It's funny how life can be good to some people and bad to others. It's not stable, rather it's dynamic. Sometimes life pushes us to the extend that we cross some lines of no return and break rules we shouldn't have. “Once you cross that line, there’s no going back.”. I heard this quote a lot while growing up.
Good Girls TV series was recommended to me by a friend a few years back but I never had the time to get to it. However, last month I remembered this series was added to my watchlist and I hadn't gotten around to it yet. I was reminded of this series because I lost the friend who recommended it to me. She was more than just a good friend to me. She was my movie critic buddy. I will miss talking about movies and TV series with her. So in memory of her, I binged the whole series and somehow, it felt like a conversation we never got to finish.
Good Girls TV series is a crime. Comedy drama that was created by Jenna Bans. It ran for four seasons on NBC, from 2018 to 2021. It starred Christina Hendricks as Elizabeth, Retta as Ruby, and Mae Whitman as Annie and the main characters, alongside with supporting characters that include Reno Wilson, Manny Montana, Lidya Jewett, Isaiah Stannard, and Matthew Lillard.
The storyline of this series revolves around three suburban Michigan mothers Elizabeth, Ruby, and Annie who respectively are experiencing one financial difficulty or the other in their lives regardless of the fact that they're all employed.
With no options of how to sort out their financial situations, they decided in unison to go rob a local supermarket where Annie works. With Annie being their inside man, this heist was successful except that, as humans we all make mistakes we can't be perfect. Thinking that their robbery was successful, they got noticed and identified by the supermarket’s store manager after Annie's lower back tattoo was accidentally exposed to him.
Also, their robbery activities got the attention of a gang leader named Rio who was using the same supermarket as a front to store and launder counterfeit money. Not long, their lives spiralled into more series of gang heists, debts, secrets, murder and family crisis. Will they survive till the end? Will they be quick enough to put their shits together?
My Review And Rating.
I love how the storyline of this series is intertwined and excellently written around strong and compelling themes. In the series, we were not introduced to hardened criminals, rather, regular mothers who are supposed to be incapable of committing any kind of crime.
Some of the themes depicted well in this series is the financial pressure women go through when they are the breadwinner of the family, desperation for survival, how important female empowerment is and its complications, morality, necessity, societal expectations of women to always be good, only men are expected and allowed to be bad. And lastly, the consequences of “one bad decision” and its ripple effect.
The three lead characters were fantastic with their performances. They all carried their roles equally. Their performance and mannerism were convincing and quite relatable. The chemistry seemed natural and compelling which made it easy for me to connect with each of them and their roles.
Cinematography was good which made it easy for me to follow the story of each character. I love how the humor was inserted in every scene from each character, even during dark situations that involved death, danger and conflicts. Also, this series was able to elicit some emotions from me especially some of the supporting characters that were annoying. However, sometimes the show finds it difficult to balance its comedic side with the crime side.
The series started well, but as I got to the rest of the seasons, it began to lose its quality. Although, the three lead characters kept the flow, pace of this series going.
Rating this series, I will give it 7.5 out 10 stars. It was entertaining, interesting and in some episodes, I was on the edge of my seat. It was a good experience for me and I think the series ended well.
This review is dedicated to my friend, my movie critic buddy, Felicia. I will miss our talks, our conversations and our banters. May your soul rest in peace. Till we meet again.
