I am not normally into Horror-themed films, but this movie caught my attention because of its look. The show is about the effects of The Bloom, a plant with a mysterious power on the world. Rather than one story, it's a series of short stories centered around the effects of The Bloom. The Guardian had let spores of The Bloom spread to the world below by mistake, and he is hearing the stories of what happened from Tzod, as well as sharing a story of his own before becoming the current guardian of The Bloom. For anyone going in to watch this, there is a lot of nudity in this movie. No sex, but since I won't be showing the nudity here I do think it's important to let everyone know before going in just in case something like that will turn you off of the movie.
The first thing I want to note is, by and large, the visuals in this show are fantastic. The entire show is done with Rotoscope, and the style of animation does wonders for the dark imagery the show makes use of. The blood and gore look amazing, and the magical effects do feel supernatural. The only real problem is the action itself, when it happens, can feel a bit stiff and unnatural. I won't go into more detail than that as far as the images, but the visuals are the best part of this movie.
When discussing the actual story, it's not the most interesting thing out there. A lot of the characters are fairly one-note, and they aren't given a lot of time to start to feel like characters. They all hit that one note well, but I don't feel anyone has been given enough screen time to get that invested in.
Where the show can start to let you down is the voice acting is all over the place in terms of quality. Tzod and The Guardian are both amazing in their roles, for example. And I don't want to say he was strictly bad, but Patton Oswalt as Lord Pyrantin sounded out of place. And that is what half of the characters in the movie sound like, out of place. He may be the worst example of this, but it does make it hard to immerse yourself whenever half the cast is speaking.
On one hand, if you look past the visuals there isn't much here to grab you. On the other hand, I think the visuals are good enough to warrant watching purely on their merit. Every scene looks wonderful, there are so many good shots and visual effects, and the voice acting is never so distracting that it can entirely ruin what you are looking at. I know this isn't the most detailed review, but I don't feel like the show has much to offer, and what it does have to offer you can get from a trailer or screenshots. If this art design catches your eye, I say you are going to get something out of this movie. If it doesn't, there isn't going to be much else in this movie that warrants watching it. Personally, I really enjoyed it.
