Hello movie lovers! How are you all doing? ❤️
Since there are just 2 weeks left until everyone will celebrate more or less Halloween depending on where are you from, there is also a cool contest in the Movies & TV Shows Community that I've written about in my previous post. Anyway, since I didn't know if we are allowed or not to bring more entries in the contest, I thought that I'd write one more review but this time about a series that kept me close to the screen in the past week.
The series I'm talking about is called Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and it's amongst the main attractions of Netflix right now seeing the series featured somewhere on the screen, but I doubt this one can be watched by anyone because it's a pretty brutal story written after a real case. Hence why the 18+ tag.
Introduction
Even though the name and story of the real serial killer were kept, I think it's obvious that the main actor is not the actual murderer but someone who reproduces the disaster created by Jeffrey Dahmer.
The actor who plays the role of the criminal is Evan Peters and presents how for over 10 years Jeffrey Dahmer managed to escape from the police and got 17 teenagers as victims, that is both a crazy and scary number. But as everything has an explanation, the mini-series will share very well what actually happened and how this was possible.
I watched the series on Netflix and this one comes with a total of 10 episodes that have a length of around 50 minutes each but where at the beginning of each one of them you will get to see a warning sign that it says about the episode containing lots of explicit content, violence and more, that are not recommended to be watched by people younger than 18 years old.
Description
Even from the first episode of the series everything is quite explicit with one of the possible victims of Dahmer that actually represents the answer to the question "How everything ended for this guy?". Though, since you get the answer to the question almost right away, the big curiosity and controversy come when you think that there were 17 such victims and it took over 10 years to finally stop the massacre, which is what will make you keep watching the series to find more answers.
The first time when I heard of this case was in my youth when I was only around 14 years old and don't know how come I ended up on a webpage that was sharing details of Dahmer which back then made me very terrified but still not curious enough to search for more since I was still a kid.
Years passed and even though this is not the first series about the life of Jeffrey Dahmer, Netflix created a brand new series which brought over 700 millions of hours of watch time in just 3 weeks since it was released, making it become the #2 most watched English-language show of all time on Netflix.
Now if you ask me, I think it's a fairly good way to spread the news and make people be more aware of the people they socialize with but this can also come with a negative impact since not for a few times when something bad was becoming popular it was turning up into a trend or disaster. Anyway, I really hope the new generations and people in general get the right message from this series and don't turn it into another disaster the globe will deal with.
While there are quite a lot of things that can be considered as small pieces from a whole puzzle that led to this guy known as the Milwaukee Monster, the very first reasons can be taken into consideration with Dahmer's mom taking a lot of pills while she was pregnant with him and his father having weird activities like seeking for dead animals and analyzing their organs with Jeff next to him.
All these, along with many other ups and downs the boy had to go through both in high school and at work, turned him into a real monster and cannibal because he also used to consume parts of his victims' bodies.
Now, there are a lot of details and things to take into consideration which can be more or less important since in the end, we are still talking about a psycho who has no excuses for everything he did but the thing that scared the hell out of me was that we are talking about a man who never showed his insanity but actually lots of smiles and a sociable behaviour that very few would say no to.
But when you are one of those lone wolves who gets excited about a new person you meet and get to talk with about lots of common interests, it's hard to smell the danger but actually, turn into a victim in no time. And it's really hard to stay away from psychopaths because while those with crazy behaviour can be noticed from the distance, serial killers are such complex human beings that are hard to discover before it's too late.
While the very first victim seems more of an incident even though I doubt it really was one, the rest of the victims become more of a habit, especially that they are mostly met in the same location and follow the same process from getting to Dahmer's apartment where they are promised to get some money for playing the role of a model for a photo shoot but they get drugged and then lots of bad things happen.
Though, we are talking about 9 years since the first crime happened until the 2nd one came on line so most likely everything could be avoided if Dahmer would enjoy a better life in this whole period and give up on his weird passions which sooner or later will turn him into a gay criminal series but also cannibal who had the passion of consuming the heart and other parts of his victims' dead bodies.
Though, the fact that the man was interested in keeping the skulls and bones of his victims, as well as pictures of their dead bodies, made him his biggest enemy because they represented the best proof police could get to sentence him to 900 years in jail.
Honestly, no matter if he would spend 90 years or 900 years, I still think that it's a man that should get the death penalty, but we are talking about a city that didn't have this penalty anymore which is where a new story begins about how corrupted the USA is.
While there were countless phone calls made towards police regarding the smell coming out of the infamous murdered flat which was bothering all the neighbours that could feel it as well as hear screams and terror most of the time, there was also the case when the police got to see one of Dahmer's victims getting out of the flat completely naked and covered in blood but which refused to go any further and ask for details just because we were talking about black people.
I won't debate this subject too much because I don't want to reveal any spoilers and it's also a quite sensitive subject for Americans who didn't receive this series too well because there are still lots of corrupted things going on even in 2022, but what made me really pissed off is to find out that one of the cops who could stop this very early retired just 5 years ago. So he enjoyed a complete career without being punished in any way for his deeds!!!
Opinions and conclusions
I usually like to write separate sections of "Opinions" vs "Conclusions" where more or less I relate if the specific movie/series is worth being watched or not, but considering that we are talking about something created after a real case that is definitely not a fun thing to watch, I think it's more about danger awareness that we tend to forget about most of the time.
While the series comes with quite a few explicit and gross scenes to watch, I was happy to see that it doesn't present in lots of details how the victims died but actually dedicated a decent amount of watch time to the reasons that turned Jeffrey Dahmer into a serial killer, as well as the problems that still persist in the USA with lots of corrupted people and the neverending war between black and white people.
Though, being a quite powerful series that definitely has an impact on anyone watching it, I still consider that this shouldn't be watched by people younger than 18 years old, or at least not in the missing of one parent.
Have you seen "Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story"?
And if so, what are your overall thoughts on the things that happened back then?
