Hi Hive I am very happy to be back here, especially to this my favorite community on a special day like today June 28th Gay Pride day. Happy Pride to all! To celebrate this day I want to present you the review of a series which I found by mere coincidence while reading news on the internet, I could read that a Venezuelan actor had a leading role in the series. In addition to this, I learned that it was another production that Ryan Murphy made for Netflix, and it is no secret that this director has become a kind of creator of homosexual content on a large scale. Among his productions we have titles such as The Politician, American Horror Story and the award-winning Pose among many others.

After creating series inspired by real characters such as Gianni Versace, this time it is the turn of one of the most important fashion designers of the twentieth century. In fact, he is considered the first designer to become a celebrity in the United States. Fame came to him for free when he started designing hats that became famous thanks to the then first lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Little by little he formed an empire that would include a clothing line that dressed women from head to toe in a society where fashion was not exactly an obsession and Roy Halston Frowick, better known as Halston, was a precursor of fashion in his country.

His name was synonymous with an empire that encompassed suitcases, socks, dresses, hats and countless garments made under his name. The most remarkable case was the launching of the perfume with his brand, however there is much to tell in the life of this brilliant man who built himself, I won't tell you more and let's discover through these lines the life of Liza Minnelli's famous friend.

Para celebrar este día quiero presentarles la reseña de una serie la cual encontré por mera coincidencia mientras leía noticias en internet, pude leer que un actor venezolano tenía un papel protagónico dentro de la serie. Aunado a esto, me entere que era otra producción que Ryan Murphy hacía para Netflix, y para nadie es un secreto que este director se ha convertido en una especie de creador de contenido homosexual a gran escala. Entre sus producciones contamos con títulos como The Politician, American Horror Story y la galardonada Pose entre otras muchas.

Después de crear series inspiradas en personajes reales como Gianni Versace en esta oportunidad ha llegado el turno a uno de los diseñadores de moda más importantes del siglo XX. De hecho es considerado el primer diseñador en ser convertido en celebridad en Estados Unidos, la fama o le llego de gratis comenzó diseñando sombreros que adquirieron fama gracias a la entonces primera dama Jacqueline Kennedy. Poco a poco fue formando un imperio que incluiría una línea de ropa que vestía de pies a cabeza a las mujeres de una sociedad en la que la moda no era precisamente una obsesión y Roy Halston Frowick mejor conocido como Halston fue un precursor de la moda en su país.

Su nombre era sinónimo de un imperio que abarcaba maletas, calcetines, vestidos, sombreros y un sin número de prendas confeccionadas con su nombre. El caso más destacable fue el lanzamiento del perfume con su marca sin embargo hay mucho por contar en la vida de este brillante hombre que se construyó a sí mismo, no les adelanto más y descubramos a través de estas líneas la vida del famoso amigo de Liza Minnelli.

HALSTON is a miniseries of the streaming company Netflix premiered in May 2021 which was created by Sharr Whitte based on the book Simply Halston by Steven Gaines and produced by Ryan Murphy. In addition to Whitte, the series featured screenwriters Ian Brennan, a regular collaborator of producer Ryan Murphy, and Ted Malawe, with Daniel Minahan directing. The series has 5 episodes of around 45 minutes and stars Ewan McGregor, Rebecca Davan, David Pittu, Krysta Rodriguez, Bill Pullman, Rory Culkin, Sullivan Jones, Gianfranco Rodriguez and Maxim Swinton.

Además de Whitte la serie contó con los guionistas Ian Brennan un colaborador habitual del productor Ryan Murphy y a Ted Malawe, en compañía de la dirección de Daniel Minahan. In 1961, Roy Halston Frowick (Ewan McGregor), known simply as Halston, set the American fashion world ablaze when Jackie Kennedy wore one of his hats during the inauguration of her husband John F. Kennedy as President of the United States.

By 1968, women had stopped wearing hats even Jackie, and Bergdorff the man who sold her garments sought to reinvent Halston's designs. The designer, always confident in his abilities, struggles throughout his career with the ghosts of his past an abusive father and a mother victim of violence. In the beginning, Halston is seen using his verb with Ed Austin (Sullivan Jones), a handsome African-American man who ends up dating him after the two meet at a bar.

Halston plucks up the courage and proposes to Bergdorff a clothing line and a Halston store inside his store, but the clothing line he designs is a big flop. Thinking that no store would let him show off his creativity, he decides to go into business for himself. He starts by getting a team, starting with his friend and illustrator, Joe Eula (David Pittu). Joe introduces him to his muse and best friend, the legendary Liza Minnelli (Krysta Rodriguez), who is struggling to carve her own path and step out of the shadow of her mother, another LGTBIQ+ icon, the unforgettable Judy Garland. Other members of his team include his other muse, model and jewelry designer Elsa Peretti (Rebecca Dayan) and a young designer named Joel Schumacher (Rory Culkin). The designer manages to get funding thanks to one of his former clients at Bergdorff. Schumacher is the one who shows Halston a dyed fabric that inspires him to use the style for his entire campaign. After showing socialite Babe Paley (Regina Schneider) his new dresses, he gets his first big sale.

En 1961, Roy Halston Frowick (Ewan McGregor), conocido simplemente como Halston, hizo arder el mundo de la moda americana cuando Jackie Kennedy lució uno de sus sombreros durante la toma de posesión de su marido John F. Kennedy como presidente de Estados Unidos.

En 1968, las mujeres habían dejado de usar sombreros incluso Jackie, y Bergdorff el hombre que vendía sus prendas buscaba reinventar los diseños de Halston. El diseñador, siempre confiado en sus habilidades, lucha durante toda su carrera con los fantasmas de su pasado un papa maltratador y una madre víctima de la violencia. Al principio se ve como Halston usa su verbo con Ed Austin (Sullivan Jones), un guapo hombre afroamericano que acaba saliendo con el después de que ambos coincidieran en un bar.

Halston se arma de valor y propone a Bergdorff una línea de ropa y una tienda Halston dentro de su tienda, pero la línea de ropa que diseña es un gran fracaso. Pensando que ninguna tienda lo dejaría lucir su creatividad, decide emprender su propio negocio. Comienza por conseguirse a un equipo, empezando por su amigo e ilustrador, Joe Eula (David Pittu). Joe le presenta a quien sería su musa y mejor amiga la leyenda Liza Minnelli (Krysta Rodríguez), quien lucha por labrar su propio camino y salir de la sombra de su madre, otro icono LGTBIQ+ la inolvidable Judy Garland. Otros miembros de su equipo son su otra musa, la modelo y diseñadora de joyas Elsa Peretti (Rebecca Dayan) y un joven diseñador llamado Joel Schumacher (Rory Culkin). El diseñador logra conseguir financiación gracias a una de sus antiguas clientas en Bergdorff. Schumacher es quien le muestra una tela teñida a Halston que lo inspira a utilizar el dicho estilo para toda su campaña. Luego Tras mostrar a la socialité Babe Paley (Regina Schneider) sus nuevos vestidos, consigue su primera gran venta.

Story

The escalation to success is incredible in a short time he manages to appear in a fashion show in France thanks to many celebrities including Gene Tierney or Elizabeth Taylor begin to use his designs. Halston gets out of control and sells his main possession: his name to a man who offers him 7 million dollars for it and ends up betraying him.

Although his main executioner would sadly be the love of his life Víctor Hugo (Gianfranco Rodríguez), a handsome Venezuelan who will turn the designer into a cocaine addict. Just at that point Halston's career begins to spiral out of control, participating regularly in parties at Studio 54, a famous New York club. As the series progresses the confident and arrogant designer we meet at the beginning becomes quiet as he awaits a grim fate when he is diagnosed as HIV positive.

La escalada al éxito es increíble en poco tiempo logra presentarse en un desfile de moda en Francia gracias a que muchas celebridades incluidas Gene Tierney o Elizabeth Taylor comienzan a utilizar sus diseños. Halston se descontrola vende su principal posesión: su nombre a un hombre que le ofrece 7 millones de dólares por él y que lo termina traicionando.

Aunque su principal verdugo tristemente seria el amor de su vida Víctor Hugo (Gianfranco Rodríguez) un guapísimo venezolano que volverá al diseñador adicto a la cocaína. Justo en ese punto la carrera de Halston comienza a descontrolarse, participando regularmente en las fiestas del Studio 54 un famoso club de Nueva York. Mientras la serie avanza el diseñador confiado y arrogante que conocemos al principio se va tornando tranquilo esperando un destino nefasto al ser diagnosticado como VIH positivo.

Characters

𝕸𝖞 𝕺𝖕𝖎𝖓𝖎𝖔𝖓

Halston is based entirely on the biography Simply Halston by Steven Gaines and despite complaints from the designer's family members about the inaccuracy of the facts told in the series, the story focuses more on the general facts of Halston's life than the little details that make all the difference. Perhaps that is the biggest problem I have with the series the producers wanted to cover a 20 year period in just under 5 episodes, it would have been interesting to have a 10 episode series that focused on better told details.

But there are also a lot of details that in my opinion made Halston very slow at the beginning. There is a lot of space and the producers don't know what to do with it. For example, when in the first chapter Eula takes the designer to see Liza Minnelli, we see the actress perform her song "Liza With a Z" almost completely. What is certain is that Krysta Rodriguez's performance is great from minute 1, managing to capture the essence of the movie and cabaret legend.

And then there is the brilliant character that Ewan McGregor managed to make which at least for me made a great effort to channel the voice of Halston, although it was criticized and described as an attempt to imitate the designer, also takes credit for holding the entire series on his shoulders. His is the only character that has any depth and the one we get to know best. For me no character had the same weight that McGregor's character had, I enjoyed him very much.

𝕸𝖎 𝕺𝖕𝖎𝖓𝖎ó𝖓

Halston se basa completamente en la biografía Simplemente Halston de Steven Gaines y a pesar de las quejas de los familiares de diseñador sobre la poca precisión de los hechos narrados en la serie, la historia se centra más en los hechos generales de la vida de Halston que en los pequeños detalles esos que hacen la diferencia. Quizás ese sea el mayor problema que tengo con la serie los productores quisieron abarcar un periodo de 20 años en poco menos de 5 capítulos, hubiera sido interesante tener una serie de 10 capítulos que se centrara en detalles mejor contados.

Pero también hay muchos detalles que a mi parecer hicieron a Halston muy lenta al principio. Hay mucho espacio y los productores no saben qué hacer con él. Por ejemplo, cuando en el primer capítulo Eula lleva al diseñador a ver a Liza Minnelli, vemos a la actriz interpretar su canción "Liza With a Z" casi completamente. Lo que si es cierto es que la actuación de Krysta Rodriguez es genial desde el minuto 1, logrando capturar la esencia de la leyenda del cine y el cabaret.

Y Luego está el personaje brillante que logro hacer Ewan McGregor el cual al menos para mí hizo un gran esfuerzo por canalizar la voz de Halston, aunque fue criticado y descrito como un intento de imitar al diseñador, también se lleva el crédito por sostener toda la serie sobre sus hombros. El suyo es el único personaje que tiene alguna profundidad y al que mejor logramos conocer. Para mi ningún personaje tuvo el mismo peso que tuvo el personaje de McGregor, lo disfrute mucho.

Scenes

Another one who shines is the Venezuelan actor Gianfranco Rodriguez in the character of Victor Hugo, his interpretation is excellent and he manages to be hated as the great villain of the miniseries. Although there are details that are not very redeemable as the occasion in which at a dinner Victor serves him some arepas, a typical dish of my country, although they did not even have filling, as they are usually eaten in Venezuela.

And although perhaps with the passing of the years the younger generations know little or nothing about these characters, it is always good to put ourselves in context. All the characters involved in this story were real from the exquisite Elsa Peretti to the incredible Joel Schumacher who after working with Halston became a prominent film director. But most of all it was great to enjoy again the great Liza Minnelli, now a legend, and to know that Halston designed every outfit the actress wore for 20 years, including that iconic yellow suit that would eventually win her the Oscar.

However if I had to decide who of all was my favorite character I would say it was Joe Eula played by David Pittu, at the end when Halston has fought with everyone he manages to gratefully approach to tell a good joke and laugh at the painful reality that has accompanied them. And that for me is the point where the story manages to capture your emotions with realistic scenes that I think were just literary license by the author but in my opinion served a lot to connect. The scene in the limo was brilliant, well done and exceptional.

In the end HALSTON decides to spend his last days traveling on the highways of the Pacific Coast of the United States, dying in 1990 from cancer, the result of AIDS. For me Ewan McGregor deserves all the awards that could be given to him, his performance is brilliant and manages to capture the essence of the true protagonist of the story, a brilliant homosexual and designer of his rise and fall Roy Halston Frowick. For me it's a 9.6/10 and should certainly be among the best series of the year.

Otro que logra brillar es el actor venezolano Gianfranco Rodríguez en el personaje de Victor Hugo su interpretación es excelente y logra ser odiado como el gran villano de la miniserie. Aunque hay detalles poco rescatables como la ocasión en la cual en una cena Víctor le sirve unas arepas un plato típico de mi país aunque ni siquiera tenían relleno, como se suelen comer en Venezuela.

Y aunque quizás con el paso de los años las generaciones más jóvenes sepamos poco o nada de estos personajes siempre es bueno ponernos en contexto. Todos los personajes involucrados en esta historia fueron reales desde la exquisita Elsa Peretti hasta el increíble Joel Schumacher que después de trabajar con Halston se convirtió en un director prominente de cine. Pero sobretodo fue genial volver a disfrutar de la gran Liza Minnelli ya convertida hoy en día en una leyenda y conocer detalles como que Halston diseño cada traje de que lucio la actriz a lo largo de 20 años, incluyendo aquel icónico traje amarillo con el que finalmente ganaría el Óscar.

Sin embargo si tuviera que decidir quién de todos fue mi personaje favorito diría que fue Joe Eula interpretado por David Pittu, al final cuando Halston se ha peleado con todo el mundo él logra acercarse agradecido para contar un buen chiste y reírse de la dolorosa realidad que les ha acompaña. Y ese para mi es el punto donde la historia logra capturar tus emociones con escenas realistas que pienso solo fueron licencia literaria del autor pero a mi parecer sirvieron mucho para conectar. La escena en la limusina fue brillante, bien lograda y excepcional.

Al final HALSTON decide pasar sus últimos días viajando en las autopistas de la costa del pacifico de Estados Unidos muriendo en 1990 a causa de un cáncer, producto del SIDA. Para mi Ewan McGregor merece todos los premios que le pudieran otorgar, su interpretación es brillante y logra capturar la esencia del que es el verdadero protagonista de la historia un homosexual brillante y diseñador de su ascenso y caída Roy Halston Frowick. Para mí es un 9.6/10 y sin duda debería estar entre las mejores series del año.
