From all the cultural events that have the human being as the axis of the creative objective, without a doubt, the most lasting, significant, artistic and above all transcendental, is music. During the 20th century, we were able to go from moving at the speed of our feet to reaching the surface of the moon for the first time. We were able to split the atom and create energy from that action, and also a talented black Christian woman in the 1940's created a rhythmic sound that had Blues and Soul as predecessors; thus rock and roll was born in its most primal state. She, Rosetta Thorne, is hardly remembered today, but more than 70 years later, all those who made rock are honoured in this documentary, made by the BBC and VH1 in 2007.
De todos los sucesos culturales que tienen al ser humano como eje del objetivo creativo, sin lugar a dudas, el más duradero, significativo, artístico y sobre todo trascendental; es la música. Durante el siglo XX, pudimos pasar de trasladarnos a la velocidad que daban nuestros pies, a alcanzar la superficie de la Luna por primera vez. Pudimos separar el átomo y crear energía a partir de esa acción, y también una mujer cristiana, negra, y talentosa en la década del 40's, creaba un sonido rítmico que tenía como antecesores al Blues y al Soul; naciendo así el rock and roll en su estado más primigenio. Ella, Rosetta Thorne, casi no es recordada hoy, pero más de 70 años después, todos aquellos quienes hicieron rock, son homenajeados en este documental, hecho por la BBC y VH1 en 2007.
You see, from my perspective, no other musical genre has penetrated as deeply as rock and roll has for decades. We can all see this, no doubt, when we look at the career of the greatest exponents of this musical style and above all at how it has survived the inexorable passing of the years within different generations. This curious fact explains why young people (like me, some time ago) feel a sense of excitement and emotion when listening for the first time to bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Black Sabbath; also Iron Maiden, The Beatles or B. B. B King, all of them artistic performers long before my time.
In Seven Ages of Rock, we can witness the popular and most transcendent history of rock and roll in terms of bands, artists, cultural impact and above all, following the temporal and social line of all the eras where bands like The Rolling Stones or Arctic Monkeys have had to live, and therefore, represent. Thus, we can glimpse the influence (just to give a mere example) of black American blues on the generation of kids born in the years after the Second World War in the United Kingdom, which would end up being fundamental in order to see how genres such as hard rock and heavy metal were born. In this way, AC DC and Judas Priest, to give just a small taste, are closely related to subjects such as Muddy Waters, Jeff Beck and Howlin' Wolf.
Verán, desde mi perspectiva, ningún otro género musical ha calado tan hondo como lo ha hecho el rock and roll durante décadas. Una cuestión, que sin dudas podemos ver todos, al apreciar el recorrido de los más grandes exponentes de este estilo musical y sobre todo en cómo ha sobrevivido el paso, inexorable, de los años dentro de distintas generaciones. Este hecho curioso, explica por qué jóvenes (como yo, hace algún tiempo) sienten desparpajo y emoción, al escuchar por primera vez bandas como Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Black Sabbath; también Iron Maiden, The Beatles o B. B King, siendo todos éstos intérpretes artísticos, muchísimo anteriores a mi tiempo.
En Seven Ages of Rock, podemos presenciar la historia popular y más trascendente del rock and roll en cuanto a bandas, artistas, impacto cultural y sobre todo, siguiendo la línea temporal y social de todas las épocas donde bandas como The Rolling Stones o Arctic Monkeys han tenido que vivir, y por tanto, representar. Así, podemos vislumbrar la influencia (por sólo dar un mero ejemplo) del blues americano negro hacia la generación de chicos nacidos en los años posteriores a la Segunda Guerra Mundial en el Reino Unido y que terminaría siendo fundamental para poder ver cómo nacían género como el hard rock y el heavy metal. The documentary, co-produced by the BBC and VH1 Classics, has a structure marked by decades. Starting with the comparative simile between Jimi Hendrix and Chuck Berry during the 50's and ending in the second decade of the new millennium, that is to say from 2010 with the rise of bands like Oasis, Kaiser Chiefs, Travis, or Franz Ferdinand. Whether you are a rock and roll lover or not, you will find this documentary series extremely educational, entertaining and with unique visual resources. Y es que el documental coproducido entre la BBC y VH1 Classics, tiene una estructura marcada por décadas. Iniciando por el símil comparativo entre Jimi Hendrix y Chuck Berry durante la década de los 50's y termina en la segunda década del nuevo milenio, es decir a partir del 2010 con el auge de bandas como Oasis, Kaiser Chiefs, Travis, o Franz Ferdinand. Tanto si eres amante del rock and roll, como si no, hallarás este seriado documental extremadamente educativo, entretenido y con recursos visuales únicos. Entrevistas con David Bowie, Kurt Cobain, comentarios de Roger Water e incluso, una nota exclusiva con Cliff Burton, bajista fundador, y lamentablemente fallecido, de Metallica.
Additionally, one would think that for a cultural and musical movement as powerful as rock music has been since its massification in the 50's, there would be a wide and glorious repertoire of audiovisual and cinematographic creations about its history, but it is not as nourished as it should be. A contradiction, which in my opinion, has taken its toll on the genre. The last great "wave of movements" on record is precisely the one that came after the fall from grace of bands like My Chemical Romance or Panic At The Disco (emo rock), and since that trend the documentary record and the spread of the genre's influence has been in a downward spiral. To the point where it doesn't even figure in the top lists of almost anywhere these days?
This is not to say that it is "dead", far from it, but it does reflect a clear negative pattern in terms of influence. We are far from seeing rock and roll as a protagonist at the big, massive festivals that exist today. Different, very different, from what happened at LIVE AID in 1985 when Queen, Genesis with Phil Collins and Paul McCartney gave perhaps one of the best live performances and audience response ever recorded (the famous version of Bohemian Rhapsody, by Freddie Mercury, comes precisely from that concert in London). All this only shows a reality that can no longer be mitigated or "hidden".
Además, cualquier pensaría de para un movimiento cultural y musical tan poderoso, como ha sido el rock, desde su masificación en los años 50's, habría un repertorio amplio y glorioso de creaciones audiovisuales y cinematográficas sobre su historia pero no es tan nutrido como debería. Una contradicción, que en mi opinión, le ha pasado cierta factura al género. La última gran "ola de movimientos" de la que se guarda constancia es precisamente la que vino después de la caída del efecto de bandas como My Chemical Romance o Panic At The Disco (emo rock), y desde esa tendencia el registro documental y la propagación de la influencia del género ha ido en franca picada. Al punto de ni siquiera figurar en las listas top de casi ningún lugar actualmente...
Esto no quiero decir que ha "muerto", ni mucho menos, pero sí refleja un claro patrón negativo en cuanto a la influencia. Lejos estamos hoy de ver al rock and roll como un protagonista en los grandes festivales masivos que existen en la actualidad. Distinto, muy distinto, a lo que sucedió en el LIVE AID de 1985 cuando Queen, Genesis con Phil Collins y Paul McCartney hicieron, quizá, una de las mejores presentaciones de la que se tenga memoria; en cuanto a performance en vivo y respuesta del público jamás grabadas (la famosa versión de Bohemian Rhapsody, por Freddie Mercury, viene precisamente de ese concierto en Londres). Todo esto sólo muestra una realidad que no se puede mitigar ni "ocultar" más.
However, if VH1 got one thing right in 2007, it was to create this series and broadcast it immediately. At that time, the whole Emo Rock movement was booming. Where the general trend was hypersensitivity, existentialist drama and, above all, melodies that mixed the sensitivity of poets with the aggressiveness of punk rock and hardcore. It was also the most propitious way to pay homage to the great exponents of music history, while they were still alive. Such as Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Rob Halford, Ringo Starr, David Bowie, Chuck Berry, James Hetfield, Eddie Vedder (the sole survivor along with Scott Weiland of the Grunge generation for the 2007 broadcast year) and Patti Smith, just to give a few examples.
No obstante, si en algo acertó VH1 en 2007, fue en crear este seriado y en emitirlo de inmediato. Pues, en esa época, estaba en auge toda la movida del Emo Rock. Donde la tendencia general era la hipersensibilidad, el drama existencialista y sobre todo, la melodías que mezclaran la sensibilidad propia de los poetas con la agresividad del punk rock y del hardcore. También, era la forma más propicia para homenajear a los grandes exponentes de la historia de la música, mientras aún estuvieran vivos. Tales como Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Rob Halford, Ringo Starr, David Bowie, Chuck Berry, James Hetfield, Eddie Vedder (el único sobreviviente junto a Scott Weiland de la generación del Grunge para el año de emisión de 2007) y Patti Smith, por sólo brindar unos escasos ejemplos.
So, I could end this post by summarising that in Seven Ages of Rock, we can learn from how the Beatles overcame censorship in the United States and won over fans in the Soviet Union itself, to how Sid, founding member of Pink Floyd and an acute schizophrenic patient, the foundations of psychedelic rock, without forgetting San Francisco, California, as the cradle of Trash Metal, and bands like Metallica, Slayer, Testament, to American hard rock, son of 80's glam where Guns And Roses and Motley Crew have a few stories and records to their respective names. To capture the cultural phenomena of rock and its direct influence on each one of us is what makes this documentary magical and remarkable. Do I recommend it? Totally.
Así que, podría terminar este post resumiendo, que en Seven Ages of Rock, podemos saber desde cómo hicieron los Beatles para vencer la censura en los Estados Unidos y ganarse a fanáticos en la mismísima Unión Soviética, hasta cómo Sid, miembro fundador de Pink Floyd y paciente esquizofrénico agudo, fundamentó las bases del rock psicodélico, sin olvidar a San Francisco, California, como cuna del Trash Metal, y de bandas como Metallica, Slayer, Testament, hasta el hard rock americano, hijo del glam de los 80's donde Guns And Roses y Motley Crew tienen unas cuantas historias y récords a sus respectivos nombres. Plasmar el fenómenos cultural del rock y su directa influencia en cada uno de nosotros es lo que mágico y destacable a este documental ¿Lo recomiendo? Totalmente.
