'My dear readers.' I didn't expect that the prequel spin-off series from The Bridgerton series would be better than I expected. I thought it would be a disappointment but I was actually impressed and I think it is the best out of the two series that has been produced, in my opinion. This was an amazing addition to the Bridgerton series and for the fact that it was based on the real Queen Charlotte who was married to George III, it made it insightful because it led me to read up on some historical events.
Without wasting time let's get to the review. 'Queen Charlotte : A Bridgerton story (2023)' was created by Shonda Rhimes and distributed by Netflix. This series is a historical drama that was set in the late 18th century which is adapted from the true history story of King George III and Queen Charlotte. It is a fictional adaptation whereby the audience are introduced into a fictional world to experience the lives of Charlotte and King George III. It is not a historical lesson.
The story of this prequel spin-off revolves around how Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz came to become the queen of Great Britain. It starred India Amarteifio, Adjoa Andoh, Michelle Fairley, Ruth Gemmell, Corey Mylchreest, Golda Rosheuvel, Arsema Thomas, Sam Clemmett, Freddie Dennis, Hugh Sachs and Julie Andrews as the voice of Lady Whistledown.
The show began with an episode that explains how Charlotte was betrothed against her will by her brother Adolphus IV, Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. As Charlotte was present to George's mother, Princess Augusta, she was badly scrutinized. Disappointed, Adolphus encouraged Charlotte to not fail because the future of her people depends on her marriage to the king. Within a few hours, the royal wedding was prepared and Charlotte, having cold feet, decided she was going to run away and go over the wall since she had no idea of the man she was about to get married to.
During her attempt to go over the garden wall, she encountered a young man who later introduced himself as king George. So after meeting the King, Charlotte decided to go ahead with the wedding. After the wedding ceremony, George took Charlotte to Buckingham house telling her that she will be staying there alone while he goes back to his own estate in Kew. The discussion didn't go well in the end. Charlotte lived in Buckingham house alone and lonely during her honeymoon days. Frustrated, she summoned one of her ladies in court, Lady Agatha Danbury, who later became her confidante and adviser.
On a fateful night, Charlotte couldn't bear her frustration any longer, so went to George's estate without announcing her coming to find out what he has been up to in his estate. Charlotte discovered George prefers the company of the star and heavens to her since he hasn't made any attempt to consummate their marriage. Disappointed, Charlotte went back to her estate. Will George close the distance between them?
Characters.
The Cast of this prequel spin-off is excepcional. Their performances were acute and excellent. I will be talking about a few characters that caught my attention.
India Amarteifio and Golda Rosheuvel as young and old Queen Charlotte
Right from the first season of Bridgerton I have loved Golda as queen Charlotte. Her performance was amazing, her mannerism always gave me a good laugh. For India as the young queen Charlotte, I find her performance fantastic. She acted her role well though there was a big difference between her and Golda. Let's not talk of the difference in their physiques. With the gap differences, India still did excellently well by showing us the young and vibrant queen Charlotte. Both of them did well but for me, I would pick Golda any day and anytime.
Corey Mylchreest as Young King George III
Corey was amazing with his performance. He did an excellent job of reconciling the want to be normal with the desire to be worthy of Charlotte. He connected with his role well and he was able to portray the mad King. He gave us a glimpse of the erratic behaviors of the King then. Though back then I believe it would have been worse than it was portrayed in the show but Corey handled his role well. I enjoyed seeing him in each episode, his charm when he is himself, his erratic episodes were very relatable. I think Shonda did an amazing job selecting a handsome George, I must admit.
Arsema Thomas as young Agatha, Lady Danbury
Arsema, I am actually proud of her performance given the fact that when she auditioned for her role, the producing team were not aware that she was not British until the role was awarded to her. That's talent. She was able to convince the team that the role belongs to her. Her performance in this show is good, courageous, and strong. Her role conveyed that women can stand on their own. She stole the spotlight, in my opinion.
All other supporting characters were fantastic, especially the young Brimsley, Lord Danbury, princess Augusta and the rest.
My Review And Rating.
Rating this spin-off, I will give it 4.5 out of 5 stars. I enjoyed watching it. It was interesting, fun, entertaining and full of emotional scenes that evoked different emotions from me while watching. If I were to recommend the show, I would recommend it to historical film lovers. If you are not into historical films, you might not enjoy it.
The plot of this show was well written, rich in quality and the pacing of the plot didn't give room for boredom. The storyline was exciting because the audience were all curious to know how Queen Charlotte became the queen of Great Britain and how she stayed married to the mad king. I call the story of this show a rare love story. Also, the script and dialogues were well written. The script is engaging and intriguing which synchronizes well with the storyline.
The director did a fantastic job with this show. The scene arrangements were excellently arranged. The storytelling technique was fantastic. The setting was perfect because we got to see the past and the present in a story. The visuals and cinematography was good. The music also was splendid. The costumes used for the cast and the film set were beautiful and well selected.
Some scenes in this show caught my attention. The ending was emotional for me because I didn't know when tears began to drip to my cheeks. The ending was deserving, well acted. It was a good and heartfelt resolution. Also, in episode one when Lord Danbury was first introduced to us, it was shocking Hahah. That scene startled me because it was unexpected.
Overall, watching this spin-off was a fantastic experience for me. I love it and enjoyed it. If you haven't watched this show yet, hurry now and watch it. 'Sorrows, Sorrows, Prayers!'😅.
