Hello, gods and goddesses of Olympus!

I discovered The Umbrella Academy thanks to one of my best friends and it turned out to be good medicine for a dark moment that week. It's entertaining and, although its premise may not seem like a big deal to many, I think its plot is quite interesting and incredibly emotionally charged.

On one day in 1989, all over the world, women who were not pregnant gave birth to 43 babies. Being the product of such a rare phenomenon guaranteed to have something special, more than enough reason for inventor Sir Reginald Hargreeves to adopt 7 of them. As they grew up, it became evident that they were different from the rest, as 6 of them began to manifest superpowers and that's when Sir Reginald Hargreeves raises them to teach them to use their special abilities to fight crime and become icons of humanity.

Sir Reginald Hargreeves was not exactly an ideal father figure (he named them numbers) and being children and teenagers exposed to fame for their superpowers inevitably created problems between them and eventually they slowly drifted apart.

When Sir Reginald dies, 5 of the children (no longer so much children, but rather adults) return to Umbrella Academy and, as we watch the episodes, we will realize that Sir Reginald's death was, in fact, a homicide. Add to this, one of the children who had disappeared years ago returns with the alarming news that the world will end in a matter of days.

As much as we expect epic crime-fighting battles in iconic costumes, that's the least we'll see in The Umbrella Academy. It shows us (and, in my experience, made me fascinated) the emotional conflicts that being child superheroes brought to the characters, how the difference between their powers brought them advantages or problems and, especially, how it would feel to be the only girl without powers in a household of child superheroes. Though that doesn't mean we won't have interesting and action-packed fights.

Although the story focuses on the 6 characters, the main protagonist is Vanya who, as I already mentioned, does not possess superpowers like the rest of her siblings and this caused her to be marginalized and invisible to the rest of her only family for years.

Let's take a tour, then, through each character's history and find out what makes them so interesting that we quickly crave for more seasons.

Number One (Luther) is the strongest member of the team and is also the leader, he was the only one who stayed at the academy and still fought missions under Sir Reginald's command, until he was injected with a serum that gave him strength, size and...the appearance of an ape, an aspect that has led him to have complexes and insecurities. He was sent on a mission into space alone and isolated soon after.

Number Two (Diego), with the ability to throw anything with great precision, since childhood he was already an expert in throwing knives and, when he left the academy, always being the most rebellious of all, he became a bloody vigilante. He has a relationship of hatred and fight with Luther because Luther is the number one and the leader, and Diego has always tasted the bitter taste of second place.

Number Three (Allison) took advantage of her power to manipulate minds with just the phrase ''I heard a rumor'' and is guaranteed a life as an actress and public figure. While she may seem the most perfect of the entire family, there is a back story that shows us otherwise and what gives her character depth. She and Luther possess a close relationship that we will enjoy throughout the season, as all the drama around it turns out to be chaos.

Number Four (Klaus) is the member who fell into misfortune the most, he became a drug addict because his power to talk to the dead is a burden he wishes he didn't have. He disguises his misery with his charming attitude and dark humor, resulting, in everyone's opinion, in one of the best characters of The Umbrella Academy. In the last episodes, we will discover more of his story and the origin of his traumas, making us sympathize with him and see him with new eyes full of love.

Number Five does not have a name like the others, since he disappeared before he could have one. His superpower to travel through time and space meant that, for most of the show, he was really a 50-year-old man in the body of a child. He suffered even worse isolation than Luther, as it is revealed to us that he was all this time trapped in a desolate post-apocalyptic world.

Number Seven (Vanya) is the only one of the siblings without superpowers and whose only real-life skill is being a violinist. As a way of expressing how outcast and resentful she felt, she published a book about all of her siblings' adventures and lives, which didn't exactly make them love her any more than they already did so little. The character can come across as tedious and dramatic at various times, but I think it's precisely because, if we were her, we would feel exactly the same way.

The Umbrella Academy explores a side of superheroes that we always wish we had seen and, in my opinion, is a series worth watching. It has 2 seasons with 10 episodes each, more than enough to grow fond of it and watch it again whenever we want to.

The Umbrella Academy has scenes of violence, torture, murder and, of course, lots of blood and explosions.

Descubrí The Umbrella Academy gracias a una de mis mejores amigas y resultó una buena medicina para un momento oscuro de aquella semana. Es entretenida y, aunque a muchos su premisa no le parezca nada del otro mundo, pienso que su trama es bastante interesante y con una carga emocional increíble.

En un día del año 1989, a lo largo de todos los lugares del mundo, mujeres que no estaban embarazadas dieron a luz a 43 bebes. Ser producto de un fenómeno tan raro garantiza tener algo especial, razón más que suficiente para que el inventor Sir Reginald Hargreeves adopte a 7 de ellos. Mientras crecían, se hizo evidente que eran diferentes al resto, pues 6 de ellos comenzaron a manifestar superpoderes y es ahí cuando Sir Reginald Hargreeves los cría para enseñarles a usar sus habilidades especiales para pelear contra el crimen y volverse iconos de la humanidad.

Sir Reginald Hargreeves no era exactamente una figura paterna ideal (les puso números como nombre) y el hecho de ser niños y adolescentes expuestos a la fama por sus superpoderes inevitablemente crearon problemas entre ellos y, finalmente, se fueron separando poco a poco.

Cuando muere Sir Reginald, 5 de los niños (ya no tan niños, sino más bien adultos) regresan a la Academia Umbrella y, a medida que vemos los episodios, nos daremos cuenta que la muerte de Sir Reginald fue, en realidad, un homicidio. Sumándole a esto, uno de los niños que había desaparecido hace años, vuelve con la alarmante noticia de que el mundo se acabará en cuestión de días.

Por más que esperemos batallas épicas contra el crimen en trajes icónicos, es lo menos que veremos en The Umbrella Academy. Nos muestra (y, en mi experiencia, hizo que me fascinara) los conflictos emocionales que ser niños superheroes les trajo a los personajes, cómo la diferencia entre sus poderes les trajo ventajas o problemas y, en especial, cómo se sentiría ser la única niña sin poderes en un hogar de niños superhéroes. Aunque eso no significa que no tendremos peleas interesantes y llenas de acción.

A pesar de que la historia se enfoca en los 6 personajes, la protagonista principal es Vanya que, como ya les mencioné, no posee superpoderes como el resto de sus hermanos y esto provocó que, por años, fuera marginada e invisible para el resto de su única familia.

Hagamos un recorrido, entonces, por la historia de cada personaje y descubrir qué los hace tan interesantes que ansiemos rápidamente por más temporadas.

Number One (Luther) es el miembro más fuerte del equipo y también es el líder, fue el único que se quedó en la academia y aun luchaba en misiones bajo el mando de Sir Reginald, hasta que fue inyectado con un suero que le proporcionó fuerza, tamaño y...la apariencia de un simio, un aspecto que lo ha llevado a tener complejos e inseguridades. Fue enviado a una misión en el espacio completamente solo y aislado poco después.

Number Two (Diego), con la habilidad de lanzar cualquier cosa con mucha precisión, desde niño ya era un experto en lanzar cuchillos y, al dejar la academia, siempre siendo el más rebelde de todos, se volvió un justiciero sangriento. Tiene una relación de odio y lucha con Luther porque este es el número uno y el líder, y Diego siempre ha saboreado el sabor amargo del segundo lugar.

Number Three (Allison) tomó ventaja de su poder de manipular la mente con solo la frase de ‘’escuché un rumor’’ y se garantiza una vida como actriz y figura pública. Aunque parezca la más perfecta de toda la familia, hay una historia detrás que nos muestra lo contrario y lo que le proporciona a su personaje profundidad. Ella y Luther poseen una relación cercana que iremos disfrutando a lo largo de la temporada, pues todo el drama alrededor resulta un caos.

Number Four (Klaus) es el miembro que más cayó en la desgracia, se volvió un drogadicto porque su poder de hablar con los muertos es una carga que quisiera no tener. Disfraza su miseria con su actitud encantadora y humor negro, resultando, en opinión de todos, en uno de los mejores personajes de The Umbrella Academy. En los últimos episodios, descubriremos más de su historia y el origen de sus traumas, logrando que nos compadezcamos de él y lo veamos con nuevos ojos llenos de amor.

Number Five no tiene un nombre como los demás, puesto que desapareció antes de poder tenerlo. Su superpoder de viajar a través del tiempo y del espacio ocasionó que, casi por toda la serie, realmente fuera un hombre de 50 años en el cuerpo de un niño. Sufrió un aislamiento incluso peor que Luther, pues se nos revela que estuvo todo este tiempo atrapado en un mundo post-apocalíptico desolado.

Number Seven (Vanya) es la única de los hermanos sin supoderes y cuya única habilidad en la vida real es ser violinista. Como una manera de expresar lo marginada y resentida que se sintió, publicó un libro sobre todas las aventuras y vidas de sus hermanos, lo que no hizo exactamente que la amaran más de lo poco que ya hacían. El personaje puede parecer tedioso y dramático en varias ocasiones, pero creo que precisamente es porque, si fuéramos ella, sentiríamos exactamente lo mismo.

The Umbrella Academy explora un lado de los superhéroes que siempre deseamos haber visto y, a mi me parecer, es una serie digna de ver. Posee 2 temporadas con 10 episodios cada una, más que suficiente para tomarle cariño y volver a verla siempre que queramos.

The Umbrella Academy posee escenas de violencia, tortura, asesinato y, por supuesto, mucha sangre y explosiones.
