I'm always skeptical of movie adaptations of popular books, especially ones I've read because creators often cut important scenes or make changes that contradict the spirit of the original story. Usually, it's the readers that end up disappointed. The book version of Project Hail Mary has received positive ratings on Goodreads and although it's been sitting on my TBR for a while, seeing the trailer made me nervous. Fortunately, those doubts disappeared once I watched the movie.
Project Hail Mary(2026) is an American sci-fi directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller based on Drew Goddard's screenplay of the popular novel of the same name by Andy Weir. It stars Ryan Gosling as the lead actor, Sandra Hüller, James Ortiz, Lionel Boyce and other supporting actors.
The opening scene shows Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) waking up from a deep sleep with medical wires attached to his body and tube in his mouth. A robotic voice announces that he's awake. He pulls out the tube, coughs and rolls off the bed. He can't remember who he is, why or how he's in the spacecraft. Then he discovers the bodies of his two dead astronauts and in confusion goes through their luggages.
While playing around with the buttons of the craft, his memories start to return bit by bit. In flashbacks, he was recruited by Eva Stratt (Sandra Hüller) because of an infection draining the sun and causing the celestial body to die. If not stopped, Earth would cease to exist. Since he's the only living person in space who can help, he pilots the spacecraft further into space until he comes across another craft. There's an alien in it who is on a similar mission to save his world. Can they work together to save their worlds?
My Review And Rating
Not many cinephiles are drawn to sci-fi movies because their plots are science-driven and packed with technical terms and concepts that are sometimes difficult to understand and follow. But Project Hail Mary is a movie that adds humor, friendship and heart to science fiction adventure. The plot is brilliant and fascinating, fixated on the idea of planets working together in harmony to make life better.
I think the adaptation of Andy Weir's book was well done even though I have not read it yet. I'm not surprised if some parts of the book were trimmed out in the movie yet it doesn't negatively impact it. I expected viewers would be bogged down with many science details or terms but it wasn't so. The storytelling is seamless and the problem—the infection and decline of the sun—is easily understood by any adult who watches it.
The only flaw I see is the slow pacing at the beginning where it's just Ryan Gosling alone in the spacecraft either speaking to himself or roaming around without doing much. I almost got bored until the extraterrestrial being came into the movie. Also, the ending was unnecessarily stretched.
The cast's performance is outstanding, especially Ryan Gosling. He's charismatic as an A-list actor and uses that charm to endear the audience. He brings humor into every dialogue and shows a kind of vulnerability in his relationship with Rocky that is touching. Every expression and word portrays a kind of emotional honesty that feels real and you want to love him for it. As the only living astronaut in space with no hope of returning home, he played his role perfectly.
His bromance connection with Rocky is what gives this movie a heart. We are focused on the science but quickly remember that beyond all the infection hassle are two beings looking to connect and save their worlds. I love how the directors slowly build the relationship between the two. Their interactions, curiosity and discoveries aren't rushed and feel real.
The cinematography is beautifully done. The visuals and transitions are stunning. The move between the present and the flashbacks are smooth except for the scene where Rocky tries to save Grace. The red, blinking flashes are a little uncomfortable to watch.
Rating this movie, I'd give it 7.5 stars out of 10. It's a fine adaptation that commits to the themes of hope in the midst of despair, friendship and connection to save the world. It's worth watching and I'd recommend it to all sci-fi fans.
