Buenas, Hivers. ¿Qué onda? Espero que les vaya de maravilla. Ya estamos entrando de nuevo en la temporada de los Oscars. Hay muchas películas que están dando muchísimo de qué hablar. En el pasado, generalmente, yo solía reseñar todas las películas nominadas a la categoría de "Mejor Película", irónicamente, en este caso, pienso reseñar una película que ha estado en boca de muchos. Una película, que es de esas que siempre dejan por fuera en las nominaciones, pero sabes bien que la merece. En este caso, voy a hablar del debut filmográfico de Fernando Frías: "Ya no estoy aquí". Aviso de antemano que esta reseña contiene spoilers.
Hey, Hivers, what's up? I hope you're doing great. We're getting back into Oscar season. There are a lot of movies that are getting a lot of buzz. In the past, I usually reviewed all the films nominated for "Best Picture", ironically, in this case, I plan to review a film that has been very popular recently. A film, which is one of those that are always snubbed in the nominations, but you know well that it deserves it. In this case, I am going to talk about the film debut of Fernando Frías: "I'm no longer here". I warn you in advance that this review contains spoilers.

"Ya no estoy aquí" es una película de 2019, pero estrenada en 2020 mediante el servicio de streaming de Netflix. La película está dirigida por Fernando Frías de la Parra alguien bastante nuevo en el mundo del cine, con tan solo un filme y un documental en su haber, aparte de esta obra. Su éxito podría deberse al algoritmo de Netflix, independientemente de cuál sea el motivo, además de la calidad de la película, "Ya no estoy aquí" se ha ganado un estatus enorme en los últimos meses. Se ha vuelto una de las películas latinoamericanas más reconocidas y valoradas, ganó diez Premios Ariel, un premio prestigioso del cine mexicano y ha ganado premios en festivales internacionales. Fue nominada a la próxima entrega de los Premios Goya en el apartado de "Mejor película iberoamericana".
"I'm No Longer Here" is a 2019 film, but released in 2020 through the Netflix streaming service. The film is directed by Fernando Frías de la Parra someone fairly new in the world of cinema, with only one film and one documentary to his credit, apart from this work. Its success could be due to Netflix's algorithm, regardless of what the reason is, besides the quality of the film, "I'm no longer here" has gained a huge status in the last few months. It has become one of the most recognized and valued Latin American films, won ten Ariel Awards, a prestigious Mexican film award and has won awards at international festivals. It was nominated for the next Goya Awards in the "Best Ibero-American Film" category.
La historia | The story
La trama gira en torno a Ulises, interpretado por Juan Daniel García Triveño aka Derek. Ulises es miembro de una pandilla llamada "Terkos", perteneciente a la cultura de los Kolombias. Los kolombias fueron parte de un movimiento cultural pandillero en México, centrado en Monterrey, caracterizados por su apariencia de "cholo" y por ser amantes de la cumbia rebajada y hacer eventos en torno a este género musical. Ulises y su pandilla caminan por los barrios de Monterrey, matando el rato, haciendo travesuras, bailando cumbias rebajadas y esparciendo la vibra de los Terkos. Esta historia se ambienta en un momento de tensión social y política en México, la guerra contra el narcotráfico, por lo que las vidas de los Terkos están marcadas por el peligro y la violencia.
The plot revolves around Ulises, played by Juan Daniel García Triveño aka Derek. Ulises is a member of a gang called "Terkos", belonging to the Kolombias culture. The Kolombias were part of a cultural gang movement in Mexico, centered in Monterrey, characterized by their "cholo" appearance and for being lovers of "cumbia rebajada" and doing events around this musical genre. Ulises and his gang walk around the slums of Monterrey, killing time, getting into mischief, dancing to cumbias and spreading the Terkos vibe. This story is set in a time of social and political tension in Mexico, the war against drug trafficking, so the lives of the Terkos are marked by danger and violence.
Ulises vive bajo la tensión entre las guerras de pandillas contra las autoridades, en medio de este vértice de violencia, Ulises se ve involucrado por error en un suceso violento que lo obliga a sacar a su familia del barrio y a él de irse a Estados Unidos. Estando allá, intenta buscarse la vida junto con las personas con las que se fue. Eventualmente, generará conflictos con estas personas y quedará solo en un país desconocido, sin saber hablar inglés. Estando allí, conoce a una chica llamada Lin, en un establecimiento para el que hace un trabajo de albañilería. Con ella, formará un vínculo bastante singular y poco común, marcado por la barrera del idioma, ella no habla español y él no habla inglés. La trama nos cuenta por medio de fragmentos el pasado de Ulises mientras él se busca la vida y se relaciona con Lin.
Ulises lives under the tension between gang wars against the authorities, in the midst of this vortex of violence, Ulises is involved by mistake in a violent event that forces him to take his family out of the neighborhood and him to go to the United States. While there, he tries to make a living with the people he left with. Eventually, he will generate conflicts with these people and will be left alone in an unknown country, not knowing how to speak English. While there, he meets a girl named Lin, in an establishment for which he does masonry work. With her, he will form a rather unique and unusual bond, marked by the language barrier, she does not speak Spanish and he does not speak English. The plot tells us through fragments of Ulises' past as he makes a life for himself and interacts with Lin.
La ejecución | The execution
"Ya no estoy aquí" tiene un estilo cinematográfico y musical bastante sobrio y crudo. La fotografía, los encuadres, la iluminación y estilo general visual de la película, no tiene un sello que lo diferencie especialmente de muchas otras obras del estilo. Sin embargo, sí posee una particularidad que a mi parecer es bastante grata, dicha particularidad es la frecuencia de las tomas quietas. "Ya no estoy aquí" es una película cuyo montaje se siente increíblemente sutil, gracias al constante uso de planos generales quietos que se prolongan y generan no solo una sensación de realismo, si no también dan la impresión de estar más cerca de lo que sucede dentro de la película. En general, hay muchas mas y encuadres en los que podrían interpretarse simbolismos, a la par que un uso genial de los cortes de escena que se funden entre sí. Todo esto mientras una banda sonora bien posicionada y siempre plausible para la trama, suena junto con las cavilaciones de Ulises. Impregnadas de las percusiones lentas y las voces graves de la cumbia rebajada, la vida de Ulises, sucia y urbana, respira por las noches.
"I'm no longer here" has a rather sober and raw cinematographic and musical style. The photography, framing, lighting and general visual style of the film, does not have a stamp that differentiates it especially from many other works of the style. However, it does have a particularity that I think is quite pleasing, that particularity is the frequency of still shots. "I'm No Longer Here" is a film whose editing feels incredibly subtle, thanks to the constant use of still general shots that are prolonged and generate not only a sense of realism, but also give the impression of being closer to what is happening inside the film. In general, there are many more and framings in which symbolism could be interpreted, as well as a great use of scene cuts that blend into each other. All this while a soundtrack well positioned and always plausible to the plot, sounds along with the musings of Ulises. Impregnated with the slow percussions and the low vocals of the downgraded cumbia, Ulises' life, dirty and urban, breathes at night.

"Ya no estoy aquí" ha sido una revelación para mí. Tengo tantas cosas para decir sobre esta película que se acumulan y me termino tapando, sin saber qué decir realmente. Pero creo que puedo sintetizar mis sentimientos dando imágenes dispersas. Es increíble como el vínculo entre Lin y Ulises existe de esa forma tan cálida y juguetona, sin entenderse entre ellos y usando los silencios para estar más cerca. Hay algo en esa relación, en esa química de personajes. Hay algo también en la forma en la que Ulises baila, dando vueltas, saltando sobre sus talones, mientras los demás vitorean y tocan la percusión usando botes de plástico. La increíble sutileza con la que toda la situación sociopolítica es presentada, sin en ningún momento ser demasiado obvio. La forma en la que la película lleva su ritmo tranquilo y de repente hay un tiroteo sin ninguna clase de aviso de parte de la música, de la cinematografía ni de nada. "Ya no estoy aquí", a pesar de hablar de violencia, a pesar de hablar de tiempos turbios y de una vida turbia, se trata a sí misma de una forma que transcurre suave como la seda y sucio como los peores rincones de los barrios de Monterrey. No sé si sé explicar bien por qué esta película me gusta o si son solo desvaríos, lo que sí sé, es que la imagen de Ulises bailando al compás de cumbias rebajadas son algo que ya está guardado de por vida en mi mente y me servirá no solo como ejemplo de lo grande y mágico que puede llegar a ser el cine, si no como objeto de inspiración también. "I'm No Longer Here" has been a revelation for me. I have so many things to say about this film that they pile up and I end up plugging away, not knowing what to really say. But I think I can synthesize my feelings by giving scattered images. It's amazing how the bond between Lin and Ulises exists in such a warm and playful way, not understanding each other and using the silences to be closer. There is something in that relationship, in that character chemistry. There is also something in the way Ulises dances, spinning around, jumping on his heels, while the others cheer and play percussion using plastic drums. The incredible subtlety with which the whole socio-political situation is presented, without at any time being too obvious. The way the film carries its calm pace and suddenly there is a gunfight without any kind of warning from the music, the cinematography or anything else. "I'm No Longer Here", despite talking about violence, despite talking about troubled times and a troubled life, treats itself in a way that runs smooth as silk and dirty as the worst corners of Monterrey's slums. I don't know if I know how to explain why I like this film or if it's just non-sense, what I do know is that the image of Ulises dancing to the beat of cumbias is something that is already stored for life in my mind and will serve me not only as an example of how great and magical cinema can be, but also as an object of inspiration.
