Pelo malo is a Venezuelan drama film written and directed by the very good Venezuelan writer Mariana Rondon, was released in 2014 and had help from our sister countries Argentina, Germany and Peru. It became known in the world cinema section at the Toronto International Film Festival 2013, winning the Golden Shell award in its sixteenth version.
Pelo malo tells the story of a young Venezuelan boy who lives in a really poor neighborhood in Caracas, called 23 de Enero. The main character named Junior (Samuel Lange Zambrano) is a 9 year old boy who has "bad hair", let me explain.... In Venezuela is a racist way of insulting people with frizzy and curly hair, also called curly hair, well this young Venezuelan boy has bad hair and his schoolmates bullied him for his frizzy hair, so much so that he doesn't want to continue studying and wants to straighten his hair with all the desire in the world.
Junior comes from a poor family and has no father, his father died, Junior's mother, Marta (Samantha Castillo) a widowed mother of 30 years who does not want her son to go down another path and wants to educate him in the best possible way, Junior's desire to straighten his hair makes his mother think that he is an effeminate child with "homosexual" tendencies. Junior's paternal grandmother proposes to his mother Marta to give her grandson to her because she wants to raise him and give him freedom, besides she also needs someone to take care of her in her old age. Junior's mother flatly refuses and begins the re-education of Junior who wants to live with his mother and wants her to accept him as he is.
Junior's friend is a neighbor in the neighborhood and they love and support each other, that makes his mother distrust him even more and think he is a homosexual from head to toe, when in Junior's innocence he doesn't understand why his mother is like that with him, which makes him suffer a lot... His mother says that he has to be playing with boys and doing 'male' things. Really macho thinking.
Marta is a single mother with her son Junior and her younger brother and unravels in being a vigilante which was fired, Marta a single mother with a dead husband has no time for games or dreams, no job and no money at all, Marta is desperate and her two pillars are the same ones that crush her, Having to raise her children alone has taken its toll on her, plus her military background and her experience as a security guard make her harsh with her beloved son Junior's requests, for example to straighten her hair with a flat iron. She is a sad and desperate character even with herself, she is cruel with her son Junior when she is loving with her younger son (Junior's brother) and even Junior has covered up some things for her, for example Marta has relations with a neighbor and Junior covers it up only because of her innocence and wanting to fit into her mother's parameters.
Junior has to deal with his mother's strong character, Junior is a boy with many dreams and aspirations he loves to dance, sing and his biggest dream is to have straight hair, as his is extremely curly and frizzy. His dream is to appear as a singer with a very iconic costume in his school picture. Although Junior is a man and his aspirations may be to wear a military suit and serve the state, no, he wants to fulfill his dreams and be free and be allowed to be free.
Marta is a warrior and implacable woman with herself and even with her son, just the thought that her son Junior could become a homosexual scares her and provokes even more rejection towards him and a kind of resentment... She has had to deal with many things and her life has been really hard, in a country where the public services don't work, the governmental aids don't work, and the country is sinking more and more into poverty, plus a grandmother willing to buy her grandson just because she needs a consolation for her deceased son, discrimination and danger everywhere, that's Venezuela...
The very good producer Mariana Rondon creates totally amazing movies, so much so that "Pelo Malo" may seem like just another family drama, but it is not. Pelo Malo goes much deeper into the depths of a country mired in the various confilcts of discrimination, homosexuality and conservatism in Venezuela. It cannot be said that Pelo Malo talks about the discovery of the homosexuality of the protagonist Junior since he is a very intelligent boy and he knows what he wants, his mother is the one who does not understand why her son wants to straighten his hair and that makes her fear that he could become a homosexual, she desperately seeks a father figure for her son, so she can correct him and turn him into a 'Man'. When Junior just doesn't want to continue with the bullying because of his hair type.
Pelo Malo has a very interesting drama and contextualizes some situations that happen in the day to day in the chaotic Venezuela, it is certainly a movie which will make us open our eyes and think about everything dramatized in it, recommended 100%.

Pelo malo es una película de drama venezolana escrita y dirigida por la muy buena escritora venezolana Mariana Rondon, fue estrenada en el año 2014 y tuvo ayuda de nuestros paìses hermanos Argentina, Alemania y Perù. Se diò a conocer en la sección de cine del mundo en el Toronto International Film Festival 2013. Posicionándose como ganadora de un premio conocido como Concha de Oro en su décimosexta versión.
Pelo malo narra la historia de un joven Venezolano el cual vive en un barrio realmente pobre en Caracas, llamado 23 de Enero. El protagonista llamado Junior (Samuel Lange Zambrano) es un niño de 9 años que tiene el "pelo malo", les explico... En venezuela es una forma racista de insultar a las personas con el cabello crespo y rizado, llamado tambièn en forma de rulos, bueno este joven venezolano tiene su pelo malo y sus compañeros de escuela le hacìan bullying por su cabello crespo, tanto asì que el no quiere seguir estudiando y quiere con todas las ganas del mundo alisarse el cabello.
Junior viene de una familia pobre y no tiene padre, su padre muriò, la madre de Junior, Marta (Samantha Castillo) una madre viuda de 30 años la cual no quiere que su hijo se desvìe por otro camino y lo quiere educar de la mejor forma posible, las tantas ganas de Junior por alisarse su cabello hace que su madre piense que es un niño afeminado y con tendencias a ser "homosexual", la abuela paterna de Junior le propone a su madre Marta que le entregue a su nieto porque ella quiere criarlo y darle libertad, ademàs de que tambièn necesita a alguien que la cuide en su vejez. La madre de Junior se niega rotundamente y comienza la reeducacion de Junior quien quiere vivir con su madre y desea que lo acepte tal cual como es.
Junior tiene de amiga a una vecina del barrio lo cuàl los dos se quieren mucho y se apoyan, eso hace que su madre desconfie aun más en el y piense que es un homosexual de pies a cabeza, cuándo en la inocencia de Junior el no entiende porque su madre es así con el, lo cuál lo hace sufrir bastante... Su madre dice que el tiene que estar jugando con niños y haciendo cosas de 'hombres'. Un pensamiento realmente machista.
Marta es una madre soltera con su hijo Junior y su hermano menor y se desenvuelve en ser una vigilante la cual fue despedida, Marta una madre soltera con un esposo muerto no tiene tiempo para juegos ni sueños, sin ningun trabajo y sin nada de dinero, Marta esta desesperada y sus dos pilares son los mismos que la aplastan, el tener que criar a sus hijos sola le ha afectado bastante, ademàs de que su manera de ser militarizada y de paso con experiencia de haber trabajado de vigilante la hacen ser dura con las peticiones de su querido hijo Junior, de por ejemplo alisarse el cabello con una plancha. Es un personaje triste y desesperado hasta consigo misma, ella es cruel con su hijo Junior cuando es amorosa con su hijo menor (hermano de junior) y hasta inclusive Junior le ha tapado algunas cosas como por ejemplo Marta mantiene relaciones con un vecino y Junior la tapa solo por su inocencia y el querer encajar en los parametros de su madre.
Junior tiene que lidiar con el caracter fuerte de su madre, Junior es un niño con muchos sueños y aspiraciones le encanta bailar, cantar y su mayor sueño es tener el pelo liso, ya que el suyo es sumamente rizado y crespo. Su sueño es aparecer como cantante con un traje muy icònico en la foto de la escuela. A pesar de que Junior sea hombre y sus aspiraciones tal vez sea vestir el traje militar y servirle al estado, no, el quiere cumplir sus sueños y ser libre y que le permitan serlo.
Marta es una mujer guerrera e implacable con ella misma y hasta con su hijo, nada màs el pensar de que su hijo Junior pueda llegar a ser homosexual la asusta y le provoca aùn màs rechazo hacia el y una especie de rencor... Ella ha tenido que lidiar con muchas cosas y su vida ha sido verdaderamente dura, en un paìs donde los servicios publicos no funcionan, las ayudas gubernamentales menos, y el pais se hunde cada vez mas y mas en la pobreza, ademas de una Abuela dispuesta a comprar a su nieto solo porque necesita un consuelo por su hijo fallecido, discriminacion y peligro por todos lados, asi es Venezuela...
La muy buena productora Mariana Rondon crea peliculas totalmente increibles, tanto así que "Pelo Malo" tal vez pueda parecer un drama familiar más, pero no es así. Pelo Malo va mucho más al fondo de las entrañas de un país hundido en los diferentes confilctos de la discriminación, homosexualidad y el conservadurismo en Venezuela. No puede decirse que pelo Malo hable sobre el descubrimiento de la homosexualidad de el protagonista Junior ya que es un niño muy inteligente y èl sabe lo que quiere, su madre es quien no comprende porque su hijo quiere alisarse el pelo y eso la hace temer a que pueda convertirse en homosexual, ella busca desesperadamente una figura paterna para su hijo, para que pueda corregirlo y convertirlo en un 'Hombre'. Cuando Junior solo no quiere que sigan con el bullying por su tipo de cabello.
Pelo Malo tiene un drama muy interesante y contextualiza algunas situaciones que pasan en el dìa a día en la caótica Venezuela, sin duda es una pelicula la cuál nos hará abrir los ojos y pensar en todo lo dramatizado en ella, recomendada 100%.
