I have had this TV series on my watchlist for a while. Last month, I decided to venture into the thrilling world of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan. After watching seasons one and two, I can say it's a fantastic experience. Even more, I understand there's going to be feature movie where the main characters from this series will reprise their roles. I can't wait to watch it.
Jack Ryan (2018 - 2023) is a political action thriller television series based on characters from the fictional Ryanverse by author Tom Clancy. Distributed by Amazon Prime Video, it's created by Carlton Cuse and Graham Roland and produced alongside Tom Clancy, John Krasinski, Michael Bay with others.
Season one centers around global terrorism and tracking by intelligence. We are introduced to Jack Ryan (John Krasinski), a former U.S. Marine officer and Afghanistan veteran, who after a devasting mission becomes a CIA financial analyst. He discovers a series of suspicious bank transfers linked to one Suleiman. Bringing the suspicious bank transactions to his superiors, they discover that the transactions are used to fund a rising extremist network operating directly for the Middle East and Europe.
Ryan is removed from his desk to the field to work together with his boss James Greer (Wendell Pierce). Together they are able to discover the big plan of Suleiman - a coordinated attack against the West.
Season 2 gets more intense as it focuses on political conspiracy and power struggles in Venezuela. Ryan is sent to Venezuela to investigate suspicious illegal arms shipments entering the country. This mission is a routine one but then he discovers a larger conspiracy that can destabilise the region involving President Nicolás Reyes.
Little did Ryan knew it's all a dangerous web of political manipulation, election interference, and other secret agendas. Working alongside his boss, Geer, who struggles with health issues, they go on covert missions, jungle operations, and face life threatening confrontations to bring Reyes down.
Characters That Pique My Attention
John Krasinski as Jack Ryan: Krasinski’s performance as the lead character, Jack Ryan, is impressive and unique. He portrays the character as it's written in the novels. At first, he's kind of aggravating but then I realise that the character from book is like that. Once he has his attention on something, he sees it through to the end. He is smart, cunny when he needs to be, resilient, brave and sometimes can be emotional unavailable.
Wendell Pierce as James Greer: I see Geer as a character who periodically delivers comic relief using dark humor in this series. His performance is convincing. I'm able to connect to him more than Ryan. I'm not happy seeing him have health issues in the second season. He's more like a mentor than a boss to Ryan. He is resourceful, religious, and one of my favorite character in this series.
Michael Kelly as Mike November: Kelly is an actor who frequently appears in crime, espionage and political thrillers. I always like to watch his films. As a CIA station chief and ally to Ryan and Greer, he brings strategic thinking, a little of comic relief, and presence that helps them navigate political situations well.
My Review And Rating.
I enjoyed watching the first two seasons of this series and already watching the last two seasons. The first season is an introduction into Jack Ryan's world. You would expect it to be slow paced but it's not. It starts off strong, every episode action-packed and thrilling, and it ends with a blast.
I like Ryan’s transitions from analyst to field agent. It's seamless. There's character growth and evolution along the way. Also, the bromance between Krasinski and Pierce is natural and convincing.
One flaw of the first season is the “familiar terrorism thriller” tropes depicted midseason. This makes the pacing slightly slow but things later pick up. The chase after the villain is well done and though he didn't get much screen time, he proves a worthy opponent for Ryan.
The second season is fast-paced and more action-packed than the first season. Ryan's character is developed to explore outside the box. He faces more power and political games, and manipulation, and how evil it can be.
One thing I love about this series is that the characters are well written and portrayed. The cast are simply perfect for their roles. The antagonists are given more depth and allowed to be ruthless with dangerous ambitions. The themes depicted include terrorism, radicalism, cost of war, growth and change, power, corruption, political manipulation, betrayal and loyalty. These are our reality and the acting makes them relatable and emotionally engaging.
Rating seasons one and two, I will give them 8 stars out 10. Jack Ryan is an action-packed and thrilling watch. There are unexpected twists, mystery, tension and suspense. I was on the edge of my seat all through.
