Euphoria is a story that, for the unprepared, might take you by surprise. And not exactly in the best way... But don't panic, I'm not trying to give the show a bad name. On the contrary, I, who grew up with the generation of "Skins", the famous Channel 4 series from the UK (and which is in its entirety and in excellent quality on Netflix) must admit, I was somewhat reluctant to watch this HBO production. But in the very first episode, the animosity vanished completely. And that's precisely what I'm here to do, to tell a story that is absolutely deeper than just teenage conflicts, and their typical dramatic reaction to the (circumstantial) events of life in that period.... Here there is more than just dismay and frustration: this is the beginning of a dark period.
Euphoria es una historia que para quienes no estén preparados, podría tomarlos de sorpresa. Y no precisamente en el mejor de los sentidos... Pero no se asusten, no intento crear mala fama al show. Al contrario, yo, que crecí con la generación de "Skins", la famosa serie de Channel 4 del Reino Unido (y que está entera y en excelente calidad en Netflix) debo admitir, que era algo reacio a ver esta producción de HBO. Pero en el mismísimo primer episodio, la animadversión se esfumó por completo. Y precisamente, éso es lo que vengo a hacer, a relatar una historia que es absolutamente más profunda que solo conflictos adolescentes, y su típica reacción dramática ante los eventos (circunstanciales) de la vida en ese período... Aquí hay más que solo desazón y frustración: así empieza una etapa oscura.
Co-produced by Zendaya herself, HBO and even Drake, Euphoria looks (mostly) at the life of a 16-year-old girl (Rue) who has gone off the rails in an incredible way. Not only because of her repeated use of hard drugs, but because of the relationship with death that she possesses. A question that is key to understanding the character's personality. And to be able to understand the actions she carries out with the people around her. In fact, if there is something that I personally liked a lot about this series, it is the figure of the narrator that she has in the series. It is clearly a cinematographic device, used a lot in the history of cinema, but it gives it a much more dynamic feel. Let's not forget that the series has micro-stories that are related to each other with the main character and it is key to understand the universe of people involved...
However, if there is one thing I must highlight, it is undoubtedly the relationship between pain, trauma and drugs in adolescence. At least from the American point of view, illicit substances seem like common currency. Recreational use is not so frowned upon or prohibited. However, the real problem comes when festive use gives way to the most gory and nauseating addiction. That is why Euphoria is powerful. It demystifies an entirely real problem within American society. Drugs start out as fun and entertaining, but at least in Rue's case, they end up destroying her entirely.
Coproducida por la mismísima Zendaya, HBO e incluso Drake, Euphoria repasa (principalmente) la vida de una chica de 16 años, (Rue) que ha descarriado su vida de un modo increíble. No solo por el consumo reiterado de drogas duras, sino por la relación con la muerte que ella posee. Una cuestión que es clave para entender la personalidad del personaje. Y para poder comprender las acciones que realiza con las personas que la rodean. De hecho, si hay algo que en lo personal me gustó y mucho de esta serie es la figura de narrador que ella tiene en la serie. Es claramente, un recurso cinematográfico, empleado muchísimo en la historia del cine pero le da un sentido muchísimo más dinámico. No olvidemos que la serie tiene micro historias que se relacionan entre sí con la protagonista y es clave entender bien el universo de personas involucradas...
Ahora bien, si hay algo que debo destacar, sin duda son las relaciones que hay entre el dolor, el trauma y las drogas en la adolescencia. Al menos, desde el punto de vista estadounidense, las sustancias ilícitas parecen moneda de cambio ordinaria. No es tan mal visto o prohibitivo su uso recreacional. Sin embargo, el problema real viene cuando el uso festivo da paso a la adicción más cruenta y nauseabunda. Por eso es que Euphoria es poderosa. Desmitifica un problema completamente real dentro de la sociedad americana. Las drogas inician como algo divertido y entretenido, pero al menos en el caso de Rue, terminan destrozándola enteramente.
Without going too deep, and without the intention of bringing unnecessary spoilers, I can guarantee you that the relationship the protagonist has with her mother, in many ways is the typical relationship that some of us might have (at some point, especially in the teenage years) with our own parents. Clearly, if you are impressionable, conservative or even square-minded, you should definitely not watch this series. And not because I seem to be judging you, in advance, no. But because you probably won't delve into the complex psychology of the series. While there is abuse, sex scenes, and a marked brazenness and cynicism with life itself, the signs of social hypocrisy, dominance, authoritarianism and emotional abuse are everywhere.
Sin profundizar demasiado,y sin la intención de traer spoilers innecesarios, les puedo garantizar que la relación que tiene la protagonista con su madre, en muchos aspectos es la típica relación que podríamos tener alguno de nosotros (en algún punto, especialmente en los años de la adolescencia) con nuestros propios padres. Evidentemente, si eres impresionable, conservador o ni hablar de mente cuadrada, definitivamente no deberías ver esta serie. Y no porque yo pareciera juzgarte a ti, por adelantado, no. Sino porque, probablemente, no indagarás en la psicología compleja de la serie. Si bien hay abusos, escenas de sexo, y un marcado descaro y cinismo con la vida misma, no menos cierto es que las muestras de hipocresía social, dominio, autoritarismo y abuso emocional están por todas partes.
In this sense, I think HBO has hit the nail on the head, and distanced itself from the typical Anglo-Saxon teen production where it is mostly directed at the superficial aspect of youth. Here, the presence of "why things happen" is key. Nothing happens by just happening. The very personalities of the figures who bring the characters to life are themselves fascinating stories. Approval, anger, promiscuity, cynicism, sexual repression, trauma, loneliness, and above all: incomprehension. If I had to define it in a few monosyllables, I would use the ones I have just used. When you see it (or if you have already seen it) I know you will leave your comments and we can have a rich debate.
Also, there's something I'm really appreciating about the series made by HBO. And although it doesn't represent an innovation in the strictest of senses, at least for whatever reason, I appreciate it; and that is the female protagonist in complicated stories. Because when you watch Euphoria, you will notice that it will not be a short series (in length or broadcast), on the contrary, it seems that the plan is to make it more and more complicated and take it to a point where things really become completely dark and sinister. Something I personally appreciate and admire. Also, Zendaya's lead role is key. This girl is phenomenal. She has a completely natural ability to embody this character. Weird, at least for me, because her career before seeing her in Euphoria was different.
En este sentido, considero que HBO ha dado en el clavo, y se ha distanciado de la típica producción para adolescentes anglosajones donde está mayoritariamente dirigida al aspecto superficial de la juventud. Aquí, la presencia del "por qué suceden las cosas" es la clave. Nada pasa por solo suceder. Las mismas personalidades de las figuras que hacen vida a los personajes son en sí misma historias fascinantes. Aprobación, ira, promiscuidad, cinismo, represión sexual, traumas, soledad, y sobre todo: incomprensión. Si tuviera que definirla con pocos monosílabos, emplearía los que acabo de usar. Cuando la vean (o si ya la han visto) sé que dejarán sus comentarios y podremos tener un nutrido debate.
Además, hay algo que estoy valorando mucho de las series hechas por HBO. Y aunque, tampoco representa una innovación en el más estricto de los sentidos, al menos por la razón que sea, lo aprecio; y es el protagonismo femenino a historias complicadas. Porque al ver Euphoria, notarás que no será una serie corta (de duración o emisión), al contrario, pareciera que el plan es complicarla cada vez más y llevarla a un punto donde las cosas realmente se vuelvan completamente oscuras y siniestras. Algo que, personalmente, aprecio y admiro. Además, el rol protagónico de Zendaya es clave. Esta chica es fenomenal. Tiene una habilidad para encarnar este personaje completamente natural. Raro, al menos para mí, porque su carrera antes de verla en Euphoria era distinta.
I haven't followed her filmography, but one thing I do know, dramatic roles come naturally to her. There are no awkward scenes or scenes that, when you watch her, you feel that forced dramatisation of the moments they are trying to capture. And I refer to an aspect that struck me in the series. And that is the moment when she (Zendaya), or Rue, has to deal with the consequences of withdrawal. What that girl does there, it's fascinating. Also, another side that I'll also highlight is the personality disorders that we see here.... Bipolarity, obsessive-compulsive disorder, narcissistic, borderline personality disorder and even identity disorder, in other words, wherever you look you'll find interesting psychological traces to discuss and delve into.
Yo no he seguido su filmografía, pero algo sí sé, los roles dramáticos se le dan natural. No hay escenas incómodas o que al verla, sientas esa forzada dramatización de los momentos que se intentan plasmar. Y yo me refiero a un aspecto que me impactó dentro de la serie. Y es el momento en que ella (Zendaya) o Rue, tiene que enfrentar las consecuencias del síndrome de abstinencia. Lo que esa chica hace ahí, es fascinante. Asimismo, otro lado que también destacaré son los trastornos de personalidad que aquí vemos... Tanto la bipolaridad, el trastorno obsesivo-compulsivo, narcisista, el límite de personalidad e incluso el de identidad, o sea, por donde lo observes encontrarás rastros psicológicos interesantes para debatir y profundizar.
Finally, Euphoria's message, I would say, is "Be careful what you think is good for you". And without a doubt, at least in the two seasons that have aired (so far) on HBO, and that I have seen, I have been glad (and very glad) that I was wrong about watching this series. I like its use of frustration. And I couldn't end this post without highlighting, especially in season 2. the amazing soundtrack it has. I haven't figured it out, I won't lie, but I'm almost convinced it has to be a nod to series like "The Breakfast Club" from the 80's.. Totally awesome and at the same time powerful. My subjective rating is high for this production and I hope it stays that way. And I think it will do quite well at the Emmys, too. Stay tuned.
Por último, el mensaje de Euphoria, yo diría que es "Cuidado con lo que crees que es bueno para ti". Y sin lugar a dudas, al menos en las dos temporadas que ha emitido (hasta ahora) la HBO, y que yo he visto, me ha gustado (y mucho) haberme equivocado con respecto a ver esta serie. Me gusta el uso de la frustración que tiene. Y no podría terminar este post sin destacar, especialmente en la 2da temporada. el increíble soundtrack que tiene. No lo he averiguado, no mentiré, pero estoy casi convencido que tiene que ser un guiño a las series como "The Breakfast Club" de los 80's.. Totalmente impresionante y al mismo tiempo poderoso. Mi valoración subjetiva es alta para con esta producción y espero siga así. Y creo que le irá bastante bien en los Emmy, además. Atentos estaremos.
