are going to take over parts of their country and take them away from Argentina in what would be some type of South American version of Israel. It was a very crazy and ludicrous plan but there were people from that era who believed in this stuff, and maybe even today there could be still people with these ideas too ashamed to express them publicly.
The decision to become a spy is life-changing for Yosi. He needs to begin a new life and that means leaving his old friends and family behind, and most painfully, his girlfriend. But he doesn't hesitate when asked about his willingness to do these sacrifices, he was certainly 100% committed to becoming a successful spy. This is surely not a job for overtly emotional people and the amount of psychological endurance required for this is mind-blowing.
He needs to pretty much become a Jew so he can properly integrate himself into Jewish social circles and make everyone believe he is one of them. It required a lot of study and effort to successfully portray himself as a Jew. He developed a whole new persona with ease as if he was born to do this type of job.
Cuando vi que se estaba estrenando esta serie el tema inmediatamente me llamó la atención y cuando me di cuenta de que era una producción argentina esa fue otra razón para darle un vistazo debido a mi buena experiencia con produciones argentinas.
No había ningún miembro del elenco que ya conociera de producciones anteriores, así que no estaba seguro de qué esperar de este programa. Todo lo que sabía era que la trama trataba sobre un personaje llamado Iosi Pérez, interpretado por el actor Gustavo Bassani, que se convierte en espía y se infiltra en una comunidad judía.
La historia transcurre durante una parte muy caótica de la historia argentina, no había muchas libertades, la sociedad estaba muy podrida y se estaban recuperando de una dictadura reciente que aún era palpable en algunas instituciones del gobierno.
El gobierno es completamente radical, y estaba lleno de personas con creencias antisemitas que piensan que el pueblo judío va a tomar partes de su país y quitárselas a Argentina en lo que sería algún tipo de versión sudamericana de Israel. Era un plan muy loco y ridículo, pero había personas de esa época que creían en estas cosas, y tal vez incluso hoy en día todavía podría haber personas con estas ideas demasiado avergonzadas para expresarlas públicamente.
La decisión de convertirse en espía le cambia la vida a Iosi. Necesita comenzar una nueva vida y eso significa dejar atrás a sus viejos amigos y familiares, y lo más doloroso, a su novia. Pero no duda cuando se le pregunta sobre su disposición a hacer estos sacrificios, ciertamente estaba 100% comprometido a convertirse en un espía exitoso. Este seguramente no es un trabajo para personas excesivamente emocionales y la cantidad de resistencia psicológica requerida para esto es alucinante.
Necesita convertirse en judío para poder integrarse adecuadamente en los círculos sociales judíos y hacer que todos crean que él es uno de ellos. Se requirió mucho estudio y esfuerzo para retratarse con éxito como judío. Desarrolló una persona completamente nueva con facilidad como si hubiera nacido para hacer este tipo de trabajo.
I have seen in other similar stories, that the infiltrated spy can end up developing certain liking and honest friendships among the people he or she is supposed to spy on. And it is understandable because spending so much time together naturally causes people to bond with their peers. This story isn't the exception to this.
Despite his many skills and smooth personality, he won't be able to avoid massive problems. It appears the Jewish society in Argentina during that time was very paranoid and had its doses of bad guys in charge of dealing with any potential threat.
Drastic measures are taken by both sides due to their paranoia of being outplayed by their rivals. With both sides, I mean the Jewish community, including their embassy, and the anti-Jewish people who have important political power and are worried because they believe some crazy conspiracies are true.
The series sometimes shows us scenes that take place years after a massive terrorist attack at Israel's embassy which ended up changing the lives of the main characters. Most of the story takes place before this moment, but in the scenes that take place after the attack, it is very clear that Yosi changed a lot after his time infiltrating the Jewish community.
The very name of the series already indicates this character ends up regretting his time as a spy, and those scenes leave it very clear. Seeing his past and future self was like seeing 2 opposites when it comes to ideological leanings.
I was expecting to slowly see in the scenes that take place in the past how his ideas and general psychology gradually changed as he learned more about the dangerous radicalism he was supporting.
He visto en otras historias similares, que el espía infiltrado puede terminar desarrollando cierto gusto y amistades honestas entre las personas a las que se supone que debe espiar. Y es comprensible porque pasar tanto tiempo juntos naturalmente hace que las personas se vinculen con sus compañeros. Esta historia no es la excepción a esto.
A pesar de sus muchas habilidades y personalidad suave, no podrá evitar problemas masivos. Parece que la sociedad judía en Argentina durante ese tiempo era muy paranoica y tenía su buena dosis de tipos malos a cargo de lidiar con cualquier amenaza potencial.
Ambas partes toman medidas drásticas debido a su paranoia de ser superadas por sus rivales. Con ambos lados, me refiero a la comunidad judía, incluida su embajada, y al pueblo antijudío que tiene un poder político importante y está preocupado porque creen que algunas conspiraciones locas son ciertas.
La serie a veces nos muestra escenas que tienen lugar años después de un ataque terrorista masivo en la embajada de Israel que terminó cambiando la vida de los personajes principales. La mayor parte de la historia tiene lugar antes de este momento, pero en las escenas que tienen lugar después del ataque, está muy claro que Iosi cambió mucho después de su tiempo infiltrándose en la comunidad judía.
El propio nombre de la serie ya indica que este personaje acaba arrepintiéndose de su paso por el espionaje, y esas escenas lo dejan muy claro. Ver su yo pasado y futuro fue como ver 2 opuestos cuando se trata de inclinaciones ideológicas.
Esperaba ver lentamente en las escenas que tienen lugar en el pasado cómo sus ideas y psicología general cambiaron gradualmente a medida que aprendía más sobre el peligroso radicalismo que estaba apoyando.
His infiltration can be nerve breaking at times, he sometimes has to deal with very unstable people and during those moments, his life is even at more risk than the usual.
On the other hand, he will also manage to have access to privileged information as well as opinions of prominent people that will either confirm or discard his antisemitic beliefs, and more tragically, this information could have been used to perpetrate a major terrorist attack, one of the worst ones in the history of the country.
There will be many examples of how political corruption erodes the integrity of society. Doing dirty payments to military people becomes the new normal, and everyone acts as if this was the most normal thing in the world. Influencing members of the military used their power to obtain dirty money and it seemed they were very proud of it. I believe this is the normal modus operandi of corrupt governments, because in Venezuela this has been happening since many years ago, and it still continues to happen even nowadays. Sadly, these problems aren't easy to solve.
Final thoughts
The series is intense, there weren't any boring episodes whatsoever, but something I do criticize is that it can get a bit tiresome to follow events from so many different years. I believe the series could have made a better job organizing its scenes in a more easy-to-digest way. However, I really like it and it can show all the dangerous things that can happen when extreme political beliefs take hold of public institutions and influential people in the government. The worst atrocities are always committed by the government, and I am not talking about this series but about life itself. There isn't a big risk to people's freedom and well-being than a government out of control and radicalized.
I believe the series had a proper ending, and even though the story could continue, I don't it is necessary. The message from this story was already delivered, and what happens after would be easy to figure out for most viewers.
I am happy to have decided to give this series a watch, if you are the type of person who enjoys stories about spies, or thrillers in general, I would say this series might be a good option to enjoy.
Su infiltración puede ser un mar de nervios a veces, tiene que lidiar con personas muy inestables y durante esos momentos, su vida está aún más en riesgo de lo habitual.
Por otro lado, también logrará tener acceso a información privilegiada, así como a opiniones de personas prominentes que confirmarán o descartarán sus creencias antisemitas, y lo que es más trágico, esta información podría haber sido utilizada para perpetrar un gran ataque terrorista, uno de los peores en la historia del país.
Habrá muchos ejemplos de cómo la corrupción política erosiona la integridad de la sociedad. Hacer pagos sucios a los militares se convierte en la nueva normalidad, y todos actúan como si esto fuera lo más normal del mundo. Los miembros influyentes de los militares usan su poder para obtener dinero sucio y parecía que estaban muy orgullosos de ello. Creo que este es el modus operandi normal de los gobiernos corruptos, porque en Venezuela esto ha estado sucediendo desde hace muchos años, y todavía sigue sucediendo incluso hoy en día. Lamentablemente, estos problemas no son fáciles de resolver.
Reflexiones finales
La serie es intensa, no hubo episodios aburridos en absoluto pero algo que sí critico es que puede ser un poco tedioso seguir eventos de tantos años diferentes. Creo que la serie podría haber hecho un mejor trabajo organizando sus escenas de una manera más fácil de digerir. Sin embargo, me gusto mucho y puede mostrar todas las cosas peligrosas que pueden suceder cuando las creencias políticas extremas se apoderan de las instituciones públicas y de las personas influyentes en el gobierno. Las peores atrocidades siempre las comete el gobierno, y no estoy hablando de esta serie sino de la vida misma. No hay un mayor riesgo para la libertad y el bienestar de las personas que un gobierno fuera de control y radicalizado.
Creo que la serie tuvo un final adecuado, y aunque la historia podría continuar, no es necesario. El mensaje de esta historia ya fue entregado, y lo que sucede después sería fácil de imaginar para la mayoría de los espectadores.
Estoy feliz de haber decidido darle un vistazo a esta serie, si eres el tipo de persona que disfruta de las historias sobre espías, o thrillers en general, diría que esta serie podría ser una buena opción para disfrutar.
