Tonight, the winners will finally be revealed in various categories, intensifying the desire to witness the performances, series, and films that take home the coveted statuette.
A category that seems to have a sure winner is the Best Motion Picture – Non-English Language. The clamor among film critics ensures that this award is undoubtedly destined for "Society of the Snow." I watched it last night, and now I understand why Juan Antonio Bayona's film deserves such recognition.

La ceremonia de los Premios Globos de Oro nos empuja a la carrera. Con el anuncio de los nominados, surge el desmedido interés por ver a tiempo las producciones destacadas. Esta noche, finalmente, se revelarán los ganadores en distintas categorías, intensificando aún más el deseo de presenciar las actuaciones, series y películas que se lleven la anhelada estatuilla.
Una categoría que parece tener un ganador seguro es la de Mejor Película de Habla No Inglesa. El clamor entre los críticos del cine asegura que este premio está destinado, sin duda, a “La Sociedad de la Nieve”. Anoche la vi, y ahora entiendo por qué esta obra de Juan Antonio Bayona merece tal reconocimiento.
Based on the book "Society of the Snow" by Uruguayan writer Pablo Vierzi, the film tells a survival story so improbable due to adverse circumstances that, for some, it is essentially a miracle. Bayona has masterfully recreated this miracle by recounting the story of the survivors of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which crashed in October 1972 in the Valley of Tears.
With a harshness that aims for realism and a dramatic first-person narrative, Bayona manages to immerse the audience in a 72-day journey in the Andes Mountains. A flight that departed from Uruguay to Chile but never landed—crashed into the top of a mountain while crossing the border between Chile and Argentina, condemning its occupants to freeze and starve to death, lost at 4000 meters above sea level.

Basada en el libro “La Sociedad de la Nieve” del escritor uruguayo Pablo Vierzi, la película narra una historia de supervivencia tan improbable debido a las circunstancias adversas, que para algunos es esencialmente un milagro. Bayona ha recreado magistralmente este milagro al contar la historia de los sobrevivientes del vuelo 571 de la fuerza aérea uruguaya, que se estrelló en octubre de 1972 en el Valle de las Lágrimas.
Con una dureza que apunta al realismo y una narración dramática en primera persona, Bayona logra sumergir a la audiencia en una travesía de 72 días en las Cordilleras de Los Andes. Un vuelo que partió de Uruguay a Chile, pero que nunca aterrizó… se estrelló contra la cumbra de un montaña mientras cruzaba la frontera entre Chile y Argentina, condenando a sus ocupantes a morir congelados y de inanición, perdidos a 4000 metros de altura.
Amid adversity, resilience is born. In the initial minutes, the survivors demonstrate solidarity, kindness, and unity. In the following days, the human need to survive at all costs emerges. The survival instinct is activated naturally, despite society's beliefs, values, and taboos. The unthinkable becomes possible, and what was believed to be impossible becomes the only way to stay alive.
72 days, surrounded by snow, facing the harshness of nature, accumulating corpses in an improvised cemetery, hungry, with nothing to eat, and at one point, without hope. That anguish, uncertainty, sadness, and despair are constants masterfully conveyed by the film as if we were firsthand witnesses to what happened there. Bayona manages to immerse us in those emotions, making us part of the characters' suffering, their sacrifice, and their inexhaustible desire to live.

En medio de la adversidad, nace la resiliencia. Los primeros minutos los sobrevivientes demuestran solidaridad, bondad y unión. En los días siguientes, surge la necesidad humana de sobrevivir a toda costa. El instinto de supervivencia se activa de manera natural, a pesar de las creencias, valores y tabúes de la sociedad. Lo impensable se vuelve posible, y lo que se creía imposible se convierte en la única forma de seguir con vida.
72 días, tapiados de nieve, acechados por la inclemencia de la naturaleza, sumando cadáveres a un cementerio improvisado, con hambre, sin nada que comer y, en un momento, sin esperanza. Esa angustia, incertidumbre, tristeza y desesperación son constantes que magistralmente transmite la obra, como si fuéramos testigos presenciales de lo que allí ocurrió. Bayona logra sumergirnos en esas emociones, haciéndonos parte del sufrimiento de los personajes, de su sacrificio y de su inagotable deseo por vivir.

In addition to the plot and impeccable narrative, the film stands out for its technical quality in many aspects, with every detail so well-crafted that it has been selected to represent Spain as the "Best International Feature Film" at the Oscars 2024. It would be an injustice if it doesn't emerge as the winner tonight, although we know that anything can happen in the elitist film industry.
For me, it's a 10. It's a film that has no waste. A point in favor of Spanish cinema.

Además del argumento y la impecable narrativa, la película destaca por su calidad técnica en muchos aspectos, con cada detalle tan bien cuidado que la ha llevado a ser seleccionada para representar a España como “Mejor Película Internacional” en los Premios Oscar 2024. Sería una injusticia que esta noche no resultara ganadora, aunque sabemos que cualquier cosa puede suceder en la elitista industria del cine.
Para mí, es una obra de 10. Sin desperdicio. Punto a favor para el cine español.
